The car sped through the empty streets of Ibadan, and with each passing second, Amina’s heart beat faster. Her mind was in turmoil, replaying Kunle’s words over and over again: “Your family is connected to something dangerous. Your father owed a debt to the wrong people.”
Her father, the man she had always admired and looked up to, had been hiding secrets. Secrets that had now threatened her life.
“Kunle,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “What do you mean? What kind of debt? What are you talking about?”
Kunle didn’t immediately respond. His knuckles were white against the steering wheel as he navigated the dark roads, his face tense and unreadable.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he spoke, his voice low but firm.
“Your father was involved in a criminal syndicate. One that dealt in things much darker than you could ever imagine.
Weapons, money laundering, trafficking. He made deals with people who operate in the shadows, people who don’t care about family, people who will stop at nothing to get what they want.” Kunle paused, his eyes briefly flickering to Amina.
“When he died, they came after you. They think you know something, or maybe they think you have something they need.”
Amina felt a lump form in her throat. She couldn’t breathe, the weight of Kunle’s words sinking in like a heavy stone pressing against her chest. She had always thought her father was a man of honor, a hardworking man who had provided for his family. How could he have been involved in something like that?
“But why didn’t you tell me this before?” she asked, her voice sharp now. “Why keep me in the dark?”
Kunle’s jaw clenched. “I didn’t want you to be dragged into this mess, Amina. You deserved to live your life in peace. But I didn’t have a choice. I’m sorry I lied, but you have to understand. I didn’t want you to become a target.”
Amina turned her gaze out the window, the passing lights reflecting in her eyes. “So, what now? What do we do? You’re telling me all this, but how does this help us? We’re already in this mess, Kunle. You dragged me back into a life I tried to leave behind. And now, it’s too late. If what you’re saying is true, they’ll come for us.”
Kunle exhaled slowly, his voice heavy with regret. “There’s one way out. But it’s dangerous, Amina. You have to be ready for what’s coming.”
Amina turned back to him, her face a mixture of anger and confusion. “What do you mean ‘a way out’? I don’t want to be part of this world anymore, Kunle. I want to go back to my life, to forget about all of this.”
“You can’t,” he said softly, almost apologetically. “Not unless we confront them. The people after you—they won’t stop until they get what they want. They’ve been watching you for months, Amina. They know everything about you. Where you’ve been. Who you’ve talked to. Everything. If we don’t act now, it’s only a matter of time before they come for you—and everyone you care about.”
The silence that followed felt heavy, as if the weight of the truth had settled between them, making it impossible to ignore. Amina sat back, closing her eyes for a moment to collect her thoughts. She had never imagined her life would take such a turn. She had never expected to be pulled back into a world filled with lies, deception, and fear. But now, it seemed like there was no escape.
“Okay,” she finally said, her voice calm but resolute. “What do we need to do?”
Kunle glanced at her, his face hardening with determination. “We need to meet with someone who can help us. Someone who’s tied to the same people your father was involved with, but who has their own interests. I know someone who can get us the information we need to take them down. But it’s not going to be easy.”
Amina raised an eyebrow. “And you trust this person?”
Kunle didn’t answer immediately. He kept his eyes on the road, his expression unreadable. After a long pause, he spoke again.
“No,” he said quietly. “But we don’t have a choice. We’re running out of time.”
The tension in the car was palpable as Kunle drove through the darkened streets, the silence almost suffocating. Amina felt the weight of his words, and the gravity of their situation settled into her bones. There was no turning back now.
As the car pulled into a deserted part of the city, Amina’s heart began to race again. The area was poorly lit, the buildings in disrepair, the streets empty. She couldn’t help but wonder where they were going, and if they were truly safe.
Kunle stopped the car in front of a small, nondescript building tucked away between two larger structures. The building looked abandoned, but there was something about it that seemed ominous.
“This is it,” Kunle said, his voice cold. “Stay close, and don’t say anything unless I tell you to.”
Amina nodded, her heart pounding. She wasn’t sure who or what they were about to face, but she knew that whatever came next would change everything.
They stepped out of the car, and Kunle led the way to the building’s entrance. The door creaked as they pushed it open, revealing a dimly lit interior. The room was sparse, with only a few chairs and a table in the center. A man sat at the table, his face shadowed by the dim light overhead. He was tall, wearing a dark suit and a pair of sunglasses that hid his eyes.
“This is the man I told you about,” Kunle said, his tone respectful but guarded.
The man didn’t move. He simply raised one hand in a slow, deliberate gesture, indicating that they should sit.
Amina hesitated for a moment before taking a seat. She didn’t know who this man was or what role he played in the dangerous world Kunle had brought her back into, but she had no choice. She was already too deep.
Kunle sat across from the man and exchanged a brief nod before speaking. “We need information. We need to know who’s behind the people coming after Amina.”
The man’s lips curled into a thin smile, but there was no warmth in it. “You should have stayed away, Kunle. But now you’re here, and you’re asking the right questions.”
Amina’s pulse quickened. This was it. The answers she had been searching for. But she had no idea if the truth would be what she expected—or if it would only drag her deeper into a nightmare.
The man leaned forward, his voice low and cold. “The truth, Amina, is much darker than you think.
