Niger NSCDC Custody Deaths:

*Families Reject ₦100,000 Token, Demand Justice Over Alleged Killings*

Families of the victims who allegedly died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State have reportedly returned the ₦100,000 said to have been given to them as support by the Niger State Government.

According to reports, the families rejected the money, describing it as "blood money," and insisted they cannot accept the token in exchange for the lives of their loved ones.

The deceased were alleged to have been killed while in detention by officials of the corps, a claim that has sparked outrage and calls for an independent investigation.

The families are demanding justice and accountability, urging the authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths and ensure those found culpable are prosecuted.

As of the time of this report, neither the Niger State Government nor the NSCDC has issued an official response to the families' action.

*U.S. DEA Tells Court Release Of Tinubu-Related Drug Records Could Expose Confidential Sources, Investigative Techniques*

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has defended its decision to withhold portions of investigative records connected to a criminal investigation involving Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing the protection of confidential sources, investigative techniques and other law-enforcement information.

The position was contained in a September 23, 2026 filing by the U.S. government before the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit brought by Aaron Greenspan.

The case, Aaron Greenspan v. Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys et al., involves requests for records relating to Tinubu and other individuals in connection with a U.S. investigation into an alleged drug-trafficking and money-laundering operation.

In the latest filing, the government defended the DEA's use of several FOIA exemptions to withhold information contained in its investigative records.

The filing specifically refers to a declaration submitted by the DEA, identified as the Davis Declaration, as well as an accompanying Vaughn Index explaining the basis for the agency's withholding of information.

*DEA Says Records Contain Similar Investigative Material*

The plaintiff had challenged the DEA's Vaughn Index, arguing that it contained similar justification paragraphs and entries.

The government rejected the criticism, explaining that the DEA records consisted of similar types of investigative documents, including DEA-6 Reports, DEA-292 Reports and DEA-210 Reports.

According to the government, because the records were similar investigative forms and types of investigative records, the justification for withholding information from them would naturally involve similar reasoning and exemptions.

The filing therefore confirms that the records at issue include formal DEA investigative reports connected to the criminal investigation.

*DEA Cites Protection Of Confidential Sources*

One of the most significant portions of the government's filing concerns information relating to confidential sources.

The government said the DEA had fully addressed the potential harm that could result from disclosure of such information in its declaration.

Quoting the DEA's Davis Declaration, the filing states: “Any information related to confidential sources ‘could reasonably be expected to disclose the identity of a confidential source.’”

The DEA further stated that information relating to confidential sources “has long been afforded the most comprehensive protection of all the FOIA exemptions.”

The agency then explained why it considered the information sufficiently sensitive to remain withheld, stating: “Due to the significant protections afforded to prevent the disclosure of this type of information, DEA determined that the significance of exempting this type of information outweighed the relatively insignificant public interest in the disclosure of the information.”

The DEA's position is therefore that releasing the information could expose the identities of people who provided information to law enforcement, while the agency considers the protection of those sources to outweigh the public interest in disclosure.

*DEA Invokes Investigative Techniques In Drug Operation*

The government also defended the use of FOIA Exemption 7(E) to withhold non-public details of investigative techniques.

The filing says the plaintiff conceded that the FBI could withhold “non-public details of investigative techniques,” but sought an order compelling the government to produce a redacted ex parte declaration filed under seal.

The government argued that this did not undermine its reliance on Exemption 7(E), particularly because the records arose in the context of “a criminal investigation of a drug operation.”

The argument indicates that, beyond information that could identify confidential sources, some of the withheld material could reveal how law-enforcement authorities conducted or documented their investigation.

*Records Linked To Tinubu Drug Investigation*

The September 23 filing is largely focused on the government's legal justification for withholding information. However, the broader court record establishes the connection between the FOIA litigation and Tinubu.

In an April 2025 ruling in the same case, U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell addressed FOIA requests seeking criminal investigative records concerning Tinubu and Abiodun Agbele in connection with a federal investigation into an international drug-trafficking and money-laundering operation.

The earlier proceedings concerned requests for records from the FBI and DEA relating to a Nigerian heroin-distribution organisation that was active from approximately 1988 to 1994 or later.

The court record identified “Tinubu, Bola Ahmed” among the individuals referenced in the relevant request.

Judge Howell's 2025 ruling also dealt with an earlier attempt by the agencies to issue what is known as a Glomar response, under which an agency refuses to confirm or deny whether responsive records exist.

The judge concluded that the government could not rely on that approach in the circumstances of the case because the existence of the investigation had already been officially acknowledged.

However, the September 23 filing does not disclose the substantive contents of the DEA records concerning Tinubu.

It does not state how many records mention him, what confidential sources told investigators, whether any source made allegations against him, or whether the DEA found evidence of criminal wrongdoing by Tinubu.

It also does not disclose what transactions investigators identified or whether the withheld records contain evidence establishing any criminal conduct by him.

‎When the missing band member eventually returned and realized the group had already left the country without him, he was devastated. What should have been the greatest breakthrough of his musical career vanished because of one careless decision.

‎Overwhelmed with sorrow and regret, he burst into uncontrollable tears.

‎That heartbreaking moment later inspired the classic song Ebezina.
‎
‎In Igbo language, “Ebezina” simply means:

‎“Do not cry again”
‎
‎Through the song, Osadebe was consoling the abandoned band member while also reminding him that he ignored a vital instruction because he went searching for “Akwuna.”

‎One of the most powerful lines in the song says:
‎
‎“Ogazi amaka mma, mana ejighi ya ago mmuo.”
‎
‎The line is deeply symbolic rather than literal.
‎
‎Although "Ogazi" directly refers to a guinea fowl, Osadebe used it metaphorically.The beauty and attraction of the guinea fowl became a poetic representation of women, temptation, pleasure, and probably other beautiful distractions.

‎The hidden meaning behind the line is profound:
‎
‎Pleasure may be enjoyable, Desire may appear irresistible. But excessive attachment to temporary enjoyment can destroy life-changing opportunities
‎
‎This is why Ebezina is far more than an ordinary highlife song.
‎
‎It is wisdom hidden inside music, a lesson wrapped in rhythm; a warning about how momentary satisfaction can sometimes cost a person their treasures.

I am thoroughly embarrassed about the level of hostility being exhibited by our brother and friend Prof Charles Soludo towards Peter Obi. He cannot claim to be self made.

People like us participated in making him. I was Prochancellor and Chairman of Council at the University of Nigeria when his papers came for approval for Professorship.

I could have found reason to withhold or deny assent, but we put him out and praised his work. That made President Obasanjo appoint him Economic Adviser without hesitation.

Three years later, three of us Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Oby Ezekwesili and myself were attending a Conference in Brussels when President Obasanjo called Ngozi Okonjo.

Iweala was then Finance Minister to ask for the nomination of Governor of Central Bank. We gave a unanimous vote for Prof Charles Soludo...Ministers of Finance, Education and Due Process. As Ndigbo we were proud to support our brother. He was not the sole candidate. Obasanjo gave him the position. Everyone rejoiced. That was the power of Umunna.

Years later, I cannot imagine the same person who benefitted resoundingly from the support of Umunna being the one to pull down his own brother who is enjoying overwhelming support elsewhere. I am truly ashamed of him. Ndigbo should not allow him to get away with this. He should be made to withdraw all his damaging statements against Obi. There is still time for him to reverse himself in this matter.
