TRAIT = WHAT is the character like?

CHARACTERISATION = HOW does the writer show us what the character is like?

So, if WAEC asks you to “discuss the characterisation of…”, don't just list adjectives!
❌ “He is proud, aggressive and ambitious.”
That gives you the traits.

✅ SHOW HOW THE WRITER BUILDS THE CHARACTER through their actions, speech, thoughts, relationships and reactions to events.

When a writer says “Time is a thief,” they’re not saying time can actually steal! They’re comparing two unlike things directly to create a powerful picture or highlight a shared quality without using “like” or “as.”

🎯 So, when you see one thing being directly described as another, you’re looking at a METAPHOR!
