Song of a Heart

(Happy New Year)

if i sing my heart
the way i feel the beat

my throat wire can break
and my oesophagus bleed

the surging ocean i cover
using the lid of my soup pot

whirls o'erboard my chest
though checked unchequered

the sound of my steps
as i stand on this threshold

quakes the earth beneath
sending below dust

on errand to the sky
painting my heart

before my creator
who alone knows all things

the world waits to hear me
as my friends mock my mute

and others bet my wisdom
no one sees my stock

piling over a year before
and mounting still now

nor my treasures incubating
where false steps dare not

desecrate a dedicated store
that can only yield

just like He wills and never
hurries to match thoughts

that flicker briefly and
then die before the breeze

then at the hour ripe
my heart jumps in veneration

as barn breeds sanctification
and my soul rests in His joy.®

Before the War

I was born in this locality some years before the war. I can still see myself at the outset of the crises doing some of the things we took for granted then. I could join the group that woke up early morning to fetch water up to two times from Ose, a journey of not less than five kilometers to and fro. Yet we would still get to school early enough to be part of the morning assembly. The whole environment was mostly bushy, with winding footpaths, and one or two major ways cutting across the whole of Uruagu. The beginning of the war was marked by the influx of returnees from the many cities and townships even those as near as Onicha. My age mates who survived the whole ordeal have today grown to become elders. Needless to say that what we have at hand today makes a blinding contrast with our lives before the war

WHY

if I have the breath to ask
I will ask Pamela;
when next I'll join in a debate,
it shall be on bride price.
why do you ask me, a private body
to answer your public question?
one way to find is not to search alone,
your searchlight must face target.

do you not have a mother?
then why do you ask me?
your father should tell you
if the entire umunna are fools
and only you the wise!®

What Do You See?

I see Oba children in motion
Seeking to stabilize their emotion

Everywhere uncalm as a market
Nobody is out of the charade

Calls flying across zones
Mobilizing forces in drones

Each call faunting a flag
With the bearer extolling trad

Tradition to uphold the land
And secure it from the band

Yet gangs of bands are called
And some lone ones are mauled

Silence in noise follow the camps
That foster breathing bands

People that lack time enough
To enjoy their amassed dough

Jump to form troops
Dancing their praises in groups

Others that sold shame
To buy a little children's game

These also call themselves
They know well our dear selves

Never to allow a reed
Cause our tears in greed.®

Spider Web

it weaves its net
from a dot point

extending vertically
and squarely around

its chosen area
a basket so beautiful

covering an area
to catch its games

the spider waits in patience
the arrival of her daily bread

buttered at ends
to make meals

and they come in numbers
fulfilling her labours.®

By-Pass

Nigerians of this age
Hear sound of the stage

The economy is bad
Everyone has become sad

A*o Rock suggests bypass
Forgetting the time passed

Then we flaunted cars
Now we go back to crass

Bypass luxury buy bicycle
Is money to buy in trickle?®

COma

Our country

is sick.

from the sickness of hale

and hearty being
out of order.

her sickness is like the river

that is aged from source

and spews poisons downwards

and we fetch our hatred
and benumb our brains
and senilise our faculties

then, and then
everywhere quenches

Sermon on Writing

Some want to write, yet,
Lack what to write
Let everyone know
Content is everywhere,
Everything is content.
Write it down when it rains,
And then wait,
When the sun shines, write.
Daylight and nightfall
Each constitutes assay
Do not look for language
Elaborate, no, write free.
Free people's tone and voice
Then they'll hear you!
Do not go queenic
Like London and Warwick bridges,
Write our gutters and streams,
Our farms and rivers,
We have storms and whirlwinds,
Write them to the world.
When we giggle, smile or laugh,
Yes, those are strong
Our moans, cries and wails
Each day we herd our flock,
Every year we advance
Into levels next, or
Fallen backward, years back,
Into forex quagmire..,
Write them all!

Your writing would be loud
Meaningful and universal
If it marries local bride
Dressed in the attires of
A foreign lady®

SONG OF THE SOUL

Prostrate, frustration
Lie flat and greet

Your master, Naijeria
For giving you space

Where you play freely
Kidnapping her children

Genuflect, hunger
In salute to the president

The head of all operations
Oppressing naijerians

Stand up and salute, o want
That you have won

Over all workers here
Whose wage is wasted

On the queues of fuel stations
The market the rest.®
