UNIJOS GOVERNING COUNCIL APPOINTS NEW DEPUTY VICE-CHANCELLORS; RE-APPOINTS BURSAR, LIBRARIAN

The 13th Governing Council of the University of Jos has appointed two new Deputy Vice-Chancellors for the University for a renewable term of two (2) years each.

They are Professor Tanko Ishaya as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Professor Gray Goziem Ejikeme as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration).

The University’s Governing Council through the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prince Tony Momoh considered the nomination of the two Principal Officers by the University Senate and confirmed their appointment with effect from 10th December, 2018.

The newly appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof Tanko Ishaya is a Professor of Computer Science with a Mathematics background and specialism and experience in Data Engineering, Computer Security and Forensics. He obtained his B.Sc. in Mathematics Education (2nd Class Upper Division) in 1992 at University of Jos and later proceeded to the University of Manchester, United Kingdom to pursue an M.Sc. programme in Computation which he successfully completed in 1997. He thereafter enrolled for his PhD in Computing Studies which he successfully completed in 2001.

He joined the University of Hull, UK in October 2000 as a Lecturer and was Head, Centre for Internet Computing at the University before returning to Nigeria in 2008 as a visiting Professor to the University of Jos whilst on his Sabbatical. Professor Ishaya was the founding Director of the University’s Directorate for Information and Communication Technology and later returned back to the University of Hull in January 2009 after his Sabbatical.

Professor Ishaya came back to Unijos in 2012 on special request by the University and doubled as the Director Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Pioneer Head of Computer Science Department at the University. He has served in over 40 University Committees at the University of Hull and the University Jos. A member of several professional bodies and associations, Professor Ishaya is a seasoned, multi-skilled IT professional equipped with over Twenty (20) years experience and is currently Chairman, Committee of Directors of ICT, for Nigerian Universities among many other community services he is rendering.

Professor Ishaya’s research interests are diverse and wide ranging and he has over 40 journal, book chapter, conference and research report publications and has successfully executed a number of national and internationally funded projects. He has successfully graduated Five (5) PhD students and more than 40 M.Sc. Students in Computing in the UK.

Professor Ishaya who hails from Zuru, Kebbi State, is happily married to Mrs Sharon Ishaya and they are blessed with three (3) children.

The newly appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Gray Goziem Ejikeme, a Professor of Clinical Psychology and Social Work is a graduate of Psychology B.Sc. (Hons) from the University of Lagos. Professor Ejikeme obtained both a Masters of Science Degree in Social Work (MSSW) and PhD from the University of Jos among a host of other academic and professional certificates. Professor Ejikeme is a Fellow of the Nigerian Psychological Association (FNPA) and is the recipient of an Award of Excellence in Service to Humanity by the Nigeria Association of Social Workers in recognition of his numerous works to promote the Social Work Profession and practice in Nigeria among many other Professional accolades.

A distinguished academic who believes in leadership by example, Professor Ejikeme took up appointment with the University of Jos in 1986 where he began teaching psychologically-oriented Sociology and Social Work Courses in the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences. He has held several academic and administrative positions including Head of Department, Sociology; Head of Department, General and Applied Psychology; Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences; Chairman, Committee of Deans and Directors and Senate Representative on the 13th Governing Council, University of Jos among others.

Professor Ejikeme has to his credit successfully supervised over ten PhD candidates, supervised numerous M.Sc. research projects, served as external assessor/examiner to several Nigerian Universities and attended many international conferences. Professor Ejikeme has over sixty local and external/international publications in the fields of psychology and social work and is editor of many journals. Professor Ejikeme who hails from Afugiri, Umuahia, Abia State is happily married to Mrs Theresa Uchechi Ejikeme and they are blessed with three children.

The two Deputy Vice-Chancellors have since assumed duties.

Meantime, the 13th Governing Council of the University of Jos has approved the extension of the appointment of Bursar of the University, Mr Ibrahim Alhassan and University Librarian, Dr Stephen Akintunde for a period of one year each with effect from 14th February, 2019. This follows the review of their performance by the Governing Council and favourable recommendation by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seddi Sebastian Maimako which rated them as competent and hardworking. The current Five-year tenure of both Principal Officers is set to expire on 13th February, 2019.

A 1990 Graduate of Accounting (2nd Class Upper Division) from the University of Calabar, Mr Ibrahim Alhassan is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a member of several other professional bodies. He holds an MBA in Finance and has garnered many years of experience in private and public service.

Dr. Stephen Akintunde is the 4th (fourth) University Librarian, University of Jos and has, in the last five years transformed the library to a learner-centred Creative Learning Space. He is Chairman, Nigerian University Libraries Consortium (NULIB) and is well published and widely travelled. His membership of professional bodies include the Nigerian Library Association, American Library Association, Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (United Kingdom) and International Sociological Association.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched another youth empowerment programme called P-YES.

The full meaning of P-YES is Presidential Youth Empowerment Scheme. The scheme is structured as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative driven by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Students Affairs (OSAPYSA). The program is targeted at providing solutions to the challenges of youth unemployment, through the ex*****on of direct empowerment initiatives.
In case you're curious, P-YES is like the NPOWER. However, while Npower beneficiaries are posted to publicly owned establishments such as schools, hospitals etc, P-YES beneficiaries will be trained and empowered on certain areas of vocations and businesses.

P-YES GOALS The Presidential Youth Empowerment Scheme (P-YES) has been conceived and designed to:
Fight and reduce unemployment among Nigerian youth by creating at least 774,000 empowerment opportunities.
Train and empower youth to have the capacity to empower at least one other youth within his/her immediate community.

Application Requirements and Eligibility
Applicant must be a Nigerian male or female between the ages of 18 and 40.
Applicant must have a means of identification (National Identity card, International Passport, Permanent Voters Card- PVC).
Applicant must provide a Second Level Beneficiary (SLB) to qualify for benefitting from the scheme.
Ability to communicate in Basic English language and or any local Nigerian language.
Provable upright character and a stable mind.
Applicant must provide a guarantor preferably a community or religious leader.
Ability to secure the endorsement of a local government official.
Beneficiary should posses the capacity to transfer knowledge and mentor pairs within their communities.
Applicants can be literate, semi-literate, SSCE, NCE, OND, HND, Bsc, Masters holders

Nature and Objectives of P-YES Program
The youth will undergo training in multiple vocations such as agriculture, Information technology, fashion, catering, technology acquisition and many other strategic vocations
Successful trainees will be equipped with Seed Empowerment Tools (SET)s such as rice mills, poultry accessories, branded mobile kiosks, farm implements, mobile restaurants, tents, photography units etc.
