JOY'S POV

I stood transfixed because I didn't know what to say, as usual Karen walked out leaving me and my husband. I was praying down deep that he doesn't question me futher and it seems like luck was with me because his phone rang immediately and it was urgent so he had to run back to God knows where.

I barged into Karen's room without knocking, I needed to get this done with once and for all before she spills things for me.

" Karen listen and listen real good, I don't know what game you are trying to play with me but I won't take it. Do not cross your boundaries, be mindful of where you perch because I won't take it likely with you" I said angrily and tried to walk out before I felt a hand pulling back by my shoulder.

" Not so fast Mary or Gift? Which should I call you?... (She said letting go off my shoulder) I have tried to condone your excesses in this house but I won't take it anymore. You and I know what am talking about, why playing the role of a Saint when you are worst than lucifer himself? Nollywood should try consider you for a role in one of their movies. I give you twenty four hours to do the needful or else face my wrath. Now get out of My room you bloody sucking demon."

I couldn't stand her confidence, I had to run out.
" where is my phone?....( I asked no one In particular, I searched and scattered my bed, luckily I found it underneath my pillow and I dailed my mother's number repeatedly until she picked) mma what took you so long to take the call?........am doomed......Karen is threatening me to let the cat out of the bag before the end of twenty four hours..... mummy don't tell me its an empty threat...... I saw confidence in her in her eyes, she was so sure of what she was saying.....I dont want to be kicked out of my matrimonial home.....okay ma please do something about it, remember just twenty four hours. "
After the call with my mother I felt a bit relieved but not fully settled.

I went about my daily duties as a full time house wife After about five hours Karen met me in the living room where I was patiently waiting for my mother's response.
" don't be carried away because you have nineteen more hours to do the needful.( She turned back while trying to leave) and tell your mother to try another means because what she brought looks too childish and tell her that she can't kill me And my father easily like she killed Roland." She said and walked away slamming the door behind her.

" whattttt.. how did she know about Roland????"
I started sweating immediately.........

JOY'S POV

I was so confused that I didn't know what to say, Who is Karen? I thought sadly to myself. I comported myself and continued cooking. Twenty minutes later dinner was served and we began to eat in total silence, the dining room was as quite as a grave, only the chipping sound of the plate and cutleries could be heard.

We settled down in the sitting room for some introduction as instructed by my husband, left for me we would have just heeded to the room so I can avoid his daughter.

"Mmmmm" Daniel cleared his throat and continued "Karen like I told you few weeks ago that your new mother will be coming soon, finally she is here, and babe this is Karen my dau... sorry our daughter, I already told her a whole lot about you."

"Karen how are you doing and how have you been coping?" I asked her

"Mary James I will answer your questions when you answer mine.( She stood up and went to hug her father) good night daddy." She said and walked out. I was dumbfounded, how on earth did she know my real name? No one has called me that since 18 years now. Even my husband doesn't know that name. WHO IS THIS CHILD?

" Babe is that your name? And how did she know your surname?" Daniel asked looking a bit confused

"Ehhhm I told her the surname earlier but I guess she forgot the first name which is Gift." I lied to my husband to avoid further questions. We gisted for a while and my husband asked that we should go the room, I told him to go that I want to cover the pots well. After he left I went to Karen's room to make some enquiries but she didn't even answer me. After pushing and nothing was coming from her I had to let her be and I went to bed to join my husband.

Days to weeks and to months, I was yet to be pregnant, Karen avoided me like a plague, I tried all I could to get her to tell me what she knows but she wouldn't spill. I even called my mother and told her about Karen's discovery of my past and she laughed it off and told me not to bother that it was because she feels threatened by my presence.

My husband was always there to console me when I begin to think of my childlessness after being married for seven months. Different tests and we were both fine. I started praying and asking God to forgive all my sins and give me children, I don't want to be a case of women married for years without children.

My problems started sooner than I had expected, Karen came back from school one day and came straight to my room and entered without knocking.
She went straight to my bed and sat down, I was coming out of the toilet when she barged in.

"Mary am sure you wouldn't want to see the bitter side of me, I have been patient enough with you, I have waited for you to right your wrongs but you want it the hard way I guess...... I love my father more than anything in this world, I won't hesitate to kill you in order to save him." She said with her eyes fixed at a particular spot.

"Karen who are you and what do you know?" I asked her with so much anger in my tone.

"I am your fear, your nightmare and your demise."

"What is going on here?" My husband barged in and from the look of things he has been eavesdropping. ..........

JOY'S POV

I had mixed feelings going with my husband to his house, we just got married and in our world every lady who succeeded in getting married to the man of her dreams should be happy going with him right? But am not, not because he doesn't love me NO! I know Daniel loves me with all his heart but I wasn't comfortable with the fact that I will be sharing same house with his 16 year old daughter.

He told me about the circumstances surrounding her birth which sounds scary but then I had to go. I bade my family good bye and left with my husband. All through the trip from kaduna to Abuja I was so moody and Daniel couldn't help but wonder what was wrong with me.
"Babe are you sure you don't want to share what is wrong?" Daniel kept asking till we got to our destination.

We began to take my luggages inside, I couldn't help but wonder why I haven't seen his daughter.
"Ehm my love, where is Karen?" I finally asked when we got to our room.
"She normally spends her day with an elderly woman down the road" Daniel answered.

I was busy in the kitchen later in the evening when Karen walked in, she stood at the entrance and didn't even greet or say anything to me. I was wondering what sought of upbringing she had. If it were to be in my house, she would have received the beating of her life by now. But then I wouldn't want to get on the bad side of my husband just on the first night in his house.
"Karen how are you?" I finally asked her after what it looks like we have been staring at each other since the beginning of the world.
"Does my father know of the atrocity you committed over 18 years back? Or you will prefer I tell him?" She said and walked out.

I was shocked and taken aback because no one knows my secret except my mother...
