How to Handle People Who Only Remember You When They Need Something

Have you ever noticed that some people can go for months without checking on you, but the moment they need a favour, they suddenly remember your phone number?

“Hi! How are you?”

You may even get excited because you think they genuinely want to know how you're doing.

Then comes the real reason:

“Please, I need your help with something.” 😅

It can be frustrating, especially when you realise that the relationship seems to exist mainly when they need something from you.

But before you become angry or completely cut someone off, look at the pattern.

Sometimes people are genuinely busy. Sometimes they may assume you are doing fine and don't need checking on. And sometimes, yes, there are people who only maintain relationships when they need something.

The important thing is to recognise the difference.

So, how should you handle it?

1. Don't feel obligated to say yes every time.

Someone asking for help doesn't automatically mean you must provide it.

If you can't help, you can simply say, “I'm sorry, I can't help with that right now.”

You don't need a long explanation.

2. Pay attention to the pattern.

If someone consistently disappears when everything is fine but appears whenever they need money, connections, favours or assistance, take note.

You don't have to become suspicious of everyone, but you should be aware of one-sided relationships.

3. Set boundaries without being rude.

Being kind doesn't mean making yourself permanently available.

You can care about people while still deciding what you are willing and able to do for them.

4. Don't give more than you can afford to lose.

Whether it is money, time, energy or emotional support, don't repeatedly give from a place that leaves you struggling.

5. Don't let resentment consume you.

If you realise that someone doesn't value the relationship in the same way you do, adjust your expectations.

You don't necessarily have to fight with them.

Sometimes, you simply need to stop expecting from the relationship what it has never consistently provided.

And remember...

Relationships should not always be measured by how often someone calls.

People have responsibilities, challenges and busy seasons in life.

But when someone repeatedly remembers you only when they need something, you are allowed to notice the pattern and respond accordingly.

Be kind, but have boundaries.
Be helpful, but don't allow yourself to be used.
Give when you genuinely want and are able to—not because you are afraid of disappointing someone.

You don't have to become cold because some people take advantage of your kindness.

Keep your good heart, but add wisdom to it.

Last night, I started watching the South African movie The Polygamist, and I couldn’t help but wonder 🤔: What gives some ladies the nerve to date a married man and still act so authoritative?

The foremost mistress, Matipa, is certainly not the only one telling Mr. Jonas Gomorrah, the adulterous husband, to divorce his wife.

When the man temporarily went back to his wife and family, she marched to his matrimonial home and demanded to know why he didn’t come home the previous night. Like… how? 🙄 What audacity!

If you are dating a married man, stay in your place. Don’t torment the legal wife and the children. It is very wrong.

Yes, it is a movie, but these are real-life situations that many women are battling with.

Joyce, Mrs. Gomorrah, was seen fighting tirelessly to keep her home. It’s so sad! 💔

My heart goes out to every woman dealing with such a reality. May God give you the strength, wisdom, and peace to navigate it. ❤️

Learn to Disagree Without Disrespecting People

We are not always going to agree with everyone.

People have different experiences, values, opinions, backgrounds and ways of looking at life. So disagreement is a normal part of human relationships.

The problem is not always disagreeing.

The problem is how we disagree.

You can say, “I don't see it that way,” without insulting someone.

You can challenge an opinion without attacking the person who expressed it.

You can say no without being rude.

You can have a different perspective without trying to make the other person feel foolish.

Emotional maturity means understanding that being right, or believing you are right, does not give you permission to disrespect someone.

Here are a few things to remember:

1. Listen before responding.
You may understand someone's point better when you actually listen instead of preparing your response while they are talking.

2. Address the issue, not the person.
Say, “I disagree with that idea,” rather than attacking someone's intelligence or character.

3. Don't turn every disagreement into a competition.
Not every conversation needs someone to win.

4. Know when to walk away from an unproductive argument.
Sometimes the most mature response is to say, “We see this differently, and that's okay.”

5. Remember that disagreement doesn't automatically mean disrespect.
Someone can care about you and still have a completely different opinion.

Healthy relationships don't require everyone to think alike.

They require people to know how to communicate when they don't.

You can stand firmly by what you believe while still treating other people with respect.

That is emotional maturity.

Before responding during a disagreement, ask yourself:

“Am I trying to communicate my point, or am I trying to hurt this person because we disagree?”

That small pause can change the entire conversation.

It is possible to have different opinions without turning every disagreement into a fight....

Small Expenses Can Quietly Become Big Financial Problems 💰

Sometimes, it isn't one big purchase that puts pressure on our finances.

It is the small expenses we barely notice.

₦1,000 here.
₦2,000 there.
A quick snack.
An unplanned ride.
Another food delivery.
A subscription you hardly use.
A little impulse shopping because “it's not that much.”

Each expense may seem harmless on its own.

But when these little expenses happen repeatedly, they can add up to a significant amount by the end of the month.

For example, spending just ₦1,500 a day on things you didn't really plan for amounts to about ₦45,000 in 30 days.

That's money that could have gone toward food, savings, bills, debt repayment, an emergency fund, or something else that genuinely matters to you.

This doesn't mean you should never enjoy your money.

The problem is spending without paying attention to where the money is going.

Try this simple habit:

For one week, write down every single thing you spend money on, no matter how small.

At the end of the week, look at the list.

You may discover that some of your money is disappearing into things you don't actually value very much.

The goal isn't to stop spending completely.

It's to become more intentional about your spending.

Small expenses are not always the problem. Unnoticed and repeated spending can be.

Before spending, ask yourself:

👉 Do I really need this?
👉 Did I plan for it?
👉 Will I still be happy I spent this money tomorrow?

A little awareness can make a big difference over time.

💜 Time with Jummie Tip

Don't only ask, “Can I afford this?”

Also ask, “How often am I doing this?”

Something that feels affordable once may become expensive when repeated every day.

Do you know that little, frequent spending can affect your finances?

I know you will find it hard to believe that the whole of these veggies cost just #1,000😳 but it is what it is🤗
