This blog describes the trials and tribulations of Frederieke Westerveld, a Dutch traditional sculptor who has recently (as of 2020) decided that bronze is the best material to cast my work in. Not that I know anything about said metal. Be prepared to see how a self-taught sculptor stumbles, falls, gets back up again and falls down the same trapdoor again! We all make mistakes, so lets put them on display loud and clear so you won't have to :D.

Look at this. I have a blog. There is a new post being added every other saturday at three o' clock (CEST). All I need now, is an audience.

Read all about it. Tell your friends, neighbors, your family dog! Anyone who has in interest in art and would like to read about the shenanigans of a sculptor at the earliest possible start of her career, trying to find her way.

It would mean the world to me :D.

A warm welcome to readers of this new blog about a relatively young sculptor's journey into the wondrous world of the arts.

Slowly building a library of pictures for a new website. And since I need to make these photos myself and they are mostly about me working, I sometimes feel like a true acrobat when planning and setting them up. (I still use a DSLR camera)

In this one, I used a remote control that I operated with my toe 🤣. But I like the end result.

Sometimes my patience is being tested. Like when I want to start working on a bronze casting of Sn**ch, and I'm still waiting for the angle grinder attachment for my Foredom (powerful multitool) six weeks after ordering it, because it's just been a string of communication mishaps after befuddlements.

Pro-tip: If your product is out-of-stock... please notify your customer and inform them of all their options. Don't wait until they contact you and leave them with a trail of bread-crumbs.

Wanted to introduce you to art foundry Atelier 80.

These talented people have been so kind to help me turn one of my sculptures into bronze, even though I'm pretty sure that at some point they've wanted to strangle Miss Octopus with her own arms. Saying this was a troublesome project is putting it mildly. But the end result is spectacular! I believe very few could've pulled this off.

So, what better way to appreciate this level of artistry than to get my grabby amateur hands all over it, while I'm finishing the piece and mucking it up as I go along?! This is going to be fun, fun, fun!

Aside from the fact that this artist REALLY knows how to draw, his points about inspiration (starts at 0:48) and waiting for the right time (starts at 5:40) are spot on. Point four and five on the other hand, I didn’t agree with. The entire video is still a B+, though ;).

The arts are sometimes being glorified when compared to other crafts like carpentry. Painters, sculptors, writers are talked about as if their abilities and talents have an almost supernatural origin.
When it comes to choosing careers, we have started to believe that everyone is able to become a prosthetist or a roboticist for example – well, except for me, but that is because I’m suffering from a serious illness called Mathmeticus Moronicus - but that one can only become a true artist if one has been born with ‘Creative Talent™’.
Apparently, there’s no training involved when you’re a sculptor or painter. You simply pop out of your mother’s womb with a paint brush or chisel in hand and you’re ready to create your masterpiece when the inevitable inspiration strikes.

Problem is: Inspiration is a fickle fairy and a turd, even the most inspired, is at best ordure. In the end our Fickle Fairy is a powerful entity that can help us get started, but she’s chaotic and won’t really help us finish projects. She also won’t help us get good at painting, writing or sculpting. For that you need practice and discipline. Two terms people rather ignore because they sound unsexy and involve hundreds of hours of tears, sweat, banging your head against the wall and calling yourself really hurtful things – like doodle or nincompoop – all in the name of artistic progression.

In the end, it turns out that the the demystifying truth is that the arts are just like any other job. There’s nothing supernatural about it. I hope I haven’t burst your bubble.

After two years of silence, I've been wanting to post some news.

First, I need to apologize: Two years is a long time to don't show any pictures, but I haven't really made anything new. Mostly this is due to health issues (I've been mostly ill for the past two years).

However, the post I've just written, with a new picture added of my octopus (this time in bronze), was just flagged by facebook, because I apparently am violating community guidelines that protects against human trafficking 😅.

I've always known. I'm a pimp.

I've been really, REALLY quiet. Mostly because I didn't have much to share. Health got in the way, so I've been twiddling my thumbs for months on end.

What I've been doing - mostly - wasn't creating new material, but looking for a foundry willing and able make bronze castings of my work. That turned out to be a lot harder than expected!
There are many foundries in the Netherlands, but not many are specialize in realism and to be honest: My sculptures are difficult to cast.
There are big changes in mass, going from bulky parts, like the body of the octopus to very thin, detailed ends like teeth, seperate fingers, the ends of those long octopus arms. This was already a problem when I was casting in resin, but when dealing with a hot substance like bronze, the heat differences between the thin and bulky parts can cause really big issues. And we haven't even talked about the mold yet :).

Long story short, I think I've talked to over a dozen foundries and visited three and tried to make a test cast with them of Twisted (a relatively 'simple' sculpt of mine). Those three foundries couldn't get a workable wax model casting of my original, which is what you need before you can do a bronze cast, so we had to part ways.

In the end, my journey let me to https://www.atelier80.nl/. And these guys are awesome! They were convinced that they would be able to make a nice casting of Sn**ch (the octopus), specifically because they had specialized equipment.
Immediately their wax castings were really well done. I had to polish them of course, but they were very clean, the detail was crisp. I felt comfortable working with them.

For the past two years (on and off, stupid health issues XD), we've been trying to get a good bronze cast of Sn**ch. It took a couple of tries, but like I said, these guys are pros and they didn't give up! (although, I'm quite sure they wanted to strangle me at some point... and that's okay, as long as I get a lovely end result 😂)

So, the picture below is what I'm working on now: My first bronze casting. And for some reason, Octopuses grow arms when they are bronzified. Scientific discovery of the year!
