AST BUT NOT LEAST: DANTE!

Dante has a very indecisive attitude when it comes to creating. He likes to put himself in a state of not-knowing which creates a surrender to the absurdity’s of existence. He’s curious how being indecisive works in the context of art. This provokes a long search for strange coincidences and new combinations.

Introducing our next graduate: Kleopatra!

Kleopatra Vorria is a Greek artist based in the Netherlands that treads on the boundary between spoken and bodily language. In her practice, she explores stories of womanhood and their inherent connection to power. Her world is one of captured moments, absolute and immemorial, dyed in a primordial red. She draws text from her own anecdotal experiences and of those around her, film and literature, her body. These stories then become scripts, which can then become spaces, videowork, sound installations, or performances.

Introducing our next graduate: Ida!

Ida Leijting (Doetinchem, 1998), departs her artistic ventures from the scary messy space of the in-between. Born into a family of caretakers and cleaners, she likes to trace the untidiness of that which does not settle, and even more so, that which does un-settle, the scary reality by which a grain of sand is always headed to an ongoing elsewhere, blown up against the eerie background of a vacant ruin. Here, she seeks to challenge the clearly demarcated borders of the un-death, the past-present and the un-clean. By means of sculptures, installations, and texts (often containing traces of the human body), she seeks to narrate sculptural tales of the in-between, material imaginations of borderlessness, clinical renderings of a long research-based unearthing of scientific facts and forensic archeology.

Introducing our next graduate: Victoria!

Through the appropriation of a well-known universal symbol: "the emoji", on first glance an inviting landscape is created where one can become part of a world where they can find joy, fulfilment, recognition and identification. However, there is more than meets the eye. This landscape filled with colorful pillows serves as a place where one can get comfortable to take in the four metre long short stories. Here, the instant gratification one gets from this world pulled out of the pop-culture system is put across full confrontation about loss of authenticity and connection, artificiality, alienation and dependance. The friction aimed to be created in this work is not to be confused with a critique on pop-culture/consumerism - it is the celebration of it in a recontexualized form in order to be able to acknowledge being "the freaky hoarder": in essence being the ritualist, conformist and rebel at the same time. It's a paradox of the human being as a part of the system without being a victim but owning this phenomenon and finding ones voice and power within it.

Introducing our next graduate: Sean!

An artist practice is more than just creating. Sean’s practice has always revolved around reading, writing, finding a way to bring art closer to day to day life. After seeing an interview with the owner of the Basie Jazz club in tokio, Shoji Sugaware, a shift had occurred to him. In the interview, Sugawara states that conservatorium students always approached him with highly academic questions about jazz. Yet he found that they never truly embodied what jazz is. They did not live the “jazz” way of life. Inspired by stoicism, where the theoretical discourse is truly abjected, Sean became interested in bridging this apparent schism. Sean was always interested in distilling highly complex webs of knowledge into accessible renderings of the same topics. Whether this was done through performance, film, writing, painting, sculture did not matter. Sean tries to make the person aware of the layer that one puts over one’s life. The endless fascination for the duality in seeing and being is one of the main motivators for Sean to keep on making. He aims to create not just a way of working, but more so a way of living. A way that truly embodies the “art” way of life. In this sense, anything can become a medium. Re-arranging household items on a tabletop, having a conversation, looking at people passing by, whistling a tune, getting up early or late in the morning, walking up and down a room. Nothing escapes the ability to become a medium. This fluidity of medium has been one of the main drive forces behind Sean’s practice. The question is always: how can I reframe the complexity of the theoretic dimension behind a distilled gesture? Through experimenting in ways of living and ways of creating, Sean has based a practice around this question.

Introducing our next graduate: Edie!

Why attempt and care for the creation of something that can never exist?
When pursuing the definition of safety within spaces, the task will quickly seem impossible. Trying to carefully receive and give new form to the information that has been given. Detecting desires that are so different while also identifying a bigger common ground than expected.
Merging these preferences to satisfy everyone and simultaneously disappoint all.
I am here and will stay here, within the impossible. Hoping you will allow me to welcome you.

Introducing our next graduate: Aydee!

"In my art practice I see that the world is on fire but can't put it out because I'm too short to be a fire fighter. This feeling of impotence makes me hang up party flags instead."

Aruba raised multimedia artist, Aydee Derix (Freiburg im Breisgau, 2000), playfully researches and explores the absurdities of existence/the world around her. In her practice she uses an irony as a coping mechanism, but also as a promise to herself. Derix shows an enchanting promise that she does not believe in yet, but in which she wants to believe. This promise to herself and the public can become a lied truth through repetition. Despite this irony, she wants to remain sincere, Derix does not want to use the promise and the spell as a cover. She consciously plays with various problems that concern her.

Derix tries to embrace the impossibility of improving the world. By emphasizing the uselessness of art, something interesting might happen. "Useful in its absolute uselessness." As Adorno would say.

Saving the world with bath ducks.

Introducing our next graduate: Elsa!

Elsa de Jong (Nijmegen, 1998) creates immersive installations that combine intensive theoretical research with her engagement in the digital realm. In her practices she's always searching for the tensions, similiarties and entangled factors between the multiple reality planes that exist among us. By using surrealist methods, she invites the audience to just again, for a few seconds, experience the world without gravity through the unbiased eyes of a child.

“Nostalgia, ghosts, gateways and pixels. Here the world is approached through the in-between, a disembodied space, right at the frontier of the actual and virtual. A space that forces you to break with the restraints of the physical, so you float. A world ruled by play.”

Introducing our next graduate: Yuchen!

Yuchen Li researches on the politics of food as an entry to
understand our relations with the world. Food holds the strong
connection to cultural identities, traditions, and ancestral
memories, and plays a key role in ecological, economic, political
transitions throughout history.
Through site-specific installations and performances, Li unpacks
the contemporary food rituals, reflecting critically on our role as
individual consumers. Li aims to interweave alternative ways of
relating to the world other than exploitation, appropriation or
consumption, by using art as a platform. Her work is not intended
as a statement but rather to raise questions into the collective
conversation.

Introducing our next graduate: Mike!

In the fierce competition between humans and nature, human beings constantly use their wisdom to
transform nature's original appearance subjectively. It can be said that this is a confrontation between spears
and shields, and this is a long-lasting tug of war full of drama, but also this is an era of the manufactured
landscape.

Introducing our next graduate: Jelle!

Making art is a bit like taking a train ride. You drag your inspirations, sources, and works behind the locomotive that is your artistic practice and storm towards your goals. However, you cannot always see what is around the corner, only a suggestion of what could be there. Slowly but surely, you puff forwards. Another cup of coffee, maybe another smoke, and the next station is in sight. You will never know what is awaiting you there until you arrive, but the spectacular mountain landscape will surely make for a wild ride full of possibilities.

Introducing our next graduate: Poeka!

Dear Destination, my blood runs from aching for you. Some days it seems like the roads between us are broken, maybe even shut down. They are not written in stone, they are like fog on a glass mirror. Inevitable that over time, maybe sooner than later, they will dissolve. The many shapes of landscapes that you are, as the wind touches your feet, all fade and break. In the tiny bits that I could have held you, you so easily return to your transparency. My Destination, the distance between us is immeasurable. Alone, unfortunate and desperate. I can’t put to words what it would mean to me to see you, to touch you with my bare hands as if the subtle appearance as hallow as you are, would melt around my fingers. How like the water, time would be frozen. Until then, we will meet in my dreams.

Introducing our next graduate: Ioanna!

Ioanna is a multimedia artist, currently working with performance and movement improvisation. Interested in the urban space, where the public and private exchange their duties and set their priorities; where most of us perform our routines and develop our habits. There is a lot she does not know about her own body, but what intrigues her is its accumulated experience being released through bodily movement along with the vast undiscovered potential of finding new space for new movement for new space for new movement for new space...

Introducing our next graduate: Bart!

My work consists of drawings, collages, paintings,
sculptures and performances. The
creative process is an important part of my work in
which craft, concept and research are
intertwined with each other. In my work life is central,
and from an autobiographical starting
point I try to translate my research on several seeming
contradictions in life into image.
The contradictions that fascinate me in daily life
– such as life and death, love and jealousy,
comedy and tragedy, sexuality and power, concealing
and showing everything – serve as
starting points for my work that approaches these
contradictions from an inquisitive attitude,
questioning if they are indeed contradictions. This
fascination can also be found in the use of
different techniques and contrasting materials, such
as wood, ceramics, plastics and textile,
as well as readymades, that I try to bring together
into a coherent whole. I am also seeking a
balance between craft and technical ability on the
one hand, and a flirt with amateurism on
the other. The role of the uneducated amateur, the
bungler, gives freedom and may even be
provocative in the intellectual ascending discourse
of contemporary art. At the same time,
technical ability can actually contribute to a certain
artistic quality, and I believe that a proper
balance between the two can make the audience look
and relate physically to the work.
My work often has humorous aspects, and with this
I mean a specific definition of humor that
alludes to the seeming joke behind which the deepest
seriousness is concealed. The humor
often serves as a coping device so that painful subjects
can be addressed, and at the same
time humor can provide perspective and hope, thus
providing a counterbalance to subjects
that are difficult to deal with.

Trotseren zonder masker (Defying without a mask)
This sculpture, with its cartoonish shoes and the weird displacement of the body for a pallet, for me,
resembles the clown. I am fascinated by the cliché of the tragedy behind the clown, the sad face
behind the mask. Therefore, in this work I tried to investigate both humor and tragedy, but also
balance and fragility, and concealment and revealing. After all, the heavy pallet is quite literally
balancing on the fragile ceramic shoes, and the funnel, symbolic for the fool, is concealed, yet
present.

Vlees is leed (Flesh is suffering)
The Dutch slogan 'Vlees is leed', which litteraly translated means 'Flesh is suffering', is used by
activists who are against factory farming, since they protest the suffering of animals. However,
'vlees' can either be translated as meat or as flesh, which makes quite a difference. This is exactly
what gives the title its ambiguity in Dutch: one could interpret it as suffering of our own flesh, as
pain, discomfort and desire. In both cases it questions our relation with nature.
