Chord construction is the process of building chords from scale degrees. A chord is formed when three or more notes are played together, all derived from a scale.

Triads are the foundation of chords and are built using the 1st, 3rd, and 5th scale degrees:

Major: 1 – 3 – 5 (bright, happy sound)
Minor: 1 – ♭3 – 5 (sad, emotional sound)
Diminished: 1 – ♭3 – ♭5 (tense, unstable)
Augmented: 1 – 3 – ♯5 (mysterious, unresolved)

Suspended chords replace the 3rd:
Sus2: 1 – 2 – 5
Sus4: 1 – 4 – 5

7th chords add a fourth note (the 7th) to the triad, giving more color and depth:
Major 7: 1 – 3 – 5 – 7
Dominant 7: 1 – 3 – 5 – ♭7
Minor 7: 1 – ♭3 – 5 – ♭7
Diminished 7: 1 – ♭3 – ♭5 – ♭♭7
Understanding chord construction helps musicians identify chords, build progressions, improvise, and play confidently in any key.

A major 9th chord on piano is a rich, 5-note chord built from the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th notes of the corresponding major scale, adding bright, jazzy color, like C-E-G-B-D for Cmaj9, often played with the root in the left hand and stacked notes in the right, but playable in many voicings. You form it by taking a major triad (1-3-5) and adding the major 7th and the 9th (which is the same as the 2nd note of the scale, one octave up).

How to Build a Major 9th Chord (e.g., Cmaj9)
1. Start with the Root: C.
2. Add the Major Triad: C (1), E (3), G (5).
3. Add the Major 7th: B (from the C Major scale).
4. Add the Major 9th: D (the second note of the C major scale, one octave higher).
Result: C - E - G - B - D.
