The Drum and the Carrier

A village wanted to honor its wisest man. They gave him the great talking drum of the community and the title "Keeper of the Town's Voice."

At first he walked tall. The drum was heavy, but the praise was sweet. Everywhere he went, people made their way and said "Chief, speak to us."

One market day, rain came fast. Children were running, firewood was slipping, and an elder fell in the mud. The chief stood there with the drum strapped to his back, wondering: "If I set the drum down, will people still respect the title?"

He set it down. He helped the elder up. He carried the firewood for the widow. The drum got wet in the rain.

That night the elders gathered. They looked at the drum, stained by rain but still sounding true. Then they looked at him, mud on his knees.

They said: "The title is not the drum you carry. The title is why you carry it. A chieftaincy is not for standing above the people. It's for bending down with them. The drum only speaks when the carrier remembers who he's carrying it for."

From then on, whenever he lifted the drum, he lifted the people first . Sunday to you all from KAYTEE BONAFIDE*
