The National Museum Port-Harcourt celebrated the 2026 International Museum Day on May 20, allowing more attendees to participate. The event began with a prayer and the Nigerian national anthem, setting a respectful tone.

The venue was lively, filled with notable guests including His Royal Highness, King Gad Harry Ekpirikpo; Mr. Victor Otuka, Curator of the National Museum; Barrister Tamunoladuekuma Ishmael; Mr. Simeon Ogan from the National Gallery; and various school representatives. Mrs. Uchenna Ezeoke served as Master of Ceremonies, guiding the program smoothly.

The Chairman delivered opening remarks, followed by Mr. Otuka's speech on behalf of the Director General of NCMM advocating for heritage preservation. King Gad emphasized the role of museums in preserving cultural identity and fostering unity among diverse backgrounds.

Students showcased colorful cultural performances, celebrating local traditions. Mrs. Bode Adeoye presented a paper on cultural preservation, followed by remarks from Deputy Director Mrs. Ngozi Alfred, who highlighted the importance of education and museums in society.

To recognize their participation, the invited schools received certificates and souvenirs, while refreshments encouraged interaction among guests. Mrs. Nsima Anam, Chairman of the International Museum Day Committee, concluded the event with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions that made the day successful. The program ended with a closing prayer, leaving participants feeling fulfilled and united.

The celebration underscored how museums connect us to our heritage and strengthen community bonds.

REPORT ON THE PARTICIPATION OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM PORT-HARCOURT IN THE 48TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF HIS EMINENCE KING E.T.I. OBUDIBO J.P., GSSRS IKWO V.

The National Museum Port-Harcourt had the unique privilege of accepting an invitation to take part in a significant celebration marking the 48th anniversary of His Eminence King E.T.I. Obudibo J.P., GSSRS IKWO V, the esteemed Amayanabo of the historic Ogoloma Kingdom and the oldest monarch in Ijaw nation. This important occasion attracted a noteworthy assembly of royal figures, elected representatives, and the caring people of Ogoloma, who came out in great numbers to honor their king’s unwavering leadership and commitment over the past nearly fifty years.

The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm and pride as the community came together to celebrate their monarch's enduring legacy through various cultural performances. Many guests were given the chance to express their views during the event, underscoring the significance of heritage and governance in sustaining cultural vibrancy. Among the speakers was Mr. Tonye Dagogo, who represented the curator of the National Museum Port-Harcourt. In his concise yet impactful address, Mr. Dagogo highlighted the importance of recognizing and safeguarding one’s heritage, encouraging the community to actively participate in preserving their rich cultural history for the benefit of future generations.

He passionately discussed the crucial role of cultural institutions in protecting heritage and called for a stronger collaboration between the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) and the Ogoloma community. He argued that such a partnership would not only enhance community involvement with their history but also improve the appreciation and preservation of the unique traditions that characterize the Ogoloma Kingdom.

The day was filled with camaraderie and joy as employees took a well-deserved break from their usual responsibilities to honor the contributions of workers across various sectors.

The 2026 International Day for Monuments and Site Celebration began with the introduction of chairperson Mrs. Atiemie Johnbull, Chief Fire Superintendent Officer, and Mr. Victor Otuka, Curator of the National Museum Port Harcourt.

The program opened with a prayer by Mrs. Agnes Udokporo, setting a positive tone. Mrs. Johnbull then highlighted the importance of safeguarding monuments and called for collective action in heritage protection. Mr. Otuka followed with a welcoming speech that expressed optimism about preservation initiatives.

A speech from the Director-General, read by the Curator, emphasized the need for collaboration in facing heritage preservation challenges. The audience also enjoyed a playlet by Seabed Model Primary School and C.S.S. Pabod, creatively illustrating the theme "How to Save Life and Our Culture."

Two informative presentations followed: Mr. Tonye Dagogo, Chairman of the International Monument Day Committee, stressed the urgent need for heritage preservation, while Mrs. Johnbull discussed cultural preservation in times of conflict and fire emergency protocols. These contributions enriched the academic discourse.
