“Stations of the Cross” is an annual public art project inviting people of all faiths or none. This journey is commemorated by the Stations of the Cross.

In this pilgrimage for art lovers, viewers travel across the District, from the United Methodist Building adjacent to the Supreme Court, to the National Cathedral reflecting on the day of crucifixion and how it relates to the struggles many are facing today. h resonates with current events for people of various faiths and backgrounds. Jesus' words upon the cross, "Why have you forsaken me?" speak acutely to the anguish and alienation felt by many today, from immigrants and refugees to religious, racial and ethnic minorities across our society. This unique exhibition—held in 14 locations across Washington, D.C. — uses works of art to tell the story of the Passion in a new way, for people of different faiths. Instead of easy answers, the Stations aim to provoke the passions: artistically, spiritually, and politically. The Stations weave through religious as well as secular spaces, from cathedrals to museums. The art on display runs the gamut from Old Master paintings to contemporary site-specific art installations.

Ook in het Nederlands Dagblad aandacht voor Stations of the Cross. Een lezenswaardige colomn van Gerard ter Horst met een indringend pleidooi om de 'Schreeuw' als extra kruiswegstatie op te nemen. Ik heb dit in statie 11 van deze moderne kunstpelgrimage verwerkt met het werk 'Dead Soldiers of Ukraine 2019' van Masha Trebukova. Gerard heeft het gehoord!

We kerken als gereformeerden in een voormalig katholiek kerkgebouw. In dit gebouw zijn de vroegere katholieke kruiswegstaties, alle veertien, blijven hangen. Ik zie ze bijna elke week. De betegelde kleine panelen hangen in het volle licht, een effect dat wordt versterkt door witte muren.

De weg van kwetsbaarheid en levenskracht verbeeld
hedendaagse kunstpelgrimage in Hengelo, Nederland.

De wandelroute ‘Stations of the Cross’ voert als een Via Dolorosa door de voormalige industriestad Hengelo, langs veertien kunstwerken die doen denken aan de kruiswegstaties over Jezus’ lijden en sterven. De wandeling is een kunstzinnige, contemplatieve pelgrimstocht. Elke stap en elk kunstwerk herinnert eraan hoe kwetsbaar de mens is. Oorlog, onrecht en eenzaamheid zijn van alle tijden. Maar altijd weer zullen er mensen zijn die zich inzetten voor vrede, gerechtigheid en naastenliefde. ‘Stations of the Cross’ volgt deze voetsporen van bezieling in Hengelo.

De internationale tentoonstelling ‘Stations of the Cross’ vindt in 2024 – na edities in Londen, Washington DC, New York, Amsterdam, Deventer en Toronto - in de industriestad Hengelo plaats. Veertien kunstenaars verbeelden het lijden van Jezus en van mensen in onze tijd. Deze kunstzinnige, contemplatieve tocht voert de bezoekers langs culturele, historische, maatschappelijke en religieuze organisaties in Hengelo.
