🇳🇬 Murtala Muhammed (1938–1976)
Early Life:
Murtala Ramat Muhammed was born on November 8, 1938, in Kano State, Nigeria. He came from a Fulani Muslim family and was educated at Government College Zaria (now Barewa College).
Military Career:
He joined the Nigerian Army in 1958 and trained at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in the United Kingdom. He rose quickly through the ranks and became known as a bold and decisive officer.
Role in Nigerian Civil War:
During the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), Murtala commanded troops for the Federal side and played a major role in bringing the war to an end.
Head of State (1975–1976):
On July 29, 1975, Murtala Muhammed came to power after a bloodless coup that removed General Yakubu Gowon.
As Head of State, he introduced major reforms, including:
Reorganizing the civil service
Fighting corruption
Preparing to return Nigeria to civilian rule
Initiating the plan to move Nigeria’s capital from Lagos to Abuja
He was admired for his discipline, courage, and straightforward leadership.
Assassination:
On February 13, 1976, Murtala Muhammed was assassinated in Lagos during a failed coup attempt led by Lt. Col. Buka S**a Dimka. His deputy, Olusegun Obasanjo, succeeded him as Head of State.
Legacy:
Nigeria’s main international airport, Murtala Muhammed International Airport (Lagos), is named after him.
He remains a symbol of honesty, courage, and reform in Nigeria’s history.
His face appeared on the ₦20 note in recognition of his service.
