History of Biafra and Why May 30 Is Important
The Republic of Biafra was declared on May 30, 1967, by Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, who was then the military governor of Nigeria's Eastern Region. The declaration came after political tensions, ethnic violence, and disagreements over the structure of Nigeria following a series of military coups in 1966.
The declaration led to the Nigerian Civil War, which lasted from July 1967 until January 1970. The war caused widespread suffering, displacement, and famine, resulting in the deaths of many civilians and soldiers.
In January 1970, Biafra surrendered and was reintegrated into Nigeria. Since then, the war has remained an important and often emotional part of Nigerian history.
Why May 30 is observed:
It marks the declaration of Biafra in 1967.
Many people use the day to remember those who died during the war.
Supporters of Biafran self-determination view it as a symbol of their historical experience and aspirations.
Others observe it primarily as a memorial day for victims of the conflict.
The legacy of Biafra continues to influence discussions about national unity, federalism, political representation, and regional development in Nigeria today.
