World-class leading guitarist returns to our stage.

Gilad Hekselman guitar, Orlando Le Fleming bass, Ofri Nehemya drums

Gilad Hekselman is recognized as one of the foremost voices of modern jazz guitar. His warm tone, lyrical phrasing and natural finesse make every performance a new experience. Hekselman has played with greats such as Chris Potter, Fred Hersch, Esperanza Spalding and Avishai Cohen, and has long been praised for his poetic and adventurous playing.

In 2024 he released Life, at the Village Vanguard, a live recording from the legendary New York club. A year later came Downhill From Here, featuring top bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Marcus Gilmore. The album received unanimous critical acclaim, including 4.5 stars from Downbeat Magazine. At this concert, you’ll hear Hekselman in his most natural form: in a trio, where space and intense interplay take center stage.

‘A guitarist with a truly individual voice, as intellectually compelling as he is emotionally convincing’ (Downbeat Magazine).

Groove and swing by the masters of Hammond jazz from New York.

Larry Goldings Hammond B3, Peter Bernstein guitar, Bill Stewart drums

Larry Goldings has a unique style on the Hammond B3 organ, with which he could be heard alongside John Scofield, Maceo Parker and Norah Jones. “More ‘cool’ than ‘sweat’, but certainly not without feel”, is how Dutch newspaper NRC described his trio with guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Bill Stewart. All three play equally important parts in their brilliant melting pot of groove, melody and swing.

These phenomenal American musicians have been playing as a trio for over thirty years. Peter Bernstein made name as a guitarist playing with Sonny Rollins. Bill Stewart is a great example for jazz drummers since he played with John Scofield and Chris Potter. Their most recent album Perpetual Pendulum was released on Smoke Sessions, the label connected to the acclaimed Smoke Jazz Club in New York.

Trumpet virtuoso blending post-bop and jazz with influences from R&B and hip-hop.

Marquis Hill trumpet, Mike King piano, Junius Paul electric bass, Corey Fonville drums

Trumpet virtuoso Marquis Hill turns the tables on his album Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox. He invited close musical friends and colleagues to compose specifically for him, ranging from Chicago luminaries such as Ernest Dawkins and Geof Bradfield to contemporaries like Marcus Strickland and rapper SABA. The album also includes six of Hill’s own compositions. His approach echoes a long jazz tradition in which musicians perform each other’s work, like Freddie Hubbard recording a Wayne Shorter composition or Dexter Gordon interpreting Lee Morgan.

The result merges post-bop and modern jazz with influences from R&B and hip-hop, rooted in Hill’s belief that Black music encompasses a wide continuum of styles that overlap and strengthen one another. On stage he brings the music to life with pianist Mike King, bassist Junius Paul and drummer Corey Fonville.

Explosive tribute to Japanese music culture by versatile saxophonist. With a pre-show screening of the documentary The Tokyo Sessions by Jonathan Herman.

Benjamin Herman alto sax, BIGYUKI keyboards, Thomas Pol bass, Jimmi Hueting drums

Saxophonist Benjamin Herman has been fascinated by Tokyo’s hyper-eclectic underground scene ever since his first tour of Japan in 1989. That fascination led him to his latest album The Tokyo Sessions, recorded in April 2025 with Herman’s trio – Thomas Pol on bass and Jimmi Jo Hueting on drums – and a selection of his favorite Japanese musicians, including guitarist and noise legend Otomo Yoshihide and traditional woodwind players Akihito Obama (shakuhachi) and Ko Ishikawa (shō).

The result is a diverse tribute to Japanese music culture, ranging from underground jazz to anime soundtracks and traditional salon music. For this tour, Herman expands his trio with Japanese keyboardist BIGYUKI, who has previously collaborated with Mark Guilliana, Meshel Ndegeocello, Marcus Strickland and Q-Tip.

The Tokyo Sessions

Before the concert we will screen The Tokyo Sessions by filmmaker and twin brother Jonathan Herman. This documentary offers insight into Benjamin Herman’s creative process during the recording of his latest album. Jonathan Herman followed his brother and his band from the first ideas to the final takes. Partly filmed at Tokyo’s legendary Studio Dede, the documentary showcases unique collaborations with Japanese artists including Otomo Yoshihide, Tomoaki Baba and Akihito Obama. The Tokyo Sessions premiered on 18 September 2025 at Expo 2025 Osaka as part of the Dutch cultural program curated by Nieuwe Instituut.
