Ijok-Irin festival is more than a fishing competition; it is a symbol of the identity, resilience, unity, and communal spirit of the Unyeada people in Andoni LGA, Rivers State. The festival brings together traditional rulers, community leaders, fishermen, youths, women, cultural groups, tourists, researchers, and development partners in a grand celebration of the kingdom's history and traditions.

Over the years, the festival has grown into a major cultural and tourism event, featuring traditional fishing contests, canoe displays, cultural dances, indigenous cuisine exhibitions, arts and crafts showcases, storytelling, folklore presentations, and other activities that highlight the uniqueness of the Obolo people.

The festival also serves as a platform for promoting environmental conservation, cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and economic development through tourism and the blue economy.

THE AKAMA I OF UNYEADA KINGDOM

High Chief JONAS RUFUS MBIRA (posthumously titled Unye-Obolo III) was a legendary warrior, cultural icon, and leader of the Obolo (Andoni) people in Rivers State, Nigeria. Born in 1933, he is celebrated for defending ancestral lands, protecting Obolo unity, and reforming the Unyeada Fishing Festival in 1960.
His lineage continues to play an active role in Obolo leadership today, with his son—Chief Rev. ASP Rufus Mbira Rtd.—serving as a respected chief and Chief of Staff to the Late King of Unyeada Kingdom.
Students, cultural enthususts and elite groups frequently advocate for his broader recognition across the entire Obolo Nation.
