I've been really, REALLY quiet. Mostly because I didn't have much to share. Health got in the way, so I've been twiddling my thumbs for months on end.
What I've been doing - mostly - wasn't creating new material, but looking for a foundry willing and able make bronze castings of my work. That turned out to be a lot harder than expected!
There are many foundries in the Netherlands, but not many are specialize in realism and to be honest: My sculptures are difficult to cast.
There are big changes in mass, going from bulky parts, like the body of the octopus to very thin, detailed ends like teeth, seperate fingers, the ends of those long octopus arms. This was already a problem when I was casting in resin, but when dealing with a hot substance like bronze, the heat differences between the thin and bulky parts can cause really big issues. And we haven't even talked about the mold yet :).
Long story short, I think I've talked to over a dozen foundries and visited three and tried to make a test cast with them of Twisted (a relatively 'simple' sculpt of mine). Those three foundries couldn't get a workable wax model casting of my original, which is what you need before you can do a bronze cast, so we had to part ways.
In the end, my journey let me to https://www.atelier80.nl/. And these guys are awesome! They were convinced that they would be able to make a nice casting of Sn**ch (the octopus), specifically because they had specialized equipment.
Immediately their wax castings were really well done. I had to polish them of course, but they were very clean, the detail was crisp. I felt comfortable working with them.
For the past two years (on and off, stupid health issues XD), we've been trying to get a good bronze cast of Sn**ch. It took a couple of tries, but like I said, these guys are pros and they didn't give up! (although, I'm quite sure they wanted to strangle me at some point... and that's okay, as long as I get a lovely end result 😂)
So, the picture below is what I'm working on now: My first bronze casting. And for some reason, Octopuses grow arms when they are bronzified. Scientific discovery of the year!
