Man City 'make decision on Enzo Maresca' as Pep Guardiola quit plan hatched

Enzo Maresca has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, after Chelsea sacked the Italian in January following 18 months in charge

Former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is said to be the overwhelming favourite to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The west London club axed Maresca, 46, back in January after 18 months at the helm.

City are already laying the groundwork for Guardiola's departure, with speculation mounting that the Spaniard could walk away at the end of the campaign, despite having a year remaining on his deal. Should Guardiola leave this summer, Maresca is leading the race to take the reins at the Etihad Stadium.

According to The Guardian, there have been 'positive talks' over Maresca stepping into the shoes of his former mentor Guardiola. The Italian is City's top target, with the club left impressed by his managerial record so far.

However, a potential stumbling block in City's pursuit of Maresca is that he is believed to still have outstanding contractual ties to Chelsea.

The former Leicester boss is thought to have walked away from his deal at Stamford Bridge with three-and-a-half years still remaining, plus the option of an additional 12 months.

Maresca informed Chelsea prior to his departure that he had twice held talks with City regarding succeeding Guardiola, despite being contracted until 2029 - and his shock exit from the Blues left the footballing world stunned.

Maresca had guided the Blues back into the Champions League before clinching the Conference League and the Club World Cup in his debut season, following his arrival from Leicester City in June 2024.

Yet Chelsea's board took the dramatic decision to axe Maresca despite the club sitting fifth in the Premier League and well-placed to secure back-to-back berths in Europe's most prestigious club competition.

On top of that, the Blues were still very much alive in the Carabao Cup and firmly within the top eight of the Champions League.

Chelsea are set to avoid paying a large compensation package to Liam Rosenior following his sacking.

Rosenior was dismissed on Wednesday after less than four months in charge of the Blues.

The Chelsea hierarchy acted after a run of five consecutive league defeats without scoring, the club's worst run of form since 1912.

Reports had emerged on Wednesday that the Blues faced paying a sizeable compensation package to the 41-year-old, owing to the length of his contract.

Rosenior had signed a deal until 2032 after succeeding Enzo Maresca as head coach in January.

Chelsea are not expected to have to pay up Rosenior's full deal with a break clause having been included in his contract.

Avoiding a large pay-off would be important for the Blues, after the club disclosed last month that it had recorded a Premier League-record loss of £262.4million last season.

Chelsea, however, look set to suffer the financial blow of missing out on qualification for next season's Champions League.

Their hopes suffered a major blow with the 3-0 defeat by Brighton on Tuesday, which proved Rosenior's final match in charge.

The Blues slipped to seventh in the table as a result, seven points shy of fifth placed Liverpool, while Brighton leapfrogged them into sixth.

Sixth could yet be enough to earn Champions League qualification, but it would be dependent on Aston Villa winning the Europa League and finishing fifth.

This scenario would see Aston Villa qualify as Europa League holders, while an additional European Performance Spot awarded to English clubs would drop down from the fifth place side to the sixth team.

Chelsea had cited recent performances and results as the key factor for parting ways with Rosenior on Wednesday, with the club hoping to salvage European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.

‘Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior,' a club statement read.

players Barca will let go this summer - including Rashford and Christensen

Barcelona are set to let five key players leave the club this summer, as they plan a squad overhaul, according to reports.

The Blaugrana are currently sitting nine points clear at the top of LaLiga, and are set to romp to a second consecutive title ahead of rivals Real Madrid.

However, after more disappointment in the Champions League, in which they were dumped out by Atletico Madrid, Hansi Flick and the board at Barcelona are preparing to rebuild their squad at the end of the campaign.

Spanish media outlet Marca are reporting that there are five players who have 'completed a cycle at the club' and will likely be moved on come the summer.

Marcus Rashford is one of those players. Barcelona can buy the 28-year-old, who is on loan from Manchester United, for £26million under the terms of the deal, but reports have emerged that they are not willing to exercise that option.

The 28-year-old has contributed 12 goals and 13 assists this season to help the Catalan giants run rampant in LaLiga, and as recently as last week, it was believed that Barca would like to keep him.

However, they have made a failed bid to renegotiate the £26m fee with United, who are refusing to budge on the clause which expires on June 15 – four days after the World Cup kicks off in North America.

It means there is a strong chance that Rashford will be forced to return to his boyhood club following England duty if he is selected for the tournament this summer.

Another attacker who seems set for the exit door is none other than Robert Lewandowski.

The Pole, who joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich in 2022, is out of contract in the summer, and there has been little indication that he will sign a new deal at the club.

It is believed that both Lewandowski's 'age and recent physical problems' have thrust his future at Barca into doubt.

Barcelona are said to be looking at freeing up some financial legroom, and for that reason, they want to offload stars on big wage packets.

One of those players is Frenkie de Jong, who is understood to be on just under €400,000 (£348,000) per week, and Marca suggest that he could be sold to 'ease the financial burden' on the Spanish giants.

RUUD GULLIT: Chelsea are too frantic, too hasty and keep making the same mistake

Ruud Gullit has a lot on his mind. Everything from the Premier League overpaying for average players to the mess at Chelsea and a passionate defence of Arne Slot.

As we meet on the terrace of the five-star Thompson hotel in Madrid just hours after damaging defeats for two of his former sides - Chelsea and Newcastle United - the Dutchman starts to vent.

Gullit, now 63, played and managed at Stamford Bridge and so is plenty qualified to know what success looks like in west London. But he despairs at what he's seeing.

The current crop under Liam Rosenior, a young and expensively assembled side who are now just three points clear of Fulham in 12th place, are, in Gullit's view, miles off it.

'Chelsea is still, for me, sort of an enigma,' Gullit, working in Madrid as a Laureus ambassador, tells Daily Mail Sport. 'What is your philosophy? What do you want? What do you really plan to do?

'I understand that you want to win… but you have only young players there. You need some veterans to teach these young players in training what they have to do. The mistakes they make… all the time they make the same mistakes.
