Episode 2: The Bride Who Sold Everything
The doctor's words echoed endlessly in Ngozi's mind.
"You have forty-eight hours."
"If the surgery is delayed..."
"...he may not survive."
Her legs became weak.
She slowly sat on the hospital corridor floor.
The wedding she had dreamed about since childhood...
The wedding both families had spent months planning...
Now stood on one side.
Emeka's life...
On the other.
---
Inside the intensive care unit...
Emeka lay unconscious.
Machines beeped steadily.
His breathing was supported by oxygen.
Ngozi stood quietly outside the glass window.
She gently placed her hand against it.
Tears streamed down her face.
"I promised to spend the rest of my life with you."
"I'm not going to lose you now."
---
Sandra walked over and wrapped an arm around her.
"I'm so sorry."
Ngozi nodded weakly.
"I don't care about the wedding anymore."
"I just want him to live."
Sandra looked at her carefully.
"You can't possibly raise that kind of money in two days."
Ngozi wiped away her tears.
"I'll find a way."
---
That evening...
Ngozi returned to her small boutique.
She looked around silently.
Every sewing machine.
Every fabric roll.
Every mannequin.
She remembered how hard she had worked to build the business after her parents died.
Without hesitation...
She picked up her phone.
"I want to sell everything."
The buyer arrived within an hour.
By sunset...
The boutique was empty.
---
But it still wasn't enough.
The following morning...
Ngozi opened the small wooden box her late mother had left her.
Inside were family heirlooms.
Gold earrings.
Necklaces.
Bracelets.
And the engagement jewelry she planned to wear on her wedding day.
She kissed the box gently.
"Mama..."
"I know you'll understand."
She sold them all.
Still...
The money fell short.
---
As she sat outside the hospital in despair...
An elderly family friend approached her.
"My daughter..."
"I heard what happened."
He handed her an envelope.
Inside...
Were the property documents to the small house her parents had left her.
"You once told me you would never sell this house."
Ngozi looked at the papers.
That house held every memory of her childhood.
Every memory of her parents.
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered,
"A house can be rebuilt."
"A life cannot."
---
By evening...
The house had been sold.
Ngozi carried a black bag filled with bank drafts into the hospital.
She placed everything on the doctor's desk.
Her hands trembled.
"This..."
"...is every kobo I have."
The doctor counted the payments.
Then looked at her in disbelief.
"You sold everything?"
Ngozi smiled through her tears.
"What good is a wedding..."
"...if the groom isn't alive to stand at the altar?"
The doctor slowly nodded.
"I'll prepare the surgical team immediately."
---
As Ngozi sat outside the operating theatre praying...
Sandra quietly stepped outside to answer a phone call.
Her voice suddenly changed.
Cold.
Calculated.
"It's done."
"She has spent everything."
"Exactly as we planned."
A deep male voice answered from the other end.
"Good."
"Now the second phase can begin."
Sandra smiled.
"She'll never see it coming."
She ended the call...
Then wiped away fake tears before walking back inside.
"My friend..."
"I'm here for you."
Ngozi embraced her tightly.
Completely unaware...
That the person comforting her...
Was already helping to destroy her future.
