This is Cynthia Kerubo Onchiri, 16-year-old Form Two student at Bong'onta Secondary School, in Keroka, which is in Nyaribari Masaba constituency.
We met her at the just concluded Kisii Regional Book Fair, organised by Kenya Publishers Association.
She had two objectives to promote her book, Nyasaina's Sad Moments and to meet her idol, Scholastica Moraa, a published poet and award-winning short story writer.
Kerubo's book addresses the plight of a young girl, Nyasaina, who's life is set back many obstacles, right from home, a fact that negatively impacts her education.
She told Maisha Yetu that when she wrote the story, she took it to Dr Alfred Nyamwange, the school's deputy head teacher, who is also a writer, asking him to support her writing talent. "He was impressed with my work, organised for my manuscript to be typed and then submitted it to the publisher," said Kerubo.
Nyasaina's Sad Moments came out on March 28, this year. "I could not believe that my book was finally in print," she explained with a shy smile. "It felt like a dream."
Her dream of meeting Scholastica Moraa was made possible by her English teacher, Dorothy Bwari, who also happens to be a friend of Moraa.
Moraa was at the Kisii Book Fair to launch her poetry collection, When Love Says Goodbye, published by Mvua Press an imprint of eKitabu.
"Moraa was happy for me and encouraged me to write more," added Kerubo.
And what would she like to be in the future?
"A lecturer," she added.
Join us in congratulating her for this noble achievement.
Nyasaina's Sad Moments is published by Bleeding Ink Scribes Publishing Ltd.
