Dr. Kelly Chronicles. Chapter 28. The Stowaway Shadow
The "Night Bus" was a hulking beast of metal, panting diesel fumes into the cool air of the terminal. It promised a direct route to the city of aquatic splendor, but as I stepped onto the metal stairs, the Supernatural Energy in my chest didn't just hum—it burned.
"Adaku, why are you holding your breath?" Adaeze asked, her voice low. She was wearing a new dress Mama Chidi had given her, but her eyes were still scanning the shadows of the bus park, the habit of a fugitive.
"The air is heavy, Sister," I whispered. "The predator doesn't always roar. Sometimes, it simply hitches a ride."
I used my Clear Eye to scan our luggage as the porter tossed our wooden trunks into the dark belly of the bus. I saw...There, huddled between a sack of garri and a crate of empty bottles, was a "Stowaway Shadow."
It wasn't a person. It was a Binding Curse, a small, pulsating knot of dark energy shaped like a spider. It had been woven from the thread of the Circle of Seven and attached to the underside of my father's schoolbooks. It was meant to be a tether, a way for Madam Iron-Lady to pull my spirit back to the market if I wandered too far.
The bus roared to life, and we began the long crawl out of the "Forest of Stone."
As the city lights of Enugu faded into the blackness of the countryside, the "Spider" began to move. I felt its thin, oily silk beginning to wrap around my ankles, trying to anchor my mind to the betrayal of the past. It was the Household Opposition reaching out one last time, refusing to welcome the progress about to manifest.
"Adaeze," I said, my voice vibrating with a frequency that made the windowpane rattle. "The hawk-bone whistle. Give it to me."
I didn't blow it for a rescue this time. I held it against my forehead, channeling the Ihie-Nne (Mother's Light) through the hollow bone. The whistle began to glow with a pale, fierce light. I reached down, not with my hands, but with my intention, and "grabbed" the spiritual tether under the floorboards.
"You cannot leash the wind," I whispered. "And you cannot anchor the sun."
I didn't just break the curse; I "reversed" the energy. I took the weight of the Madam’s greed and sent it back along the line, like a bolt of lightning returning to its source.
Miles away, in her mansion, Madam Iron-Lady woke up with a scream as her heavy iron bed suddenly felt like it weighed a thousand tons, pinning her to the floor. The tether was now her own cage.
On the bus, the "Spider" evaporated into a harmless puff of gray smoke. The air in the cabin suddenly felt sweet and light. I looked at the dark trees rushing past the window and saw, for a fleeting moment, the faces of our ancestors in the leaves, nodding in approval.
"It’s gone," I said, leaning my head on Adaeze’s shoulder.
"What was it?" she asked, her hand finding mine.
"A memory that tried to be a chain," I replied. "But we are moving toward a new dimension now. In Lagos, the shadows will have to learn a new language if they want to speak to us."
The bus sped into the night, leaving the "Iron Land" behind. Ahead lay the bridges, the ocean, and the white halls of science where the "Girl with the Golden Gaze" would finally find her throne.
I am Adaku. And my spirit has no master.
