I know how stressful it can be when you’re trying to write a CV. Truth is, most of us were never really taught how to write a solid, professional CV. But guess what? You don’t have to struggle anymore.
With ChatGPT, you can actually create a clean, professional CV in just a few minutes. All you need are your details and the right prompts.
Today, I want to show you step by step how you can use ChatGPT to build your own CV, whether it’s a general one you can edit anytime, or a specific one suitable to a job you’re applying for.
✅ Step 1: Gather Your Details
•Your contact info (Full name, phone in +234 format, email)
•Education & Certifications
• Skills: (technical + soft skills e.g teaching, digital tools, communication, etc.)
•Work Experience: Job titles, places worked, dates, and achievements (with numbers if possible).
•Achievements
•Links (optional): [Portfolio/LinkedIn]
✅ Step 2: Open ChatGPT
• Go to 👉 chat.openai.com (use the ChatGPT app for better output ).
• Start a new chat.
✅ Step 3: Set the Role (Paste this prompt into ChatGPT):
Prompt 1 ( for general CV):
“You are an expert CV writer. Create a professional, ATS-friendly one-page CV using the details I provide.
Use clean formatting, bullet points, and strong action verbs.
Keep the language concise and professional.
Ask me for any missing details”
Prompt 2 ( for a specific role/job);
“Write a one-page ATS-friendly CV using the details I provide for a (Job Title). Make sure the CV aligns with this job description: [paste job description].Use clean formatting, bullet points, and strong action verbs.
Keep it concise and ready to export into Words or PDF”
✅ Step 4: Provide Your Information
Now give ChatGPT your details in step 1
✅ Step 5: Ask for Your First Draft;
Chat gpt will provide you with a draft, crosscheck it for any corrections and you can decide to add anything missing in the draft till its suit your taste and send it for a final review
✅ Step 6: Export Your CV
• Copy into Word or Google Docs.
• Fonts: Calibri, Cambria, Garamond, or Helvetica (11–12pt).
• Keep it 1 page
• Save as PDF before applying.
(Chat gpt can generate a PDF version for you if you want)
✅ Step 7: Customize for each job/role:
Always edit the CV to match the job you are applying for. Add keywords from the job description to your skills and summary.
