My heart pounded.

I sat down slowly.

She looked straight into my eyes.

“You seem frightened.”

I nodded.

“I just overheard a woman outside.”

“She said her ex-husband secretly inserted an IUD into her womb.”

“My husband is also a doctor…”

“And for five years…”

“I haven’t been able to conceive.”

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

“Doctor…”

“I just want the truth.”

Dr. Grace handed me a tissue.

I lay on the examination bed.

The room was completely quiet.

Her face suddenly changed.

She stopped.

Looked again.

Then took a deep breath.

My heart almost stopped.

“Doctor…”

“What is it?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Instead…

She walked to the ultrasound monitor.

Staring at it in disbelief.

I quickly got up from the bed.

“Please…”

“Talk to me.”

“Is something wrong with my womb?”

Dr. Grace slowly turned toward me.

“There is…”

She paused.

“…something inside your uterus.”

My entire body went cold.

I grabbed her arm.

“What do you mean?”

“Is it a tumour?”

She slowly shook her head.

“No.”

“It’s not a tumour.”

My voice cracked.

“Then what is it?”

Dr. Grace looked at me with sympathy.

“I don’t want to jump to conclusions.”

“But…”

“It looks very much like…”

She stopped again.

My heartbeat became louder.

“Like what, doctor?”

Just then…

Someone knocked on the office door.

Knock! Knock!

Dr. Grace frowned.

“I said I don’t want any interruptions.”

The nurse rushed in, looking nervous.

“Doctor…”

“I’m sorry…”

“But Dr. Edifon is outside.”

“He said he’s looking for his wife.”

My heart skipped.

Edifon…

Was looking for me.

Had he discovered I came to another doctor?

Dr. Grace looked at me.

Then whispered,

“Don’t let him know what we’ve found…”
