The "Tyla" Phenomenon: A Proxy for Deeper Anxieties

"If Nigerians applied the same forensic scrutiny to the 2026 budget that they applied to Tyla, we would have a balanced budget in a week. If we fact-checked politicians' claims with the same fervor we fact-check Tyla's interviews, corruption would be a losing business. The question isn't 'Why can't we?' It's 'When will we realize that our cultural gatekeeping doesn't feed anyone, but our political gatekeeping could save millions?

NIGERIAN FOOTBALL IS AT A CROSSROADS

Nigeria has now failed to qualify for two consecutive FIFA World Cups. To make matters worse, no Nigerian referee was selected to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This is more than a sporting disappointment—it is a reflection of deeper structural problems within our football system.

Why are we here?
• Poor administration and inconsistent leadership.
• Political interference in football decisions.
• Weak investment in grassroots football and youth development.
• Inadequate coaching education and talent management.
•Lack of facilities .
• Poor welfare and development opportunities for referees.
• Lack of accountability for repeated failures.

The Way Forward
✅ Reform the football administration with transparency and merit.
✅ Invest heavily in grassroots football across all states.
✅ Develop and support coaches, referees, and football academies.
✅ Prioritize long-term planning over short-term politics.
✅ Improve league standards to produce better players and officials.
✅ Hold football administrators accountable for results.

Nigeria has the talent to compete with the world’s best. What we lack is not potential—it is vision, leadership, planning, and accountability.

The question is no longer “Can Nigeria return to the World Cup?” The real question is “When will we fix the system that keeps failing Nigerian football?”

Being an activist or participating in activism for a better Nigeria does not automatically make someone a good leader or qualify them for public office.

We’ve seen individuals who built their reputations through activism but, once entrusted with public office, failed to deliver effective leadership. If you can think of any examples, share them in the comments.

Activism should not be treated as a shortcut to political office. While many activists genuinely serve the public interest, others may use activism to build influence, gain public recognition, or attract donations that are not always used transparently.

The lesson is simple: judge every candidate by their character, competence, integrity, and track record—not by their popularity or activist credentials alone.

As the next elections approach, be informed. Ask questions. Examine records. Vote wisely

State police, as currently being proposed, could become a recipe for disaster.

A police force commanded by a governor—who also controls its funding and pays its salaries—is a combination that could easily be abused.

Not too long ago, a former governor of Edo State allegedly used a local vigilante group armed with double-barrel shotguns to influence the outcome of the local government elections. If such abuses could occur under those circumstances, imagine what could happen if a governor had direct control over a fully armed police force equipped with AK-47 rifles.

Before implementing state police, we must carefully study the risks, establish strong constitutional safeguards, and ensure there are effective checks and balances to prevent abuse.

If we fail to proceed with caution, state police could create conflicts and instability on a scale far beyond what many anticipate.
