I'm currently in Geneva, Switzerland.
Preparing for the European Youth Summit — EYS.
Yesterday, I visited a town in Eastern France. While taking a leisurely walk, I struck up a conversation with a local resident. As the conversation progressed, I proudly mentioned where I come from—Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Then she showed me a video circulating online and asked whether it had happened in the Netherlands and if I knew anything about it.
I was shocked. 🫣🤭
The footage appeared to show a group of Dutch police officers brutally handling a pregnant woman, Like Puff Daddy and Cassie's. Regardless of the circumstances, it looked deeply disturbing and traumatic.
Seeing that video brought back painful memories of my own encounter with law enforcement on 11 May 2023.
Moments like these remind us why accountability, justice, and respect for human dignity matter. No one should have to experience unnecessary violence or abuse of power.
As someone who loves the Netherlands and often speaks proudly about it, it was difficult to watch. But real progress begins when we are willing to acknowledge uncomfortable realities and work towards a society where everyone's rights and dignity are protected.
