Hi everyone! I'm Mani, a filmmaker and educator based in Amsterdam (I teach at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). This October I'm running a small 4-week documentary filmmaking workshop here in Tokyo - Saturdays, Shinjuku, in English. No experience needed, just a camera or smartphone and curiosity.

Over four Saturdays you develop an idea, film it, and edit it into a finished short documentary with a screening at the end. My travel to Japan is supported by the Dutch Embassy in Japan, and the films get exchanged with students from my sister course in Amsterdam, so there's a nice creative bridge between the two cities.

Dream Machine: AHRIMAN, 118 minutes of fantasy-drama.

Shot in the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, France and Greece, this film is a living proof that making fantastical films on a shoestring budget is still possible. Told outside of linear time, it is a film founded upon mystic architecture, blending Persian, Greek, Japanese and Egyptian myths. With its richly symbolic and ambiguous narrative, the film remains open to interpretation, but in light of current events in the Middle East and the world’s general state of chaos, its apocalyptic themes feel especially timely.

In this scene from Dream Machine, Nima (Mani Nickpour) and Linda (Selma Copijn - ) enjoy a nighttime funfair in the city of Amsterdam. They laugh joyfully together in a glowing Ferris wheel cabin high above the sparkling city and fireworks.

The mood then shifts into a surreal dream sequence inside a real 90s Mortal Kombat 2 arcade cabinet, with intense gameplay footage, followed by eerie theme-park attractions, including a grotesque goblin-like animatronic whose voice is provided by Karen Strassman [ ] (famous for voicing Mileena and Kitana in the Mortal Kombat games). The clip ends with the couple in line for a haunted-house thrill ride.
