□ What can we learn from Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Can the World Afford an Atomic War in Today's Era?
●In December 7 1941 Japanese air force attacked the United States Navy base, Pearl Harbour in the Pacific. This conflict led to a horrific retaliatory strike, the first use of a nuclear bomb in the history of war.
● The Japanese Empire's attack was to deter US Navy that might have obstructed its expansion aims of invading other Asian countries. The US declared war against Japan and this conflict made it to join World War II.
● As the war dragged to four years the US developed two Atomic bombs, the first one was a uranium bomb code named Little boy, and the second one was plutonium bomb code named Fat man. In 1945 the US dropped Little boy 600m over the city of Hiroshima. In the next three days it dropped Fat man over the city of Nagasaki.
● The aftermaths of the explosions was nothing the World had ever seen, carnage and destruction so horrific that it rewrote the cities landscapes. This was due to the physics behind the atomic bombs. Uranium and plutonium atoms that split, creating enormous nuclear fusion that released powerful heat, kinetic and light energy.
● The first stage of detonation created reactions that imitated small suns with a temperature of 3,871°C over the cities within a radius of 2km. Their flashes blinded anyone who dared to look at them from a distance as everything that was breathing beneath them turned into vapour. Around 80 000 people were instantly killed during the blast in Hiroshima.
● The shockwave's massive force leveled anything in its path, followed by fire storms and destruction. Later other people were killed by heat, injuries, radiation, and the number of casualties rose to 140 000 in Hiroshima alone.
Later after the bombing a radioactive black rain fell, and it worsened the spread of radiation. The rain acquired black colour from fire storms smoke and soot.
● In Nagasaki 40 000 people were killed instantly and casualties rose to 70 000 due to injuries and radiation. The total number of people killed in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings were estimated to be
210 000 by the end of World War II.
● As time went by Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors were now left to fight a monster they couldn't see, hear nor touch: Radiation. It's impact destroyed the DNA structure of those who were lucky to survive the blasts. The radiation raised risks of cancer and fears of high number of babies born with deformed bodies. Despite the cities being restored, about 50% of the lucky survivors later died from Leukimia, a blood cancer that targets white blood cells.
● In July 1 1968 USA , England and The Soviet Union (Russia today) signed NPT (Non Prolifiration of Nuclear Weapons) a nuclear treaty aimed at refraining from testing, increasing and using these weapons. This was due to high tensions of Cold War, a period of time the world was threatened by another nuclear conflict threat between The Soviet Union and NATO Alliance.
In August 2 2019 the USA withdrew from another separate 1987 Treaty called Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty after accusing Russia of violating the Treaty. The INF Treaty's purpose was to avoid the use of ballistic messiles at a distance of 5500km to avoid nuclear war.
In February 21 2023 Russia also abandoned a long standing 1968 NPT Treating after accusing western countries involvement in its war against Ukraine.
●This has increased the risk of a nuclear armageddon since both adversaries are aiming at creating more powerful nuclear weapons to make each other think twice if they dare to attack. Therefore this had made today's Nuclear Weapons to be thousands times more powerful than the ones used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, with the ability to end all humanity as we know it.
● Today's Nuclear Weapons can be delivered by Ballistic Missiles, rockets that leave the Earth's atmosphere and then re-enter to hit their target anywhere in the world. Soaring at the speed of about 30 000km/h these rockets can reach furthest distances in the world in 30 minutes or less, making them hard to intercept.
● Moreover, today these weapons use a stratergic system called The Nuclear Triad in which Nuclear Ballistic Missiles are stored in underground blast proof Silos, some lurking beneath oceans in submarines and some ready in the air through Bomber planes. This is made to ensure that in the event land bases are wiped out submarines could be able to retaliate after first strike.
As you read this the military personnel in their proximity are always waiting for a Pressidential order and codes to press the armageddon button. The Russian version have sensors that if they detect no response they fire themselves.
