June 2026 - The Cult of Beauty - CCCB, Barcelona

As Makeupbrutalism, former make-up artist Eszter Magyar began sharing provocative content, mixing ‘social criticism with human aesthetics’ on social media in 2018.

This installation is a montage of her practice straddling cosmetics and artistic mediums. She categorises her close-up editorial photographs as ‘social commentary’ and her diagrams as ‘pseudoscience. In her hands, everyday beauty items become unfamiliar or uncanny, presented as sculptural objects cast in resin. Magyar prompts her viewers to question their beliefs, to confront their raw selves beneath social pressure and to peel back the layers of the beauty industry.

I came to Essen for Manifesta. Yet somehow the real detour became Museum Folkwang .

Only later did I discover that Folkwang takes its name from Fólkvangr, the meadow of the dead ruled by the Norse goddess Freyja. Not a bad name for a place where paintings continue to outlive us.

Here are 9 works that insisted on staying with me.

1. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner — Dancing Couple
2. Henri Matisse — Still Life with Asphodels
3. Chaim Soutine — The Hotel Manager
4. Max Beckmann — Perseus
5. Max Ernst — Dark Gods
6. Otto Dix — Belly Among Flowers
7. Max Ernst — The Forest
8. Jean Dubuffet — Vie des Cités
9. Eugène Delacroix — The Lion and the Snake

Oh boy, Manifesta 2026 was not for the weak.

Thirty-seven degrees. Barely any shade. A route that felt less like an exhibition trail and more like a pilgrimage.

By the end of the day, the title This Is Not a Church felt less like a curatorial statement and more like a joke I wasn’t entirely in on.

Still, somewhere between the heat, the blisters, and the wandering, there were works that made it all worthwhile.

from La Biennale di Venezia / Alfredo Jaar

This might be my favourite work of the whole Biennale. So simple, but it holds everything.

It’s a small cube, just four centimetres square, made of ten metals pressed together: cobalt, rare earths, copper, tin, nickel, lithium, manganese, coltan, germanium, platinum. These are the materials everyone wants right now, powering everything from phones to electric cars to weapons. Each one comes with its own story of extraction, strip mines, deep sea mining, conflict, entire ecosystems and communities disrupted to get them out of the ground.

Jaar places this tiny cube in the middle of a huge, cathedral-like hall at the Arsenale, and that contrast is the whole point. Something this small, this precious-looking, holding the weight of so much damage.

It glistens. You want it. We all need it, in some way. And that’s exactly the trap the work points to. Alfredo Jaar

From La Biennale di Venezia / Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn

This one takes 45 minutes, so please have a sit in.

Through film, sculpture and installation, Nguyễn digs up stories left out of official history, tracing threads across countries to build a counter-history of colonialism. Here we follow Bouba, known as the robber, the bandit.

The connection between Vietnam and Senegal goes back to French colonialism and the war in Vietnam. Senegalese soldiers were sent to fight there under the French, and many met and married Vietnamese women. Some of these families eventually made their way back to Senegal, and that’s where Bouba’s story begins.

Born to a Senegalese father and a Vietnamese mother, “Bouba Chinois” grew up in Senegal, only to be pushed out by his own relatives. His father eventually left too. That rejection set him on what people around him called the “wrong” path and over time he became something of a local legend, a petty thief with a Robin Hood reputation, agile and rebellious, refusing to be boxed in.

Heartbreaking, but such an important story. Definitely not one to miss. Tuan Andrew Nguyen
