BENUE 2027: I’LL REVIVE MORIBUND INDUSTRIES, BUILD NEW ONES FOR ECONOMIC PROSPERITY - DR. UJA TELLS LOBI STAKEHOLDERS
By: Udeti Ernest
A top contender for the Governorship of Benue State in the 2027 elections on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rev. Dr. Tor Uja, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, commenced consultations across key blocs in the state, beginning with stakeholders from the Lobi intermediate area.
Addressing PDP stakeholders in Lobi, Dr. Uja emphasized that the development of Benue State remains his top priority, noting that his exposure from international engagements has equipped him with the knowledge required to reposition the state for growth.
He highlighted Benue’s vast agricultural potential, describing the state as richly endowed with agricultural and natural resources that, if properly harnessed and processed, could boost the economy and enhance its global relevance. He stressed the need for improved handling and preservation of farm produce to curb wastage.
Dr. Uja pointed to his track record in public service, particularly his tenure as Commissioner under the military administration of the late Ishaya Bakut, as evidence of his capacity to deliver. He recalled the era as one marked by selfless leadership, transparency, and impactful governance.
According to him, several industries and projects executed during that period by him are still benefiting the people today. He lamented the current lack of functional industries in the state, warning that Benue cannot achieve economic growth while depending heavily on external production.
The estwhile Executive Secretary, Nigerian Christian Pilgrimage Commission (NCPC) pledged to revive abandoned industries and establish new ones, stating that a functional economy would significantly reduce poverty and crime.
On security, he assured that his administration would prioritize the safety of lives and property by strengthening security agencies and supporting local security outfits, noting that sustainable development can only thrive in a secure environment.
He also promised to invest in youth development through sports and entertainment, lamenting the decline of Benue’s presence on national and international platforms. He stressed the need to engage youths productively to curb social vices.
Addressing urban development, Dr. Uja proposed the creation of a Ministry of Urban Development, which would oversee the establishment of 40 urban centers across local government areas to bring development closer to the people.
He criticized what he described as “make-believe development,” citing the simultaneous opening of multiple road projects without completion as a misplaced priority.
On youth inclusion, he pledged that 65 percent of his administration’s focus would be directed toward empowering young people, while also ensuring inclusivity for women and the elderly. He added that contracts would be awarded to indigenous contractors to stimulate local economic growth.
He further underscored the importance of education, promising significant investment in the sector, with particular attention to the girl-child as a driver of societal development, not forgetting the healthcare sector.
Dr. Uja stressed that governance must take precedence over politics, assuring that his administration would focus on delivering tangible results rather than political distractions.
He concluded by expressing confidence in the PDP’s chances in the 2027 elections and pledged to govern with integrity, experience, and the fear of God if elected.
In their responses, stakeholders from across the Lobi axis, including representatives from Guma and Makurdi, described Dr. Uja as a man of proven integrity and a seasoned administrator with a track record of impactful service.
Speaking on behalf of Guma, Elder Ayoosu Bem noted that Dr. Uja’s performance as a commissioner left a lasting impression, making him a trusted figure among the people.
Hon. Mike Adyo also commended his early rise in public service and his contributions to human and infrastructural development, urging him to remain steadfast.
Other speakers, including Elder Peter Igba and Dr. Iorahungwa, who spoke for Makurdi expressed confidence in his credibility and ability to fulfill his promises.
The Guma PDP Youth Leader and the Makurdi PDP Women Leader, who spoke on behalf of the youth and women of Lobi respectively, praised his commitment to inclusive development, assuring him of their support.
In his closing remarks, Chairman, Lobi PDP Elders Forum Hon. Charles Torbunde welcomed Dr. Uja’s aspiration, encouraging him to address the developmental and security challenges facing the state if elected.
