Chord construction is the process of building chords from scale degrees. A chord is formed when three or more notes are played together, all derived from a scale.
Triads are the foundation of chords and are built using the 1st, 3rd, and 5th scale degrees:
Major: 1 – 3 – 5 (bright, happy sound)
Minor: 1 – â™3 – 5 (sad, emotional sound)
Diminished: 1 – â™3 – â™5 (tense, unstable)
Augmented: 1 – 3 – ♯5 (mysterious, unresolved)
Suspended chords replace the 3rd:
Sus2: 1 – 2 – 5
Sus4: 1 – 4 – 5
7th chords add a fourth note (the 7th) to the triad, giving more color and depth:
Major 7: 1 – 3 – 5 – 7
Dominant 7: 1 – 3 – 5 – â™7
Minor 7: 1 – â™3 – 5 – â™7
Diminished 7: 1 – â™3 – â™5 – â™â™7
Understanding chord construction helps musicians identify chords, build progressions, improvise, and play confidently in any key.
