Following the publication of the book "Traduit de l’arabe" Moussem, the nomadic art centre, organises in collaboration with its European partners and deBuren the colloquium "L'arabe de service / Do your Arab thing". PIE Director, Sabine Frank, is to moderate one of the workshops.

The event proposes to reflect on the classical Western canon from the perspective of artists with a link to the Arab World living and working in Europe. The field of the arts often gives these artists the floor only when they are reduced to certain stereotypes. Each artist reacts on this in his or hers own way. The aim is to renegotiate a dynamic canon with the contribution of these artists making entirely part of our society.

Zahia Rahmani, responsible for the program "Art and globalisation" of the Paris INHA is the keynote speaker.

After the performance of the artist Chokri Ben Chikha, workshops are planned with:

-Cecilia Hörnel-Sunar, Nuria Medina, Milan Vracar moderated by Sabine Frank (in English)
-Nacera Belaza and Michel Khleifi moderated by Gérard Mayen (in French)
-Chokri Ben Chika et Abdelkader Benali moderated by Wouter Hillaert (in Dutch)
-Allal Bourqia et Najib Ghallale moderated by Taha Adnan (in Arabic).

Organisation: Moussem & deBuren, Re: Orient, Association Kulturanova, Liverpool Arabic Art Festival, Centre Choréographique National Basse-Normandie, Casa Arabe, Compagnie Nacera Belaza. With the support of: the Culture Programme of the European Union & the Flemish Community

Tonight at 7pm at the Södra Teatren in Stockholm: the opening of the Arab-European Literary Salon! Expect an exclusive event with author Mohammed Achaari reading an extract from his novel, a discussion with all the participants on Arab literature and authorship and some fine music brought to you by ud-player Moussa Elias and percussionist Robert Ikis.

08/04/2013

Mohammed Achaari was granted the International prize for Arabic Fiction in 2011 for his novel ‘The Arch and the Butterfly’. The novel tells the story of a left wing Moroccan writer who discovers that his son has died as an al-Qaida martyr in Afghanistan. Here is a glimpse of the extract from the novel that Aachari will read in each Saloon:

Before I lost my sense of smell, I could tell important details about the life of every woman I met based solely on the mix of scents I picked up. I could pinpoint her ambivalences, and their gradations. I would, for example, know roughly her age and the colour of her skin, the cosmetics she used, and the kind of hair she had. I could intuit the last dishes she had cooked. Sometimes I would know that a woman had just had s*x, and whether she was very, or not at all, satisfied. All of this without seeing her.

29/03/2013

In less than 3 weeks Moussem launches the European-Arab Literary Salon. The Salon is an exclusive opportunity to discover the best of Arab fiction. Three laureates of the prestigious International Prize for Arabic Fiction, Mohammed Achaari (Morocco), Raja Alem (Saudi Arabia) and Youssef Ziedan (Egypt) will perform in seven European cities. They will present their work. In each country they will meet a local writer, and will be accompanied by oud player Mousa Elias.

In 2011 the Nomadic arts centre Moussem (BE) launched the project moussem.eu with De Nieuw Amsterdam (NL), Compagnie Nacera Belaza (FR) and the Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival (GB) with the support of the European Commission. Moussem.eu enables artists of Arabic origin to create with international perspective. Now there is the book and the film 'TRADUIT DE L'ARABE'

Several of the finest and internationally best reputed authors and opinion makers delivered a contribution for this book. The multilingual book contains articles, essays, poems of Ahdaf Soueif, Abdelkader Benali, Gérard Mayen, Professor Gema Martin-Muñoz, Taha Adnan and Ramsey Nasr with an introduction of Mohamed Ikoubaân and closing remarks by Pascal Nicolas.
The film (30’) portrays Nacera Belaza, Sabri Saad El Hamus, the LAAF and Strange Fruit.
