They see jazz where a lot of other genres and
/or styles derived from. This is why they consider funk, soul, hiphop, disco, drum&bass, latin and even house as a musical base. Getting their inspiration from the old heroes to the latest dance floor killers. That quality of Wicked Jazz Sounds includes the sincere love for music by the performers and the unique blend of people that come to dance. Those people who love Wicked Jazz Sounds can not be placed into one subculture. Whoever you are, wherever you come from, whatever your background is, as long as you can you leave your attitude behind and dance with a smile, it means that you belong to the Wicked Jazz Sounds family. Wicked Jazz Sounds continued with her very successful weekly club nights for 18 years in the Amsterdam dance and club scene. Never missing a Sunday night throughout those years. Call it a society, an institute or what you want, Wicked Jazz Sounds has left her footprint in Dutch nightlife culture. Unfortunately the pandemic of 2020 forced the club night to end and will not return on a weekly base. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel as the year 2023 started with a continuation of the so much loved gathering of music and dancing minded people...the so called Wicked Jazz Sounds club night. *Other historical facts*
Radio: Wicked Jazz Sounds used to have several radio shows on Dutch national radio and also commercial and internet radio. From 2008 until 2013 these shows were a portal to discover old and new music plus a platform to a long list of international DJs to participate. Wicked Jazz Sounds Band: The band arose from the popular Wicked Jazz Sounds club nights where these musicians jammed together with the DJs since 2002. The philosophy ‘dance with a smile’ is the red line through the music of this band. Their Edison Award nominated debut album ‘The Biggest Sin’ was released in 2009 and they toured for two years, rocking stages throughout the Netherlands and across. The band than transformed into Wicked Jazz Connection in 2014 releasing an album with the same name.

They see jazz as a genre where a lot of other music came from. That is why they also consider funk, soul, hip-hop, disco, drum&bass, latin and even house as their musical base. They get their inspiration from the newest dance floor killers and music from the old heroes.
Meanwhile the ambitions are high and if we believe the press; ‘the sky is the limit’. According to Blend Magazine founder Phil Horneman is on his way to become the Dutch Gilles Peterson. Glamcult and DJBroadcast call Wicked Jazz Sounds an ‘institute’. The unique part of Wicked Jazz Sounds is the sincere love for music of the performers and the great people who come to dance. The family feeling is that people who love Wicked Jazz Sounds can not be placed in one subculture. Alternative or hip, white or brown, if you leave your attitude behind and dance with a smile you belong to the Wicked Jazz Sounds family.
Wicked Jazz Sounds will continue with her successful club nights in the Amsterdam Sugar Factory. The growing collective of DJs and musicians can be seen at (inter-)national leading festivals and stages more often.
The developments:
Parties: the Amsterdam based collective came from far. Since DJ Phil Horneman has named his local radio show Wicked Jazz Sounds it has evolved into a great platform which stands for the expression of music in its widest way. In 2002 he and Manne van der Zee started the successful club nights which have grown into Amsterdam’s most constant nights. In May 2012 they celebrated their 10th anniversary. The Wicked Jazz Sounds club night is a party where DJs and musicians jam together on a danceable mix of fine music. Compilation series: Most of all it is fun to make compilations and share the music we all love so much with others. It is also a nice way to present yourself to a wider audience worldwide. The first compilation with an innovative mix of jazz, hip-hop, soul, funk, house and beyond has been released in 2005. The last part was the 7th album and compiled by Wicked Jazz Sounds DJs. Some of the musicians of the collective felt the urge to make their own music and formed the Wicked Jazz Sounds Band.
Wicked Jazz Sounds Band: The band arose out of the popular Wicked Jazz Sounds club nights where these musicians have been playing together with DJs since 2002. The philosophy ‘dance with a smile’ is the red line through the music of these musicians. In the summer of 2009 they released their debut album ‘The Biggest Sin’ and since then they have been rocking stages throughout the whole country. The album has been nominated by the public for an Edison Award (Dutch Grammy).
The project hereafter was called Wicked Jazz Connection with an album released in 2014. The vinyl limited EP release saw the light of day in 2017 via Wicked Wax.
Radio show: The focus of the shows is on new and old music with a view to the dance floors and DJs across the world. Wicked Jazz Sounds had two weekend shows on Dutch national radio (Radio 6 Soul & Jazz) hosted by Phil Horneman. The show moved to the underground online station Red Light Radio – once every four weeks on a Tuesday from 12-2pm CET. http://www.redlightradio.net
Wicked Jazz Sounds Festival: One of the biggest challenges for the WJS family was to organise its own festival. Since 2015 three editions have taken place with a wide range of artists performing for over 5000 visitors.
