Vernyuy Tina’s Story Behind the Choices.
In a question-and-answer video shared on her social media platforms on April 12, 2026, Cameroonian artist Vernyuy Tina answered a number of questions about her life, personality and journey.
Among them was a particularly interesting question: What would she have become if she were not a musician?
Her answer was unexpected, but perhaps not entirely surprising coming from someone who has been fondly described as “strange” on more than one occasion.
Tina revealed that she would likely have become a psychiatrist, a paediatric cardiologist, or pursued a career somewhere within the mining industry.
At first glance, psychiatry, paediatric cardiology and mining may appear to have very little in common. But when placed alongside Vernyuy Tina’s personal history, education and artistic journey, her choices begin to make much more sense.
- A Career Choice Rooted in Her Own Experiences
Vernyuy Tina has previously spoken publicly about experiencing health challenges from childhood, including rheumatic heart disease following rheumatic fever episodes, autoimmune disorders that existed alongside her RHD, as well as her later battle with dissociative amnesia.
It is therefore understandable that two of the professions she mentioned were directly connected to areas that had touched her own life: the heart and the mind.
Living with illness from a young age does not only introduce a child to hospitals, doctors and medication. Chronic illness can also affect how a young person understands fear, pain, uncertainty and even themselves.
There are certain kinds of pain for which people gradually develop their own ways of coping. Some become overwhelmed by them, while others search for ways to understand, manage and eventually transform what they have experienced.
For Tina, music appears to have become part of that process, which may also help explain why her music is often described as alternative and experimental.
Rather than beginning simply as a form of entertainment, her relationship with music developed from a deeply personal place. Art became a space through which she could process emotions, communicate experiences and express parts of herself that were difficult to explain conventionally.
As she explored music further, she also discovered how naturally the creative world aligned with her introspective personality. Just as many people had previously guessed, Tina confirmed that she identifies as an INFJ, a personality type commonly associated with introspection, empathy, idealism and a strong search for meaning.
That discovery seemingly took her deeper into an artistic world that was not always easy for the people around her to understand.
- But What About Mining?
Before fully establishing in music, Vernyuy Tina’s academic discipline was Geosciences and Mining Engineering.
Mining therefore represents another side of the life she could have pursued professionally had music not eventually taken centre stage.
The three possibilities represent different parts of her story: psychiatry reflects an interest in the mind, paediatric cardiology connects closely with childhood health and the heart, while mining reflects her formal academic background.
Music ultimately became the path through which many of these different parts of her identity could meet.
That connection between health, childhood and purpose did not disappear simply because Tina became an artist.
It can also be seen through the creation of the Vernyuy Tina Foundation, through which she has identified, supported and advocated for children facing challenges related to education, health and mental well-being.
For a child living with chronic illness, the struggle may extend far beyond physical symptoms. Repeated illness can interfere with education, confidence, relationships, emotional stability and a child’s sense of what their future can still become.
Tina’s interest is therefore not merely in helping children survive difficult circumstances, but also in encouraging them not to surrender their ambitions because of those circumstances.
In many ways, the foundation brings her April 12 answer full circle.
Indirectly, her music seems to fulfil some of the purpose behind the psychiatrist or paediatric cardiologist she once imagined she could have become. Although she did not ultimately pursue either profession, and Geosciences and Mining Engineering did not become the centre of her professional life, the motivations behind those paths appear to have remained with her.
Instead, she became a musician.
Through music, she found a way to explore the mind, emotions, pain and healing. Through her foundation, she found another way to extend care and support to children facing difficult circumstances. And through her academic background, another part of her story remains connected to the sciences and the mining career she once considered.
In the end, she appears to have found a different route towards something that connects all of these possibilities: understanding pain, transforming personal experience into purpose, and helping others find the strength to keep going.
Each choice tells a different chapter of the same story.
We continue to wish T**i a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her return to the music scene soon.
