🚨 BREAKING NEWS: NLC DECLARES INDEFINITE STRIKE IN DELTA STATE

Pandemonium and heavy tension have gripped the Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba following the declaration of an indefinite strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council.

NLC Chairman, Dr. Goodluck Oforbruku, officially declared the industrial action on the premises of the secretariat on Friday, September 25, 2026. The development followed the death of a Deputy Director at the state secretariat, which has triggered concern among workers and organised labour.

According to reports, the NLC is demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding the worker's death and is calling for appropriate action. The union's decision has resulted in a shutdown of activities at the secretariat as workers comply with the directive.

The Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat is a major administrative complex housing several Delta State government ministries and agencies, making the strike significant for government operations and public services in Asaba. Recent activities at the complex have included meetings and official programmes involving various state government institutions.

The indefinite strike comes amid other recent labour-related developments in Delta State. Earlier this week, allied health professionals suspended their industrial action after the state government committed to addressing outstanding uniform allowances and other demands.

🚨 TAX RELIEF: FG CUTS INTEREST ON LATE TAX PAYMENTS

The Federal Government has reduced the interest charged on late payment of taxes, with the new Nigeria Tax Administration (Interest on Late Payment of Tax) Order, 2026 taking effect from October 1, 2026.

Under the new rule issued by Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, interest on tax liabilities payable in Naira will be charged at the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) + 1 percentage point, down from the previous MPR + 5 percentage points.

However, the applicable rate will not fall below the yield on 364-day Treasury Bills. The order applies across Federal, State and FCT tax authorities.

For taxes payable in foreign currency, the interest rate will be SOFR + 6 percentage points.

The Federal Government says the new framework is designed to link late-payment costs more closely to prevailing market rates while providing taxpayers with clearer and more predictable rules.

🚨 CALL FOR COLLECTIVE SECURITY: NIGERIA URGES STRONGER INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Vice President Kashim Shettima called for stronger international cooperation to tackle terrorism and other transnational security threats.

Nigeria urged international partners to share intelligence, strengthen security institutions, disrupt the financing of violence and prevent illegal weapons from crossing borders, particularly across the Sahel.

President Tinubu noted that terrorism, organised crime, cyberattacks and illicit finance exploit gaps between national security responses. He also highlighted Nigeria’s experience confronting Boko Haram, ISWAP and other armed groups, stressing that military action must be supported by development, economic opportunities, accountable governance and community protection.

The President further warned that instability in one Sahelian country can affect neighbouring nations through displacement, insecurity and disruption of regional integration.

🇳🇬 Nigeria is calling for collective action, intelligence cooperation and stronger international partnerships to address the growing security challenges facing West Africa and the Sahel.

🌍 NIGERIA, ITALY LEAD $5BN GLOBAL EDUCATION FUNDING DRIVE AT UNGA

Nigeria and Italy have joined forces to lead a $5 billion Global Partnership for Education (GPE) financing campaign, unveiled on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York.

The “Multiply Possibility: A New Era for Education Financing” initiative is targeting the 2026–2030 period and aims to mobilise funding to expand access to quality education, strengthen education systems, improve foundational learning and boost teacher capacity in developing countries.

The GPE says the campaign is designed to support education systems across more than 90 partner countries, with the wider goal of benefiting hundreds of millions of children. The original investment framework projected that a fully funded campaign could help improve education for up to 750 million children and mobilise an additional $10 billion in co-financing.

🇳🇬 Nigeria’s role: Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu at the event, said education should be treated as an investment in Nigeria’s economic future, productivity and national stability. He stressed that international funding should complement—not replace—domestic investment in education.

Nigeria also highlighted its HOPE-EDU programme, which the Federal Government says is expected to reach approximately 29 million children and 500,000 teachers across the country.

🇮🇹 Italy’s commitment: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni backed the campaign, while Italy pledged €50 million to GPE programmes and interventions. Governments and donors at the event also announced commitments supporting education for at least 370 million children globally.

According to the GPE, the mobilisation effort has already generated $3.5 billion in commitments, comprising $2.1 billion in sovereign donor pledges and $1.4 billion in co-financing commitments from development finance institutions, philanthropic organisations and private-sector partners. Partner countries have also announced $471 billion in domestic education financing commitments through 2030.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, GPE Board Chair Jakaya Kikwete, and education activist Malala Yousafzai were among the prominent voices calling for stronger and more sustainable investment in education, particularly for children and girls in developing countries.

Severe flooding has submerged several neighbourhoods across Asaba, including Infant Jesus, Okwe, Oduke and Cable Point, while Umukwata community in Ukwuani LGA has also been heavily affected.

Residents have been forced to evacuate submerged homes as floodwaters overtake roads and properties. The Delta State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), under the Bureau for Special Duties, is assessing the extent of the damage and responding to the unfolding situation.

The situation has taken a tragic turn in Asaba. A university undergraduate was swept away after floodwater pushed the vehicle she was travelling in with her father into a drainage channel at Okotimi Layout, behind Asaba Specialist Hospital. Her body was recovered two days later, according to reports.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had also identified Delta State among areas at risk of flash flooding between September 21 and 30, 2026, warning of possible flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

⚠️ Residents are advised to remain extremely cautious, avoid driving or walking through fast-moving floodwater, and move to safer locations where necessary.

To press home their demands, protesters reportedly seized and dragged ashore an official speedboat belonging to the Council Chairman, Chief Julius Takeme.

🚨 TRAGEDY IN ASABA: FLOOD CLAIMS LIFE OF UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE

A devastating flood incident in Asaba, Delta State, has claimed the life of a university undergraduate after torrential rainfall swept her from her father’s vehicle into a deep drainage channel.

The incident occurred on Monday, September 21, 2026, at Okotimi Layout, behind Asaba Specialist Hospital, as the victim and her father travelled in a Toyota Corolla. According to reports, floodwater forcefully pushed the vehicle into the drainage channel, with the young woman, who was in the front passenger seat, reportedly swept away.

Her father was rescued and taken to hospital for treatment, while the Delta State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) immediately commenced a search operation, deploying divers.

After two days of searching, a floating body was discovered by boat operators around the Otogwu River axis of Anwai Road on Wednesday, September 23. The body was subsequently conveyed to the Asaba Specialist Hospital morgue after identification by a family member.

The victim was reportedly a 300-level student and the daughter of a staff member of the Delta State Ministry of Information. She was said to have been travelling with her father to the location of her industrial training when the tragedy occurred.

Residents have raised concerns that the drainage channel has been involved in previous incidents, with eyewitnesses alleging that other vehicles have also been swept into the canal during heavy rainfall. They are calling for urgent intervention to improve drainage infrastructure and prevent further loss of lives.

The tragedy comes amid continuing concerns over flooding in Asaba. The state government has previously highlighted major stormwater drainage projects in the capital, including a 6,519-metre drainage network, aimed at addressing persistent flooding.

🚨 EL-RUFAI BREAKS SILENCE ON FORMER ALLIES

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has addressed the silence of some former friends, colleagues and associates during his current difficulties, saying he bears no hatred or resentment toward those who have chosen not to stand by him.

In a statement titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath”, published on Wednesday, September 23, El-Rufai said he supported people and causes in the past because of his faith, values and personal convictions—not in expectation of praise, gratitude or reciprocity.

He said some people may speak up for him, others may remain silent, while some may distance themselves or even deny their past relationships. However, he said he does not wish to judge them for their choices.

El-Rufai added that “adversity has a way of illuminating relationships”, saying his recent experience may cause him to quietly reconsider some relationships, but stressed that this should not be seen as condemnation.

The former governor, who is currently in ICPC custody amid ongoing corruption-related proceedings that he denies wrongdoing in, also said he seeks neither revenge nor retribution, leaving ultimate accountability to Almighty Allah.

He concluded that his priority is to remain at peace with his conscience and with God.

Speaking to Nigerians in the diaspora, Shettima cited growth in Nigeria’s foreign reserves to over $55 billion and 4.45% economic growth in the last quarter as indicators of the administration’s reform efforts.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: FIRST NIGER BRIDGE TO REOPEN NEXT WEEK

The Federal Government has announced that the First Niger Bridge, linking Asaba, Delta State, and Onitsha, Anambra State, is set to reopen to motorists next week following major rehabilitation works.

Minister of Works David Umahi gave the assurance on Wednesday, September 23, after inspecting the rehabilitation at the Onitsha Bridge Head. The bridge had been closed earlier this month after vandals removed critical structural components, including bolts, nuts and sections of the expansion-joint steelwork.

According to Umahi, the damaged bolts have been replaced and the expansion joints have been manufactured and installed. Additional works include repainting of structural components, carriageway improvements, CCTV installation and additional solar-powered streetlights to strengthen security around the bridge.

The reopening was initially scheduled for September 21, but persistent rainfall delayed the rehabilitation by one week. Umahi said the government would not reopen the bridge until the necessary structural work and safety checks are completed.

The First Niger Bridge is a major transport link between the South-East and South-South, and its reopening is expected to ease pressure on alternative routes, including the Second Niger Bridge.

⚠️ UPDATE: Umahi also directed that checkpoints should not be mounted within 200 metres of the bridge to prevent traffic build-up and excessive loading on the structure.
