This metal mask served three main purposes during the period of slavery.
Firstly, it was used to prevent enslaved individuals from eating fruits like apples, pineapples, oranges, cashews, bananas, plantains, and sugarcanes while working in plantation farms.
Secondly, the mask was employed to silence enslaved folks from singing African spiritual songs, which had an impact on the slave masters and motivated some enslaved individuals to revolt.
Thirdly, it prevented enslaved folks from teaching their children African local languages, leading to the destruction of these languages and forcing them to adopt foreign languages.
Additionally, the mask was used to punish enslaved individuals in slave camps by starving them, preventing them from consuming food or water. In some cases, slave masters would force an apple into the mouths of slaves before securing the metal mask with padlocks, rendering them speechless.
