Topic: Consequence Of Efforts
TEXT: NEHEMIAH 3:6-22
February 24th 2015.

Key Verse "And next unto him repaired Shallum the son of Halohesh, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem, he and his daughters. And after him repaired the priests, the men of the plain" (Nehemiah 3:12,22).
Devotion
Commenting on leadership ability to understand the mood of people and be thus propelled to take appropriate and timely action, a Scottish philosopher, Francis Hutcheson said, That action is best which procures the greatest happiness for the greatest numbers.

Nehemiah which means 'The Lord comforts', was the personal cupbearer to the Persian King, Artaxerxes (464-424 BC).

About 445 BC, Nehemiah received permission from the king to go to Judah to restore his people's fortunes. This did not come on a platter of gold. After he had been informed that 'the remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire' (1:3); he began fasting and praying for God's intervention.

Nehemiah mobilized the people in such a way that the rebuilding of Jerusalem walls became a matter, not only of civic responsibility but of national emergency. Everyone was involved. Even women, Shallum's daughters, were physically involved. They defied cruel mockings and jesting of their detractors.

Today, many places of worship look more like poultry farms than God's houses. Some are even without walls and gates. There is great need for leaders with vision and concern for the building of befitting places of worship for the Lord.

These should be leaders who, like Nehemiah, will mobilize everyone for the attainment of such noble objective. Above all, every believer ought to participate in making God's house, a beauty to behold.

Topic: Proving His Promises
TEXT: JOSHUA 12:1-6
February 2nd 2015.
Key verse "Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east" (Joshua 12:1).
Devotion
Many people have had the sad and disappointing experience of unfulfilled promises and unrealized dreams. They had received the promise with enthusiasm, great joy and high hopes.

Unfortunately, days become months; years passed and the promise is far from being fulfilled. While many have died unfulfilled, some still living, have lost hope that the promise would be fulfilled.

It has now become a hurting illusion. A few however, know the satisfying joy of having their dreams come true.

The text today reveals the faithfulness of God in fulfilling an age long promise to the Israelites. He had, many years ago, promised the children of Israel that He would take them to the Land of Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey.

While in the Egyptian bo***ge, they had looked forward to this promise. After many years of pilgrimage, they arrived the land of Canaan as the record of the land they have possessed shows in today's passage. One solemn truth we cannot afford to gloss over is the fact that it was not all of them that got the promise at the beginning that eventually possessed the land.

All those who were unbelieving, stubborn and rebellious on the way could not get there aside those who live right till old age and died. The Israelites who eventually possessed it did not get there on the basis of their strength, military prowess or experience at war.

In fact, the nations whose lands they possessed were stronger, more experienced and organized than they were; God fought for them and gave them the land. Their only simple role was faith and obedience.

God's promise will never fail. It may appear delayed but it will eventually be fulfilled. To have the fulfilment of His promises in your life, family and endeavour, you need faith, obedience and patience.

Topic: The Blessedness Of The Scriptures
TEXT: PSALM 1:1-6.
January 30th 2015.
Key verse "And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper" (Psalm 1:3).
Devotion
One of the famous founding fathers of the United States of America, President Thomas Jefferson deeply enjoyed the companionship of the Scriptures such that he did something novel: after reading the comforting text of the four gospels, he extracted only the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and made them into a book he titled: The life and words of Jesus of Nazareth.

Later, it came to be known as the Jefferson Bible. Historical research reveals that Jefferson in his first White House term never savoured a more blessed time than when he dreamed about writing the volume.

Such meditation upon the word of God guided him to achieve the fame attributed to him in US history. It helped in the part Jefferson played in the formulation of the Declaration of Independence, in which he gave the Creator exclusive reverence as the Giver of life, liberty and happiness.

This fact indeed authenticates what the psalmist says in today's text: if a man's delight is in the law of the Lord, meditating day and night in it (verse 2), "he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of waters, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper" (verse 3).

Can we find such blessedness and prosperity in the philosophy and doctrine of man? No. Instead, what the latter has given are a toxic mix of deadly pleasure and eventual perdition in eternity. But Jesus, the Son of God, can deliver those who reach out to Him in humble penitence.

His words will soothe them and heal the pain inflicted on them by the false teaching of the enemy. A restoration to the path of prosperity will then follow and usher in the joy and peace of salvation which "passeth all understanding".

Then would be fulfilled Jesus promise in Matthew 11:28: "Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest".

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The power of God's word brings fullness of joy.

2 Chronicles 34:24-33
Topic: HUMBLE YOURSELVES BEFORE GOD.
… Because you humbled yourself before me and tore your robes and wept in my presence, I have heard you…. 2 Chronicles 34:27(B), NIV
No one can go far in life by his own strength and power. The call to be humble before the Creator of the heaven and the earth cannot, therefore, be over-emphasized. In our text today, Josiah, a king of Judah, called his people to the altar of humility before God. This was because he realized the folly, stupidity and depravity of humanity and decided to turn from it. He led the call to a renewal and repentance to God’s ways. He destroyed all idols that competed with God almighty. He commanded all to submit before God. “And the people did not turn away from the Lord God of their ancestors for the rest of Josiah’s rule as king” (v. 33B). He did all these in humility.
The spate of terrible happenings these days requires that we have someone, like Josiah, who will lead the people of this nation to God in humility. I wish someone somewhere would stand as Josiah in our homes, churches, cities, communities, states and nation. That divine agent can be you or me! But we have to first deal with pride in our lives before we can help others do the same.

Topic: Bowels Of Mercy In Prayers
TEXT: DANIEL 9:4-10
January 29th 2015.
Key verse "And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments" (Daniel 9:4).
Devotion
Prayer is the means and activity by which men align themselves with God's purpose. It does not consist in battering the walls of heaven for personal benefits.

Rather, it is committing ourselves to carrying out His purposes. It is not bending God's will but in bowing to His will to be done. If Christians spend as much time praying as they do grumbling, they would soon have nothing to grumble about.

God had promised the children of Israel that whenever they were taken captive into a strange land, if they would repent of their sins, He would remember them because of His covenant with Abraham. Daniel, on this account, took his countrymen's place by confessing their sins.

He acted as their representative and intercessory priest. Thus, he typifies the Messiah, the Sin-bearer and great Intercessor. If we fulfil our part of the bargain, God will not fail to fulfil His. He will be faithful to His people as He is to His word. He keeps covenant and not one iota of His promise shall fall to the ground.

Daniel pleaded for God's mercy and sued for the performance of His promise, knowing that their captivity was occasioned by sin. He took it upon himself to seek the face of God on behalf of his people so God could forgive their sins and end their calamities and captivity. To this sincere heartfelt prayer, God answered by sending an angel to disclose His mind to Daniel.

During prayer, we need to focus on God's greatness, goodness, majesty and mercy. Sin and Satan are ruining people's lives. There seems to be no hope for peace and progress. The church also is not spared the crisis as she daily suffers opposition from persecutor and false prophets.

This is the right time for true believers in Christ to arise like Daniel and intercede in prayer for God's mercy upon our world.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Prayer is the heart's sincere desire.

IF MY PEOPLE HUMBLE THEMSELVES.
If my people … will humble themselves and pray … then will I hear from heaven…. 2 Chronicles 7:15, CEVHumility is a key that can open many locked doors. In an establishment, a middle aged man met an old woman carrying a hold-all bag that was apparently too big for her. The man quickly assisted her and took the bag to the elevator that carried the woman to the floor she was going. He didn’t know that she was the eldest sister of the CEO. The woman informed his brother of her helper’s humility and at the next promotion exercise, he got a lifting. It is the same with God. He has stated categorically that humility is a condition for getting all we need and ask for in prayer. With pride, nothing can be achieved. God knows and searches our hearts. He can’t be deceived. Today’s lesson is, therefore, another reminder that we all need to retrace our steps and go back to Him who can order our lives as an individual, family, church and nation to a desired end. Be not proud but be humble to get your wishes before God and man.• Birthday Blessing: Never again will I turn my back on the people of Israel, and my Spirit will live in them. Topic: HUMILITY BEFORE GOD... if you put yourself above others, you will be put down. Luke 18:14b, CEV
It is strange how some people display subtle arrogance and pride before the Lord of heaven and earth—the epitome of beauty in humility. It is ridiculous how some who claim to be children of God parade their years of encounter with God as collateral for making heaven. Such are quick to present their spiritual curriculum vitae at every opportune occasion. Some are even so proud that they cannot participate in a fellowship where a younger believer is leading. Their claim is that younger believers lack the experience and do not have the word useful for them. This is sheer ‘spiritual’ arrogance!
The tax collector could not lift up his eyes to God because he was aware of his limitations whereas the Pharisee felt too righteous and familiar with God. The Pharisee had no sense of awe for God and, thus, lost His approval, but, the tax collector realized his unworthiness and pleaded for mercy. He was pardoned and justified!
Beloved, pride goes before destruction. Humble yourself before the Lord for He resists the proud.
