Why does a flock of starlings keep on mesmerizing us?

It's probably because we cannot predict its next move, but we also never see it collide.

It is a constant flow in continually surprising directions.

It draws us in. Keeps our attention.
Lets us be in the moment.
It can even bring us to a deeper part of ourselves, a knowing of the body and the unconscious.

These envious skills of the flock of starlings are translated by artist and allround creator Thomas Johannsen into human action for the world of performance and theatre.
He combines these swarm principles with improvisation.

Most notably he does so in the Genetic Choir, a performance group of vocal improvisers he founded. Using the swarm principles the group of performers can start from scratch, without any kind of script or any form of conducting or leadership and create a vocal composition, with a beginning, a middle and an end.
A magical endeavour of trust and skill, I find every time.

For those interested in learning these swarm principles you can take part in Thomas’ upcoming House of Voice masterclass “Singing as a Swarm” in which you’ll learn about these principes in a small group setting with a lot of personal attention and guidance.

The masterclass is on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th December, both days from 10:00-17:00, in Amsterdam.

Improvising as part of an ensemble that seamlessly, in split seconds, makes choices about the music together, that is the practice of Genetic Choir singing.
Without the need to define the genre of music, without a score, conductor or leader, you train the unique ability to be yourself as well as being connected, to be autonomous in your musical choices as well as building a piece of music with the singers around you.

In this masterclass for House of Voice you have the unique chance to work for two days with a small, committed group of 4 to 6 people and form an ad-hoc ensemble that explores all the possibilities and pitfalls of instant composing music together.

Be ready for an intense weekend with lots of possibilities to challenge yourself, shine, struggle, learn and shine again, and find musical magic together in places where you least expected it.
