TIGI Professional
AN INTERVIEW WITH ANTHONY MASCOLO
Question fromMiranda Prudente
Anthony in all your years of hairdressing, how have you continued to produce such fresh and inspiring work and not run out of ideas?
Anthony
I’ve always believed in surrounding myself with young people. Young people have fresh ideas, but they can’t always take those ideas to the next stage. I can help them develop their work. I’ve always maintained when you teach others, you learn and improve your own work. It’s also about being part of a team and pooling everyone’s thoughts together.
Question from Marie Bon
French people really like TIGI. Why don't you imagine a wonderful show like TIGI world release in Paris to inspire all these traditional hairdressers?
Anthony
It would be great to do a show in France. This year the show is in London – but it’s not far! We hope that some French hairdressers can join us too.
Question from Erin Anne Loffler
Anthony, we met some years ago when I was a student at the Dallas Academy in Carrollton. I still have the book you signed for me! You are an artist! A legend! As such with all of the different collections and hundreds upon hundreds of cuts, what is your creative process in creating the next masterpiece?
Anthony
Brainstorming! My team and I research ideas that we like as individuals, then put them together, work out what hairdressers (and their clients) will find inspiring, try new ideas out and then finally develop new looks-and share them.
Question from Jennifer King
Anthony, your work is innovative and always on point before the trends. You’re fabulous, what/who encouraged you to get into photography? You have inspired me for years!
Anthony
My brother Bruno started doing photo shoots and took me along as his assistant. Then he tried photography and I had a go too. When I started working as a session hairdresser, I wanted to try to shoot my own pictures. Then my wife, Pat, bought me a camera-and that was it! Photography became my passion.
Question from Brian Benoit
Anthony, do you still use your Mamiya Pat gave you, that you’re holding in that photo?
Anthony
Of course I still have it. I never get rid of anything! But we shoot digitally now. I use a Hasselblad H4D.
Question from Ada Nane’
Anthony you are a globally respected hairdresser, an icon, yet you remain so humble and friendly. How have you managed that?
Anthony
I have a great family and a great team –they all keep me grounded! There’s no room or need for arrogance. I’m the same person I always was!
