Electricity Meters, Not for Sale – FG

Electricity meters will henceforth be provided and installed free of charge as the federal government has directed electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) and meter installers to henceforth provide smart meters for consumers at no cost, warning DISCOs who may wish to shortchange Nigerians to desist or face prosecution.

The federal government, speaking recently through the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, revealed that meters have been procured under the World Bank–funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), to improve billing and collections across the power sector. He therefore described any attempt to charge consumers for both the provision and installation of these meters as acts of illegality that are unacceptable.

With support from the World Bank-funded DISREP, the federal government aims to import a total of 3.4 million meters. Already, about one million of these have been delivered.

Full metering of consumers will enhance transparency in billings, boost consumers’ preparedness to pay and improve liquidity in the sector which will ultimately improve service delivery to the consumers.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has approved the creation of the Ondo State Senior Secondary School Education Board (OSSEC) to enhance infrastructure development and management in senior secondary schools. The move aligns with the Federal Government’s NSSEC Act, which mandates states to provide a 5% counterpart fund for school infrastructure improvements.

Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, said the board will partner with the National Senior Secondary School Education Commission (NSSEC) to address infrastructural gaps. Dr. Akindele Ige, a member of the establishment committee, noted that OSSEC will improve funding, management, and student enrollment.

While the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEC) will continue overseeing primary and junior secondary schools, OSSEC will focus solely on Senior Secondary Schools (SSS1–SSS3) under the Ministry of Education without overlapping existing agencies.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the temporary suspension of the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the decision was made after a meeting between the police chief and a delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Eji-Oba High School, Oba-Ile, Ondo State, held its orientation ceremony today to formally welcome newly admitted students into the institution.

The Principal, Mrs. Adesola Ogunwolire, who appeared in the school uniform alongside members of the management staff, addressed the gathering and charged the students to maintain good behavior throughout their stay in the school. She stressed that discipline and moral conduct remain central to the values of the institution.

The program, which drew the participation of teachers and administrators, featured motivational messages and guidance aimed at helping the new students adjust to academic and social life within the school environment.

The CAF Disciplinary Board met to deliberate on the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Qualifier that was scheduled between Libya and Nigeria.

The Disciplinary Board decided as follows:

1. Libya Football Federation was found to have breached Article 31 of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
2. The match No.87 Libya v. Nigeria of the TotalEnergies CAF African Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October 2024 in Benghazi) is declared lost by forfeit by Libya (by a score of 3-0).
3. The Libya Football Federation is ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000. The fine is to be paid within 60 days of notification of the present decision.
4. All other and further motions or prayers for relief are dismissed.

In preparation for the Dangote Refinery's scheduled petrol loading on Sunday, September 15, 2024, NNPC Ltd. has been mobilizing trucks to the refinery's fuel loading gantry in Ibeju-Lekki.

As of Saturday afternoon, NNPC Ltd. had deployed over 100 trucks, with hundreds more en route.
