THE VEIL THAT IS COMELY

The sky blue and gay
Beholds the heads of men
With cheerfulness to stay
With eyes sharp in modesty

She drew her trimmed sword
To scare the weak dark cloud
But sheth its shirt and sharp edges
At the foot of the confluence city

Her lovely face and eyes
Sprays cold heat on all mortals
She makes men vouch for her kindness
Like pimples and moju powder

Freedom is not given,
it is fought for,
line by line,
Phase by phase

Every censored thought,
every silenced voice,
is a chain waiting to be broken.

To create is to resist.
To write is to rebel.
To speak truth in a world that prefers comfort
is an act of quiet war.

Your voice will be questioned.
Your passion will be belittled.
Your words may be trimmed, doubted, dismissed—
but do not negotiate with silence.

Because freedom in art
is not the absence of fear,
it is the decision to express anyway.

So write boldly.
Create loudly.
Explore the depths you wish.

Freedom is not a gift.
It is your responsibility.

Poetry Review of Pistol by Edisemi
Posted on X under Roughdraft.Poetry Draft 21— The Art of Us

The poem expresses a heaviness that becomes pain from an overwhelming downpour of feelings. It starts by describing the heaviness, and further reveals what weighs heavily on the poet persona — a feeling of self doubt that negatively overwhelms the confidence of the poet persona. This self doubt is a pain that stems from unproductive actions, and unprecedented lack, despite diligent efforts from the poet persona.

The poem compares this feeling of self doubt to a pistol, confirming it is capable of killing anyone if it consumes. However, the poet persona refuses to be undone by the feeling, despite its overwhelming presence, and instead decides to contain it, not fight or succumb — a show of the poet persona's acceptance of her reality, despite desires for the eradication of the pain.

The poem is a descriptive poem of twenty nine stanzas of unequal lines. The mood is eerily calm despite the pain evident in the tone.

Mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent;
He who spares the demon sacrifices the angel.

Do not dress injustice in the robes of kindness;
Do not call silence peace when it protects harm.

Every unpunished evil grows teeth,
And every ignored cry buries the truth.

There is no nobility in shielding the wicked
While the blameless bleed quietly in corners.

Justice is not cruelty, no!
It is the courage to stand,
Stand where goodness is threatened
And innocence is shamed.
