We are not asking for the almajiri system to be torn down. We are asking for it to finally be held to account.
In my latest video, I speak on why banning a centuries-old system overnight, with nothing built to replace it, does not save these children. It only moves them from one darkness into a swifter one. What we need instead is simple to state, even if it is hard to build: no child placed into anyone’s care without a name attached, without someone answerable for him.
This is not a policy I claim to have designed. That work belongs to people wiser in these matters than I am. But the demand itself, that no child in this country remain untraceable, unaccounted for, is not a policy question. It is simply what a decent society owes its own children.
