The 2026 International Museum Day was a remarkable celebration at the National Museum Lagos. The event brought together cultural stakeholders and enthusiasts, students, professors, researchers, artists, members of the public and more to reflect on the vital role museums play in preserving our shared heritage and shaping our collective future.

The event served as a powerful reminder that museums are more than repositories of artifacts; they are spaces for learning, dialogue, cultural exchange and community engagement.

The theme "Museums Uniting a Divided World”, chosen by the International Council of Museums, highlights the role of museums as spaces that bring people together across cultural, social and political differences. It emphasizes how museums can foster dialogue, understanding, inclusion, mutual respect and peace in a world that often experiences division and polarization.

Through exhibitions, guided tours, educational activities, and meaningful conversations, participants explored the richness of Nigeria’s history and the importance of safeguarding it for generations to come.

As custodians of our cultural heritage, we remain committed to preserving the stories, traditions and treasures that define who we are as a people.

International Museum Day continues to inspire us to connect with our past, appreciate our present and build a future rooted in cultural understanding and pride.

Happy International Museum Day!

The 2026 Children’s Day Celebration at the National Museum Lagos was a beautiful reminder that culture is the heartbeat of a people and children are the custodians of our heritage.

With the theme, “Children as Cultural Ambassadors: Reconnecting with our Roots,” the event inspired young minds to embrace their identity, appreciate Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity, and proudly carry our stories into the future.

Through learning, interaction, music, dance and cultural experiences, the children were reminded that our languages, traditions, values and history are treasures worth preserving.

Indeed, every child left not just with memories, but with a deeper connection to their roots and a renewed pride in being Nigerian.
