The Osun State governorship election is more than a contest for political power; it is a window through which we may begin to understand the character of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
It will reveal the conduct of politicians, the preparedness and independence of INEC, the political consciousness and participation of the electorate, and the willingness of the ruling APC to respect the principles of democratic competition.
Most importantly, Osun will place our security agencies under the microscope. Their neutrality, professionalism, restraint, and commitment to protecting the integrity of the electoral process will be closely observed.
Elections are not judged only by who wins, but by how the contest is conducted and whether the people can freely express their will. In this regard, Osun may become a political laboratory whose lessons will shape our expectations for 2027.
What happens in Osun may therefore be more than a state election; it could be a reflection of the democratic direction Nigeria chooses to take.
