The introduction of the book reads:
Introduction
Literary history is replete with famous poets who pen beautiful poems for children. Joining this commendable and important list of important poets is Deborah Uzoma with a fresh harvest of bright and juicy poems in her gripping and thought-provoking book; My Father’s House and Other Poems. Written under different themes that children can easily relate to, the poet does an exceptional job of balancing the beautiful topics raised in the poems against the uncertain realities of the society in which they are set.
Uzoma effectively writes like a lover of children in the title poem, “My Father’s House”:My Father's house
Is beautiful.
Beautiful!
Beautiful!
My Father's house is
Beautiful.
God bless my father.
In “Good Morning” the author combines a spiritual theme with the African cultural theme of respect for elders while maintaining sobriety andlove in the beautiful work of art:Every morning, I wake up
And say my prayers.
To my Daddy and Mummy
I say, “Good morning.”
They hug me
And say, “Good morning too,”
And “How are you?”
I say, “I am fine.
Thank you.
Good morning, Dad.
Good morning, Mum.
I love you.
I love you.”
From the above, it is obvious that My Father’s House and Other Poems is a delightful children’s poetry book with its subtle and extremely accessible style. However, as in every Children’s book, the collection will be greatly enriched with beautiful illustrations.
