For the past few days almost a week now, my area has been without electricity. It has never been like this before. We’ve always enjoyed a steady power supply with little or no interruption. Then, all of a sudden, the power went off without any explanation.

If you have lived in a place where electricity is almost always available, you’ll understand how uncomfortable it is when it suddenly disappears. In fact, many people who moved here because of the reliable power supply never even bothered to repair their generators. They simply pushed them aside because they believed they would never need them.

But after almost a week without power supply something interesting happened.

Neighbors began bringing out old generators that had been abandoned for months, even years. One person repaired theirs, then another did the same and almost everyone was servicing their old generators to provide power for their homes in the absence of NEPA electricity.

What lesson does this teach us?

It reminds us that what we consider useless today may become valuable tomorrow. As the saying goes, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” Sometimes we discard things because they seem unnecessary, only to discover later that they are exactly what we need.
