Nieuws: Sofia Patat is de nieuwe zakelijk leider van de Appel

De Raad van Toezicht van de Appel kondigt met trots aan dat Sofia Patat (Venetië, 1982) per januari 2023 is aangesteld als de nieuwe zakelijk leider van de Appel. Zij volgt Maaike Lauwaert op, die deze functie vervulde sinds 2016.

Patat was eerder werkzaam als Accountmanager Foundations bij het Stedelijk Museum, waar zij tevens lid was van de Ondernemingsraad. De afgelopen 15 jaar was ze werkzaam in de internationale beeldende kunstsector, onder andere bij de Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, waar zij verantwoordelijk was voor International Development and Partnerships, en eerder bij het Tropenmuseum en de Manifesta Foundation als Head of the Grants Department.

Sofia Patat: “Ik ben dankbaar aan de Raad van Toezicht van de Appel voor het vertrouwen gesteld in mij en kijk ernaar uit om samen met Lara Khaldi bij te kunnen dragen aan dit nieuwe hoofdstuk in de lange geschiedenis van de Appel."

🌙✨ De jaarlijkse Museumnacht komt eraan! Je bent van harte uitgenodigd bij de Appel voor een programma met, naast onze tentoonstellingen, een live-set van Disco Arabesquo en een karaoke-set gehost door het team van de Appel & het Curatorial Programme 🌙✨

Tijdens Museumnacht is de vierde episode van super feelings te zien, Sanctuary Sites van Kate Cooper. Zij presenteert een multi-channel videowerk, en nodigt ons uit af te dalen in het menselijke lichaam, en ons te verdiepen in de visualisatie ervan.

In de Livingroom van de Appel is het totaalwerk Domestic Optimism te zien van de kunstenaar Emma Wolf-Haugh, die in hen werk het patriarchale historische narratief van het modernisme problematiseert, en via nauwgezet onderzoek, een spel tussen feit en fictie, en een flinke dosis ironie een alternatief biedt.

Tijdens Museumnacht host de Appel bovendien het archief van Disco Arabesquo, een collectie van muziek uit de Arabisch-sprekende wereld in de jaren '70, '80 en '90, een tijd waarin de traditionele geluiden en instrumenten gecombineerd werden met westerse invloeden. DJ Arabesquo speelt een twee-uur durende live-set tijdens Museumnacht. 🌙✨

🎞 Filmvertoning met Serge Garcia: Grand Central Hotel & Cycle One (2021)🎞

Tijdens de derde en laatste interventie in de serie On the poverty of lived experience, ontwikkeld door Mohamad Dib staat de experimentele kunstpraktijk van filmmaker Serge Garcia centraal. Voor het eerst worden zijn korte films Grand Central Hotel en Cycle One (2021) in Nederland getoond. Voorafgaand aan de filmvertoning is er een introductie en Q&A met de filmmaker.

Serge Garcia is een filmmaker met een voorliefde voor doelloos dwalen. Gebruikmakend van niet-traditionele vertelvormen verkent hij de sociale, politieke en culturele historische contexten van ons heden. Serge heeft een oevre opgebouwd met muziekvideo's, documentaires, en narratieve fictie die internationaal op filmfestivals zijn vertoond.

🎞 Film screening with Serge Garcia: Grand Central Hotel & Cycle One (2021) 🎞

The third and last intervention in the series On the poverty of lived experience, developed by Mohamad Dib sheds light on the experimental practice of filmmaker Serge Garcia, hosting the first screening of his short films Grand Central Hotel (2021) and Cycle One (2021) in the Netherlands. The screening will be accompanied by an introduction and a Q&A with the filmmaker.

Serge Garcia is a filmmaker with a penchant for aimlessly wandering. Often engaging with non-traditional forms of narrative, his works deal with social, political, and cultural contexts of our historical present. Serge has developed a body of work through music videos, documentaries and narrative fiction that screened internationally at film festivals.

De herfst is aangebroken en episode 3 van super feelings spoelt aan in de Aula van De Appel. Op donderdag 13 oktober is de opening van into the earth below, the blue blur of bones van kunstenaar Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi.

Nguyen-Chi presenteert een nieuwe installatie voor haar film Into The Violet Belly (2022), onlangs gepresenteerd op de 12e editie van de Berlijn Biënnale. De film vertelt het verhaal van een vrouw die aan het einde van de Amerikaanse oorlog in Vietnam, naar Thailand en uiteindelijk naar Duitsland reist. Het gesprek tussen de co-regisseurs Nguyen-Chi en haar moeder Thuyen Hoa vormt een rode draad in deze film, waarin hun familiegeschiedenis, mythologieën en herinneringen worden blootgelegd en uitgediept.

✨E D U C A T I E ✨ Het lichaam als leraar ✨

De afgelopen periode is onze curator Educatie David Smeulders druk bezig geweest met de ontwikkeling van een nieuw project: 'Het lichaam als leraar', dat tot stand kwam in samenwerking met kunstenaars Cathalijne Smulders, Alexandra Loembe, Raoni Saleh, Stichting Kleintje Kunst, en de leraren van Kentalis Signis, een school voor jongeren met een communicatief meervoudige beperking (cmb).

'Het lichaam als leraar' is een serie kunst-en educatieprogramma's waarbij we de focus leggen op het lichaam, en wat we kunnen leren, zowel over onszelf als onze omgeving, door te luisteren, voelen en bewegen. Samen met de leerkrachten zijn we in de eerste fase, 'Leren met geluid, stilte en het intuïtieve lichaam' op zoek gegaan naar nieuwe vormen waarbij we experimenteren met stilte, geluid en zintuiglijke interacties op school en tijdens leerprocessen. Our curator Education David Smeulders has been working on a new project: 'The body as teacher', that has been developed together with artists Cathalijne Smulders, Alexandra Loembe, Raoni Saleh, Stichting Kleintje Kunst, and the teachers from Kentalis Signis, a school for students with a communicative multiple disability.

'The body as teacher' is a series of art-and education programmes that focusses on what we can learn about ourselves and the surroundings, by listening, feeling and moving. In the first phase, together with the teachers we searched for new frameworks in which to experiment with silence, sounds and sensory interactions at school and during other processes of learning. 🔥Binnenkort bij de Appel: Emma Wolf Haugh – Domestic Optimism 🔥

Vanaf donderdag 13 oktober is de nieuwe tentoonstelling Domestic Optimism van de Ierse kunstenaar en activist Emma Wolf Haugh te zien in de Livingroom van de Appel. Met sculpturen, prints, video en textiel creëert Wolf-Haugh een informele ruimte, van waaruit de patriarchale ontstaansgeschiedenissen van de modernistische architectuur opnieuw onder de loep genomen worden, en er een nieuw verhaal ontstaat.

Wolf-Haugh stelt een dekoloniale, q***r-workingclass lezing voor van architectuur, design en modernistische esthetiek, met het werk van de visionaire q***r architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976) als uitgangspunt.

Koloniale esthetiek, masculiene hysterie, seksuologie, de productie en verdoezeling van de lesbienne in de moderniteit en het uiteenvallen van naoorlogse sociale woonprojecten: het komt allemaal voorbij in Domestic Optimism.

From Thursday 13 October the new exhibition Domestic Optimism by the Irish artist and activist Emma Wolf-Haugh will be on view in the Livingroom of de Appel. With sculptures, prints, video and textile come together as an informal environ, creating the comfort from which to pick at the threats of the patriarchal tales of modernist architecture – by means of its own narrative.

Wolf-Haugh proposes a decolonial, q***r-workingclass reading of architecture, furniture and modernistic aesthetics, with the work and legacy of the visionary q***r architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976) as focal point of reference.

Colonial aesthetics, masculine hysteria, sexology, the production and the obfuscation of the le***an in modernity, and the collapse of post-war social housing projects all intersect in Domestic Optimism.

🌊🐚Het Curatorial Programme 2022 nodigt je uit voor: super feelings

super feelings ademt, beweegt, trilt en groeit. Het is een levende tentoonstelling met uitgestrekte tentakels die om zich heen tasten. In najaar 2022 wordt de Aula overgenomen door kunstenaars Jota Mombaça, Paola Siri Renard, Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi en Kate Cooper.

Negen maanden geleden ontmoetten de deelnemers van het Curatorial Programme elkaar voor het eerst. Melissa Appleton, Monika Georgieva, Ka-Tjun Hau en Chala Itai Westerman zochten naar een gedeeld bewustzijn, om samen te voelen en hardop te durven dromen.

De manifestatie van dit proces is super feelings, een vierdelige tentoonstelling waarin de kunstenaars het daglicht blauw kleuren, een duinlandschap van zand maken, fossielen opgraven, naar de bodem van de oceaan duiken en afdalen in het menselijk lichaam. 🌊🐚

super feelings breathes, moves, shivers, grows and expands. It is a living exhibition which stretches out its tentacles and feels around. Throughout Autumn 2022, Jota Mombaça, Paola Siri Renard, Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi and Kate Cooper will take over de Appel’s Aula.

Nine months ago the participants of this year’s Curatorial Programme met for the first time. Melissa Appleton, Monika Georgieva, Ka-Tjun Hau and Chala Itai Westerman searched for a state of shared consciousness that enabled them to sense collectively and dream wildly.

The manifestation of this process is super feelings, a four-part exhibition, in which the artists colour daylight blue, create a landscape of sand dunes, dig up fossils, dive to the bottom of the ocean and deep into the human body. 🌊🐚

🔜🎤 Binnenkort bij de Appel: 'On the poverty of lived experience', een serie performatieve interventies over de doorleefde ervaring in tijden van het kapitalisme 🔜🎤

In de huidige tijd van het kapitalisme zijn ervaringen vercommercialiseerd geraakt, en moeten constant gevaloriseerd worden, en verkocht, gekocht, verhandeld. Met andere woorden: onze persoonlijke affecties zijn geenszins een private zaak.

Maar hebben we niet altijd geleerd om het wel zo te zien? Zijn we niet juist geneigd om te geloven dat onze ervaringen onze eigen, persoonlijke eigendommen zijn, ervaringen die onze waarde (mede)bepalen op de kapitalistische concurrentiemarkt?

Kunstenaars worden (mogelijk) het meeste beïnvloedt door deze verplichting. In de serie 'On the poverty of lived experience' ontwikkeld door onderzoeker Mohamad Dib, schijnen we ons licht op de gedurfde, zelf-reflectieve en performatieve kunstpraktijken die erop gericht zijn om deze vragen te beantwoorden.

🔜🎤 Coming up at de Appel: 'On the poverty of lived experience', a series of performative interventions about lived experience in capitalist times 🔜🎤

In our capitalist time, experience is commodified, valorized, sold, bought, and marketed. In other words, one’s affective life is not one’s private business.

But haven’t we all learned to treat it as such? Aren’t we inclined to believe that our experiences are our personal properties, ones that determine our worth and value in the capitalist market?

Art workers are (possibly) the most affected by this imperative. The series 'On the poverty of lived experience', developed by researcher Mohamad Dib, sheds light on daring and self-reflective performative practices invested in working-through these questions.

On 24 August we start at 18:30 with the performative reading 'C***s had' by artist Stefa Govaart. Everyone is welcome to join us. Admission fee is 5 euros. For more information, see our website.

In onze (online) boekenwinkel verkopen we publicaties, en in ons Archief zijn (kunst)bronnen te raadplegen rond de thema’s slavernij, ongelijkheid, (de)kolonisatie en inclusie. Het Archief is geopend op woensdag en donderdag tussen 12-18u. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏻

🎨 Kunstschooldagen 2022 🎨

Op donderdag 16 en vrijdag 17 juni vonden de Kunstschooldagen plaats in Amsterdam, en ook de Appel deed mee! Tijdens de Kunstschooldagen zijn groepen scholieren onder leiding van David Smeulders en Phylicia Gilijamse aan de slag gegaan met verschillende kunstvormen, die de leerlingen hielpen om hun eigen verhaal op creatieve wijze te vertellen. Ze hebben allemaal hun eigen miniatuur tentoonstelling gemaakt, vanuit ideeën en objecten die voor hen belangrijk zijn. En het resultaat is prachtig geworden! 🎨

🎨 Kunstschooldagen 2022 🎨

On Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th of June de Kunstschooldagen took place in Amsterdam, and de Appel joined! Under the guidance of David Smeulders and Phylicia Gilijamse groups of students worked with different forms of art, that helped the students to tell their own story in a creative way. They all made their own miniature exhibition-space, integrating ideas and objects that are important to them. And the result is amazing! 🎨

🟣🔵 Sneak peek! Dit weekend zijn drie dansers aan de slag gegaan met de objecten uit de nieuwe tentoonstelling 'An Interior Motion' van Andrea Canepa, die zaterdag om 16:30 opent.

Ieder object in de ruimte functioneert als gedeelte van een partituur, die de interpretatie van de dansers richting geeft terwijl zij zich door de ruimte bewegen. Samen brengen zij de tentoonstelling tot leven en zullen haar hervormen. Ook het publiek wordt hier tijdens de tentoonstelling toe uitgenodigd.

Wanneer het spel een choreografie wordt, en de choreografie wordt een spel, dan kan er ruimte ontstaan om nieuwe relaties met de omgeving aan te gaan. In die tussenruimte dienen zich onverwachtse mogelijkheden en verhalen aan. Je bent van harte welkom om a.s. zaterdag om 17:00 uur naar de choreografie te komen kijken, om daarna zelf in interactie met de objecten, en met behulp van de aanduidingen van Canepa, je verbeelding te laten prikkelen. 🟣🔵

🟣🔵Sneak peek! Last weekend three dancers worked with the objects from the new exhibition 'An Interior Motion' by Andrea Canepa, that will open upcoming Saturday at 16:30.

Each piece in the Aula-space functions as part of a score that sets guidelines for three dancers to interpret while they move through the space. Together they will activate and reshape the show. The audience is invited to do the same during the exhibition.

When a game turns into choreography, and a choreography becomes a game, other relationships towards space may emerge, and, in that intermediate stage, unexpected possibilities and narratives may appear. You are very welcome to join us this Saturday at 5:00pm for the performance. After that you are invited to interact with the objects, and with the help of Canepa's score, allow your imagination to be enticed. 🟣🔵

🌊🐚Het Curatorial Programme 2022 nodigt je uit voor: super feelings super feelings ademt, beweegt, trilt en groeit. Het is een levende tentoonstelling met uitgestrekte tentakels die om zich heen tasten. In najaar 2022 wordt de Aula overgenomen door kunstenaars Jota Mombaça, Paola Siri Renard, Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi en Kate Cooper. Negen maanden geleden ontmoetten de deelnemers van het Curatorial Programme elkaar voor het eerst. Melissa Appleton, Monika Georgieva, Ka-Tjun Hau en Chala Itai Westerman zochten naar een gedeeld bewustzijn, om samen te voelen en hardop te durven dromen. De manifestatie van dit proces is super feelings, een vierdelige tentoonstelling waarin de kunstenaars het daglicht blauw kleuren, een duinlandschap van zand maken, fossielen opgraven, naar de bodem van de oceaan duiken en afdalen in het menselijk lichaam. 🌊🐚 🌊🐚de Appel Curatorial Programme 2022 invites you to: super feelings super feelings breathes, moves, shivers, grows and expands. It is a living exhibition which stretches out its tentacles and feels around. Throughout Autumn 2022, Jota Mombaça, Paola Siri Renard, Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi and Kate Cooper will take over de Appel’s Aula. Nine months ago the participants of this year’s Curatorial Programme met for the first time. Melissa Appleton, Monika Georgieva, Ka-Tjun Hau and Chala Itai Westerman searched for a state of shared consciousness that enabled them to sense collectively and dream wildly. 🏛️🎭🪁Op 2 juli opent de tentoonstelling 'An Interior Motion' van kunstenaar Andrea Canepa (Lima, 1976). Canepa neemt de Aula-ruimte als inspiratiebron voor haar onderzoek naar de organisatie van fysieke en sociale structuren die ons dagelijkse leven vormgeven. Ze laat zien dat hoewel de ruimtelijke en architecturale parameters van deze organisatiesystemen duidelijk gemarkeerd lijken, hun programma – hoe ze worden gebruikt – vaak onduidelijk is. Deze onduidelijkheid komt voort uit het gegeven dat de grenzen van bijna alle aspecten van menselijke interactie dubbelzinnig zijn. De dubbelzinnigheid komt tot uiting in de 1:1-schaal van haar sculpturen en de performatieve elementen van An Interior Motion. Door de architecturale verhalen van het monumentale interieur naast menselijke beweging te plaatsen, openen de sociale werkelijkheden van het verleden en heden van dit gebouw zich. Zo kan er ruimte ontstaan om de vele lagen van dit gebouw opnieuw te interpreteren. 🏛️🎭🪁 🏛️🎭🪁On 2 July the new exhibition 'An Interior Motion' by the artist Andrea Canepa (Lima, 1976) will be opened. Canepa has taken on the Aula space as the site for her investigation into the organization of the physical and social structures of our everyday lives. An investigation that seeks to reveal that while the spatial and architectural parameters of these systems of organization seem clearly marked, their programme – how they are used – is indistinct. An indistinction based on the notion that the boundaries of almost all aspects of human interaction are ambiguous. By means of the 1:1 scale of her sculptures alongside the performative feature of An Interior Motion, Canepa makes this ambiguity evident. By juxtaposing the architectural narratives of the monumental interior with human movement, the social realities of its past and present open up opportunities to reinterpret the space and its many meanings. 🏛️🎭🪁

Hoe doe je onderzoek zoals... Kafka's hond? We hebben nog een aantal plekken voor het seminar 'Lessen van Kafka's hond' met filosoof en schrijver Aaron Schuster. De grote inspiratie voor dit seminar is de filosofische hond van Franz Kafka, zoals geportretteerd in zijn roman Onderzoekingen van een hond (1922). Kafka’s verslag van een vervreemde, onderzoekende hond is een speculatief fictie-essay waarin hij de condities voor filosofie in relatie tot kennis, taal, gemeenschapsvorming en het leven blootlegt. In het seminar buigen we ons over de volgende vragen: kunnen de zonderlinge onderzoekingen van de hond inspireren tot een nieuwe manier van onderzoek doen? Is het mogelijk dat Kafka’s hond de onverwachtse held is van de praktijk van theorievorming, in tijden waarin wetenschappelijke theorieën het onderspit delven? Wat betekent het om te filosoferen samen met Kafka’s hond? The seminar takes its inspiration from Kafka’s philosopher dog, portrayed in his story Investigations of a Dog (1922). Kafka’s account of an alienated researcher dog is a speculative fiction-essay that lays out the conditions of philosophy in its relations to knowledge, language, community, and life. The seminar is guided by the following questions: can the dog’s eccentric investigations serve to inspire a new mode of research? What if Kafka’s dog were an unlikely hero of theory for untheoretical times? What would it mean to philosophize with Kafka’s dog? 📯📚De Appel presenteert: Catching Up in the Archive (7 april t/m 29 mei 2022). Voor de nieuwe tentoonstelling Catching Up in the Archive, in samenwerking met Mariana Lanari zijn meer dan 16.000 objecten van het Archief van de Appel naar de Aula gebracht, waar ze deel zullen worden van de interactieve online omgeving die speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling wordt gelanceerd. Catching Up in the Archive faciliteert een publiek programma met workshops, presentaties, verrassende ontmoetingen en een hoop verplaatsingen in de ruimte, zowel met speciale gasten als nieuwsgierige voorbijgangers. This is Lydia Ourahmane’s first solo exhibition in the Netherlands - so an extra honor for us at de Appel.* Upon entering the aula, you become immersed in a sonic composition, entitled ‘Notice the direction of fires’, the artist created with the musical duo Yawning Portal (Chicago/London). As she puts it: “The composition attempts a reading of the collective consciousness, by confronting its listener with a memory they may not even realise they have.” And there is more… Cannot wait share this unforgettable experience! Sunkiss revolves around the idea of 'slowness' in response to the acceleration of a once again rapidly forward moving world. In four sequences, Emirhakin, Negiste Yesside Johnson, Ratri Notusodirdjo and Mylan Hoezen perform actions that stimulate energy and blood circulation. The score by Bergur Anderson aims to create the experience of being close to the sun. Proximity, which can feel soothing and beneficial but also turn hazardous. The sound is based on a Shepard tone—a superimposition of sine waves with one-octave distance—creating a hazy, trance-like humming that helps both performers and audience to become further submerged in the moment.

Our Story

De Appel brings together people, objects and ideas to explore the yet unknown. With an experimental, open-minded and inclusive focus, the program of this Amsterdam based art organization serves the intellectually and emotionally curious, (non-)specialized art enthusiast. De Appel organizes exhibitions, performances, film screenings, lectures and gatherings that cross boundaries with regards to artistic and discursive disciplines. These programs are a means to facilitate artistically and socially relevant dialogues with various cultural and societal organizations, both in Amsterdam and beyond. The institution is home to a world-renowned curatorial programme and features a prominent archive and library. De Appel is constantly-in-the-making to remain critical towards rapidly changing societal and cultural contexts, both in the Netherlands and abroad. In 2017 De Appel has a nomadic program that covers the city of Amsterdam.
