Oct🌸ber is for dahlias

I felt like I was in paradise, surrounded by my favorite flowers. Dewdrops sparkling on the petals and dreamy bokeh in the background made every shot feel magical. I simply couldn’t stop photographing these beauties! 🩷

Dahlia love 🩷

Most people know Keukenhof for its tulips in spring, but did you know that you can also find beautiful dahlias in the gardens of Kasteel Keukenhof in autumn?

I could spend ages wandering around with my Canon R5, looking for dahlias to photograph. I love finding just the right angle, working with the natural light and seeing how the background melts into soft, dreamy bokeh. It’s probably one of my favourite ways to photograph flowers.

The first photo is a little different. I was focused on the dahlia when a bee suddenly flew into the frame. I wasn’t expecting it at all, and the bee isn’t quite in focus, but I really like how it turned out. It almost looks like it’s floating in the bokeh.

And how cute is the little bee flying into the bottom of the last photo? 🥹🐝

P.S. Since most people liked the last photo best, I changed the order of the photos a day later. 😅

A special encounter I was lucky enough to capture in this new macro series: a Common Carder Bee (Bombus pascuorum) foraging on a delicate anemone. 🐝

The final image in the series offers a close-up look at one of its most fascinating features: its impressive tongue, or proboscis.

Bumblebees use this long, straw-like tongue to reach deep into flowers and collect nectar from places that are otherwise difficult to access. When at rest, the tongue is neatly folded beneath the head. But as soon as nectar is within reach, it unfolds in a split second and becomes the bee’s own tiny nectar pump.

As always, every image in this series is a single-frame capture, no focus stacking. Just one exposure, frozen in time, offering a glimpse into the intricate world of insects.❤️
