Chapter Twenty-Six

The Man Who Followed Her

Amelia couldn’t move.

Neither could Ethan.

They stood on opposite sides of the hotel lobby, staring at each other.

For the first time since she had met him, Amelia didn’t see the man who used to wait outside the hospital for her.

She saw a man carrying secrets.

Ethan slowly walked toward her.

“Amelia.”

She didn’t answer.

“Why are you here?”

She almost laughed.

“That’s your question?”

He stopped a few feet away.

“I was looking for you.”

“You followed me?”

“No.”

“Then how did you know I was here?”

“I didn’t.”

Amelia stared at him.

“You’re lying.”

Ethan’s expression tightened.

“Who told you to come here?”

“Why does that matter?”

“Because this place isn’t safe.”

She looked around.

“Safe from what?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

“From Adrian?”

His face changed.

Amelia saw it.

That tiny reaction she had been waiting for.

“You know him,” she whispered.

Ethan looked away.

“I knew of him.”

“No. You knew him.”

“Amelia—”

“You were here that night.”

He froze.

“Three years ago.”

Silence.

“You were at the Rosewood Hotel.”

Ethan’s eyes returned to hers.

“Who told you that?”

“So you were.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You didn’t have to.”

He sighed.

“Amelia, there are things you don’t understand.”

“Then explain them.”

“I can’t.”

She shook her head.

“Of course.”

She turned away.

Ethan caught her arm gently.

“Wait.”

Amelia immediately pulled away.

“Don’t.”

He released her.

His face fell.

“I would never hurt you.”

“You keep saying that while hiding things from me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

He looked toward the reception desk.

“Not here.”

Amelia followed his gaze.

The receptionist had disappeared.

Her heart began beating faster.

“What happened here?”

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Adrian found something.”

“What?”

“I don’t know everything.”

“But you know something.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

Ethan hesitated.

“Something connected to your family.”

Amelia stared at him.

“What did Adrian find?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why did you meet him?”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“You’ve been talking to Victoria.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“She told you about that night?”

“Part of it.”

He looked away.

“Of course she did.”

“What does that mean?”

“Victoria doesn’t know the whole story.”

“Neither do you?”

“I know enough.”

“Then tell me.”

Ethan looked directly at her.

“Adrian was trying to get information from someone close to your family.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s the truth.”

Amelia shook her head.

“You’re not telling me everything.”

“No.”

The honesty surprised her.

Ethan continued.

“I’m not.”

“Why?”

“Because I promised someone I wouldn’t.”

Amelia’s heart stopped.

“Who?”

He didn’t answer.

“Who did you promise?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Your father.”

Amelia felt the world go silent.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“What did he ask you to promise?”

Ethan took a breath.

“That I would keep you away from the investigation.”

Amelia’s face went pale.

“Why?”

“I was told it was for your safety.”

“And you believed him?”

“At the time.”

“At the time?”

Ethan nodded.

“I didn’t understand everything either.”

Amelia looked away.

Three years.

Three years of believing she had sacrificed her career for love.

Three years of believing Ethan had simply wanted more of her time.

But now she was beginning to understand that something much larger had been happening behind the scenes.

“What about Victoria?”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What about her?”

“She worked with you.”

“I never asked her to betray you.”

“But she did.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Amelia stared at him.

“Did you love her?”

Ethan looked shocked.

“What?”

“Did you ever have feelings for Victoria?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

But Amelia didn’t know whether to believe it.

She turned away.

Then her phone vibrated.

She looked down.

Another message from the unknown number.

Unknown: Ask Ethan what happened after Adrian left the hotel.

Amelia’s eyes lifted.

“What happened after Adrian left?”

Ethan went silent.

“Ethan.”

He looked at her.

“You need to leave.”

“No.”

“Amelia, please.”

“What happened?”

“I can’t tell you here.”

“Then tell me somewhere else.”

He shook his head.

“Not tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because someone is watching us.”

Amelia’s blood ran cold.

She looked around the lobby.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then how do you know?”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Because I saw them outside.”

Amelia turned toward the glass doors.

A dark car was parked across the street.

Its windows were tinted.

She couldn’t see inside.

“Who is it?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked at Ethan.

For once, he seemed genuinely afraid.

Then the car started moving.

It drove away.

Amelia turned back.

“Where are you going?”

Ethan was already walking toward the exit.

“Home.”

“That’s it?”

“I’ll explain everything.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

“You’ve been saying that for three years.”

He stopped.

Those words clearly hurt him.

But Amelia didn’t take them back.

Ethan looked at her for a long moment.

Then he said quietly,

“Maybe you should ask your father what happened that night.”

And he walked away.

⸻

Amelia remained in the hotel lobby.

She couldn’t breathe properly.

Her father.

Ethan.

Victoria.

Adrian.

The Rosewood Hotel.

Everything was connected.

But there was still one missing piece.

She opened Adrian’s notebook again.

She flipped through the pages.

Then something fell out.

A small folded piece of paper.

Amelia picked it up.

She unfolded it.

There were only three words written on it.

Ask about Helena.

Amelia frowned.

Helena.

Who was Helena?

She stared at the name.

Then her phone vibrated.

This time, it wasn’t the unknown number.

It was her father.

Dad: Come home immediately.

A second message followed.

Dad: There are things I need to tell you.

Amelia looked at the paper again.

Ask about Helena.

For the first time, she wondered whether Helena was the person who could finally connect every piece of the mystery.

And somewhere deep inside her, Amelia knew one thing.

Whatever her father was about to tell her…

it would change everything.

Chapter Twenty-Five

The Person Behind the Curtain

Amelia didn’t sleep.

The warning from the unknown number kept circling through her mind.

Don’t trust your father either.

She hated that sentence.

Not because she thought it was impossible.

But because some part of her had already begun to wonder the same thing.

She looked at Adrian’s notebook on the table.

There were still so many unanswered questions.

Who had been manipulating her?

Why had Adrian been investigating her family?

Why had Ethan lied about knowing him?

And most importantly—

Why had someone wanted Amelia away from the hospital?

At six in the morning, Amelia finally made a decision.

She was going to speak to her father again.

But this time, she wouldn’t ask him what he wanted her to know.

She would ask him what he was afraid she’d discover.

⸻

Gabriel Hart was in his study when Amelia arrived.

He looked up from his desk.

“You’re early.”

“I couldn’t sleep.”

He immediately noticed the notebook in her hand.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get that?”

“Victoria.”

He stood.

“Amelia, give it to me.”

She held it against her chest.

“No.”

“That’s not something you should have.”

“Why?”

“Because you don’t understand what it contains.”

“Then explain it.”

He walked toward her.

“I told you to stay away from Adrian.”

“You told me not to meet him alone.”

“Because he’s dangerous.”

“Is he?”

“Yes.”

“Then why was he investigating my family?”

Gabriel stopped.

Amelia watched him closely.

“Why?”

“Because he didn’t trust us.”

“Did you?”

Her father’s silence answered more than words could.

Amelia’s voice softened.

“Dad, what happened three years ago?”

He looked away.

“You’re asking questions that could put you in danger.”

“I’m already in danger if everyone keeps lying to me.”

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“Everyone says that.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“Victoria said she was protecting me.”

“Victoria?”

“Ethan said he wanted what was best for me.”

Her father’s face tightened.

“And now you’re telling me you’re protecting me.”

Amelia shook her head.

“I don’t know who to believe anymore.”

Gabriel sat down.

For the first time, Amelia saw something in his face that frightened her.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Your grandfather built this family on secrets,” he said quietly.

Amelia sat opposite him.

“What kind of secrets?”

“Financial ones. Business ones. Personal ones.”

“Were they illegal?”

Gabriel didn’t answer immediately.

“Not everything hidden is illegal.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

Amelia leaned forward.

“Then what was Adrian investigating?”

“He believed money had been moved through medical organisations connected to our family.”

“Was it?”

“Yes.”

Her heart dropped.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I know what the records showed. I don’t know why they existed.”

“Then why did you tell the hospital to keep me away?”

“I didn’t.”

“You knew someone contacted them.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Gabriel’s eyes hardened.

“I told you. I don’t know.”

Amelia stared at him.

Then she remembered something.

The letter.

The name.

The message.

She pulled the document from her bag.

“You signed this.”

Gabriel looked at it.

“I didn’t.”

“There is a signature.”

“That’s not mine.”

Amelia looked closer.

She had assumed the signature belonged to him.

But now that she was looking carefully, something seemed wrong.

The handwriting was similar.

But not identical.

Her father’s eyes narrowed.

“This was forged.”

Amelia looked up.

“Then who forged it?”

Gabriel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Her phone vibrated.

Both of them looked at it.

A message from the unknown number.

Unknown: Ask him about the Rosewood Hotel.

Amelia’s stomach tightened.

She looked at her father.

“Rosewood Hotel.”

Gabriel went completely still.

That reaction was different from anything she had seen before.

“Why are you asking me about that?”

“Because someone keeps telling me to.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Amelia, listen to me.”

His voice was suddenly urgent.

“Do not go there.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s where everything started.”

She froze.

“What started?”

Gabriel stood.

“The part of your life I was trying to keep away from you.”

“What happened there?”

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.”

“I can’t tell you.”

Amelia shook her head.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.”

She picked up her bag.

“I’m going.”

“Amelia!”

She stopped at the door.

“Where?”

“Rosewood.”

Her father looked genuinely frightened.

“Don’t go there alone.”

Amelia turned.

“Why?”

“Because if the person behind all this knows you’re looking…”

He stopped.

“What?”

“They’ll know you’re getting close.”

⸻

Two hours later, Amelia stood outside the Rosewood Hotel.

She stared at the entrance.

Three years ago, Ethan had told her he had attended business meetings there.

The unknown woman had told her to ask him about it.

Adrian had written about it.

Her father was afraid of it.

And now she was standing outside the place where all the secrets seemed to meet.

She walked inside.

The lobby was elegant and quiet.

She approached the reception desk.

“Excuse me.”

“Yes?”

“I need information about a guest from three years ago.”

The receptionist shook her head.

“We can’t release guest information.”

“I understand.”

Amelia placed a photograph on the counter.

It was the old charity photograph.

Victoria.

Adrian.

The mysterious man.

The receptionist looked at it.

Her expression changed.

She looked back at Amelia.

“Where did you get this?”

Amelia noticed.

“You recognize them.”

The woman hesitated.

“I recognize one person.”

“Who?”

She pointed at the man in the background.

“That man.”

Amelia’s heart began racing.

“Who is he?”

The receptionist looked around.

Then lowered her voice.

“He wasn’t a guest.”

“Then why was he here?”

“I don’t know.”

“Please.”

The receptionist hesitated again.

Then whispered,

“He used to come here with a woman.”

Amelia’s breath caught.

“Which woman?”

The receptionist looked at the photograph.

“Her.”

She pointed directly at Victoria.

Amelia felt the room tilt.

Victoria had told her she had never been to the Rosewood Hotel.

But the receptionist remembered her.

And apparently, she hadn’t been alone.

“Do you remember the man’s name?”

The receptionist shook her head.

“No.”

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“He came here the night of the charity event.”

Amelia’s heart pounded.

“The same night Adrian disappeared?”

The receptionist nodded.

“He wasn’t alone.”

“Who was with him?”

She hesitated.

Then said,

“Ethan Hayes.”

Amelia stopped breathing.

For three years, Ethan had told her he barely knew Adrian.

For three years, he had hidden the truth.

And now, finally, Amelia had proof that Ethan had been there that night.

But before she could ask another question, her phone rang.

Victoria.

Amelia stared at the screen.

She answered.

“Hello?”

Victoria’s voice trembled.

“Amelia…”

“What?”

“Where are you?”

“Why?”

“Because I know where you are.”

Amelia’s blood ran cold.

“How?”

Victoria’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“Because you’re standing in the exact place where Adrian disappeared.”

Amelia looked around the hotel lobby.

Then Victoria said something that made her heart stop.

“And Amelia…”

“What?”

“Ethan is already there.”

Amelia slowly turned toward the entrance.

A familiar figure had just walked through the doors.

Ethan.

Their eyes met.

He stopped.

So did she.

And for the first time, neither of them pretended not to know what the other had been hiding.

Chapter Twenty-Four

The Part Victoria Didn’t Tell Her

Amelia couldn’t move.

She stood in Victoria’s living room, staring at her best friend.

“Your father?” she repeated.

Victoria nodded slowly.

“He told me to keep you away from the hospital.”

Amelia’s mind struggled to process it.

“My father told you?”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan asked you to help him convince me to leave?”

Victoria looked down.

“Yes.”

“So both of you were working on the same thing?”

“It wasn’t supposed to hurt you.”

Amelia let out a quiet, disbelieving laugh.

“You helped me give up my career.”

“I know.”

“You watched me walk away from something I’d worked for my entire life.”

“I know.”

“And you said nothing.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“Of what would happen if I told you.”

“To me?”

Victoria nodded.

Amelia stared at her.

“Then tell me now.”

Victoria wiped her eyes.

“I can’t.”

Amelia’s expression hardened.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because there are things I promised I would never reveal.”

“Who did you promise?”

Victoria remained silent.

“Adrian?”

“No.”

“Ethan?”

Victoria shook her head.

“My father?”

Again, silence.

Amelia stepped closer.

“Who, Victoria?”

Victoria finally whispered,

“Someone your father works with.”

Amelia’s heart sank.

“Who?”

“I don’t know his full name.”

“But you’ve met him.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“Where?”

“At the charity event.”

The photograph immediately came to Amelia’s mind.

The silver watch.

The hidden man.

Victoria standing beside Adrian.

“So you knew that man.”

Victoria looked away.

“Yes.”

“Who was he?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“You’ve lied to me too many times for me to believe that.”

Victoria flinched.

Amelia picked up her handbag.

“I’m leaving.”

“Amelia, please.”

She stopped at the door.

“What?”

Victoria’s voice trembled.

“There’s something else.”

Amelia turned around.

Victoria reached into a drawer and pulled out a small black notebook.

She held it out.

“This belonged to Adrian.”

Amelia stared at it.

“Why do you have it?”

“I found it after he disappeared.”

“Why didn’t you give it to me?”

“Because I was told not to.”

“By whom?”

Victoria didn’t answer.

Amelia took the notebook.

“I’m taking this.”

Victoria nodded.

“There’s something you should know.”

“What?”

“Adrian wasn’t investigating your family because he wanted to expose them.”

Amelia frowned.

“Then why?”

“He thought someone inside your family was being deceived too.”

Amelia’s eyes widened.

“Who?”

Victoria looked at her.

“You.”

⸻

Amelia drove home with the notebook on the passenger seat.

She didn’t open it immediately.

She needed to breathe.

Everything she had believed about her life seemed to be changing.

Her father had secrets.

Ethan had secrets.

Victoria had secrets.

And Adrian had apparently been trying to protect her from something.

But there was one thing Amelia couldn’t understand.

Why had someone gone to such lengths to make her leave the hospital?

What could she possibly have discovered there?

She parked outside her house.

Before she could get out, her phone rang.

Ethan.

She stared at his name.

Then answered.

“Hello?”

“Where are you?”

“Out.”

“Where?”

“Why?”

“I’ve been trying to reach you.”

“I was busy.”

There was a pause.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t sound okay.”

Amelia looked at Adrian’s notebook.

“Ethan?”

“Yes?”

“Do you remember Adrian?”

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Ethan said,

“Why are you asking me that?”

Amelia’s heart tightened.

“Just answer.”

“I told you. I don’t know him.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Another silence.

Then he said,

“I have to go.”

The call ended.

Amelia stared at the screen.

He had hung up.

She slowly whispered,

“You do know him.”

⸻

Inside the house, Amelia sat at the dining table.

She placed Adrian’s notebook in front of her.

The cover was old and worn.

There was no name on it.

She opened the first page.

Most of it contained medical notes.

Patient numbers.

Dates.

Names.

Observations.

Amelia turned another page.

Then another.

Nothing.

Until she reached a page near the middle.

There was one sentence written in Adrian’s handwriting.

If anything happens to me, find the woman who knows about the Rosewood Hotel.

Amelia’s heart stopped.

The Rosewood Hotel.

The same place mentioned by the unknown woman.

She turned the page.

There was a name.

But it had been scratched out.

Only a few letters remained.

V…

Amelia stared at it.

Victoria?

Could it be?

She turned another page.

This time, there was a date.

Three years ago.

The day before Amelia resigned.

Underneath it, Adrian had written:

She thinks she’s choosing love. She doesn’t know someone else is choosing for her.

Amelia’s eyes filled with tears.

She remembered that week.

Ethan telling her he needed her.

Victoria telling her relationships required sacrifice.

Her father warning her about people.

And then—

She had resigned.

Amelia closed the notebook.

Her hands were trembling.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated.

The unknown number.

Unknown: You found Adrian’s notebook.

Amelia stared at the screen.

She typed:

Who are you?

The reply came.

Unknown: Someone Adrian trusted.

Amelia’s heart raced.

She typed again.

Was it Victoria?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally:

Unknown: No.

Amelia swallowed.

Another message came.

Unknown: Victoria knows part of the story.

Then:

Unknown: Ethan knows another part.

And finally:

Unknown: But the person who started it all is much closer to you than you think.

Amelia looked around the quiet room.

Her father.

Victoria.

Ethan.

Adrian.

The unknown woman.

Too many secrets.

Too many lies.

And somewhere in the middle of them was the real reason she had been pushed away from the hospital.

Her phone vibrated once more.

This time, the message was only six words.

Unknown: Don’t trust your father either.

Amelia’s heart sank.

Because she had spent years believing that no matter how complicated the world became, her father would always be the one person she could trust.

Now even that certainty was disappearing.

And for the first time, Amelia wondered whether the truth she was searching for would hurt more than the betrayal she was already beginning to uncover.

Chapter Twenty-Three

The Call

Amelia couldn’t stop staring at the message.

He was made to disappear.

Those words refused to leave her mind.

She read them again.

Then again.

And Ethan knows why.

Her heart was pounding so hard that she could hear it.

She wanted to confront Ethan immediately.

She wanted to walk into his room, wake him up, and demand every answer he had been hiding.

But something stopped her.

For the first time, Amelia understood that anger could make her careless.

If Ethan truly knew something about Adrian, confronting him without knowing what she was dealing with could make him hide even more.

So she stayed quiet.

She locked her phone and placed it beneath her pillow.

Tonight, she would wait.

Tomorrow, she would start looking for answers.

⸻

The next morning, Ethan behaved as though nothing had happened.

He sat at the breakfast table, scrolling through his phone.

“Good morning,” he said.

“Morning.”

“You slept?”

“A little.”

He looked at her.

“You seem better.”

“Maybe I am.”

He smiled.

“That’s good.”

Amelia poured herself some tea.

She watched him from across the table.

Every movement.

Every expression.

Every time his phone lit up.

She wasn’t trying to catch him anymore.

She was trying to understand him.

And that was somehow worse.

Because the man sitting across from her looked exactly like the man she had fallen in love with.

The same smile.

The same voice.

The same familiar eyes.

How could someone she loved so deeply be connected to so many unanswered questions?

His phone vibrated.

Ethan glanced at it.

Then immediately turned the screen down.

Amelia noticed.

“Work?”

“Yes.”

“Important?”

“Nothing serious.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

He looked surprised.

“You’re not going to ask?”

“Should I?”

“No.”

He picked up his phone and stood.

“I’ll see you later.”

“Where are you going?”

“Hospital.”

Amelia looked at him.

“You have a meeting?”

“Yes.”

“What hospital?”

He paused.

“St. Vincent’s.”

Her heart skipped.

“St. Vincent’s?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Meeting.”

He walked away.

Amelia remained seated.

Of all the hospitals in the city…

St. Vincent’s.

The same hospital where Adrian had worked.

She waited until Ethan left.

Then she called Dr. Naomi Carter.

Naomi answered after several rings.

“Hello?”

“Dr. Carter, it’s Amelia.”

There was silence.

“Yes?”

“Ethan just told me he’s going to St. Vincent’s.”

Naomi’s voice changed.

“He is?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said he has a meeting.”

Naomi was quiet again.

Then she said,

“Amelia, don’t come here.”

“Why?”

“I mean it.”

“Does he know Adrian?”

“I told you I can’t discuss everything.”

“But you know something.”

“I know enough to tell you to be careful.”

Amelia’s stomach tightened.

“Is Ethan there now?”

“I don’t know.”

“Please.”

Naomi sighed.

“Give me an hour.”

“Why?”

“I’ll call you back.”

The line went dead.

⸻

An hour later, Amelia’s phone rang.

It wasn’t Naomi.

It was Victoria.

Amelia stared at the screen.

She almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

“What?”

Victoria was silent for a moment.

“Amelia…”

“What do you want?”

“I need to see you.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Please.”

“No.”

“There’s something I need to tell you.”

“You’ve been saying that.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me now.”

Victoria breathed deeply.

“I know what happened to Adrian.”

Amelia sat upright.

“What?”

“I know why he disappeared.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m at home.”

“Don’t move.”

“What?”

“I’m coming.”

⸻

Twenty minutes later, Amelia arrived at Victoria’s house.

Victoria opened the door almost immediately.

She looked nervous.

More nervous than Amelia had ever seen her.

“Come in.”

Amelia stepped inside.

Victoria locked the door behind her.

“Why did you say you know what happened to Adrian?”

“Because I do.”

“Then tell me.”

Victoria looked at her.

“You remember the night of the charity event?”

“Yes.”

“You weren’t there.”

“I know.”

“Adrian was.”

“And Ethan?”

Victoria hesitated.

“Yes.”

Amelia’s heart dropped.

“You said Ethan wasn’t there.”

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of Ethan?”

Victoria looked away.

“Not just Ethan.”

“Who else?”

Victoria didn’t answer.

Amelia stepped closer.

“What happened that night?”

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Adrian found something.”

“What?”

“I don’t know everything.”

“Victoria!”

“I swear!”

She wiped her eyes.

“He found documents.”

“What documents?”

“Documents connected to your family.”

Amelia froze.

“My family?”

Victoria nodded.

“Adrian believed your family’s money wasn’t coming from the sources everyone was told.”

Amelia stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

“I don’t know.”

“You just said he found documents.”

“I saw some of them.”

“What did they say?”

Victoria shook her head.

“I don’t remember everything.”

“Then remember.”

Victoria looked terrified.

“They mentioned your grandfather.”

Amelia’s breathing slowed.

“What about him?”

“There was money moving through medical organisations.”

“What?”

“I don’t know why.”

“Where did Adrian get these documents?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who was he going to tell?”

Victoria’s lips trembled.

“You.”

Amelia went completely still.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he?”

Victoria looked down.

“Because someone stopped him.”

“Who?”

Victoria didn’t answer.

Amelia’s voice became barely a whisper.

“Who stopped him?”

Victoria looked at her.

Then she said the words Amelia had been dreading.

“Ethan was there.”

Amelia’s heart shattered.

“What did he do?”

Victoria immediately shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“You were there!”

“I left before everything happened.”

“You said you knew!”

“I know what happened before he disappeared. I don’t know what happened after.”

Amelia stared at her.

“What happened before?”

Victoria swallowed.

“Adrian told Ethan he was going to tell you everything.”

“And Ethan?”

“He begged him not to.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Victoria.”

“I don’t know!”

Silence filled the room.

Then Amelia asked the question she had been avoiding.

“Why were you involved?”

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Ethan asked me to help.”

Amelia felt like the floor had disappeared beneath her.

“Help him do what?”

Victoria couldn’t look at her.

“To convince you to leave the hospital.”

Amelia closed her eyes.

Everything suddenly became clear.

The pressure.

The emotional conversations.

Victoria’s strange advice.

The visit to the hospital.

Ethan’s insistence that she needed more time for their relationship.

Her resignation.

It hadn’t been one person’s idea.

They had worked together.

But there was still one question.

“Why?”

Victoria looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

Amelia shook her head.

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

“You know why.”

Victoria’s voice broke.

“I was told it was for your protection.”

“By who?”

Victoria didn’t answer.

“Who told you?”

Victoria looked toward the window.

Then back at Amelia.

“Your father.”

Amelia froze.

“My father?”

Victoria nodded.

“He told me to keep you away from the hospital.”

The room became silent.

Amelia’s mind raced.

Her father.

Ethan.

Victoria.

Adrian.

The hospital.

All connected.

But there was still something missing.

Something enormous.

Amelia reached for her phone.

Before she could say anything, it vibrated.

One new message.

Unknown: Now you know why Adrian disappeared.

Amelia stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

Unknown: But Victoria still hasn’t told you what Ethan did after Adrian left.

Amelia slowly looked at Victoria.

Victoria’s face had gone pale.

Because whatever happened next…

Victoria knew about it.

And she had just realised Amelia was finally close enough to uncover everything.

Chapter Twenty-Two

The Night Adrian Disappeared

“Where were you three years ago… the night Adrian disappeared?”

The question hung between them.

Ethan didn’t answer.

Amelia watched him carefully.

His lips parted, but no words came out.

“Ethan?”

He finally looked away.

“I don’t remember.”

Amelia’s heart sank.

“You don’t remember?”

“It was three years ago.”

“You remembered everything else when I asked.”

“I don’t know what you want me to say.”

“The truth.”

He looked back at her.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Amelia took a step closer.

“Then why did you look scared?”

“I didn’t.”

“You did.”

“Amelia, you’re turning everything into something it’s not.”

She almost smiled.

That sentence.

He had used it so many times.

Whenever she questioned him.

Whenever something didn’t make sense.

Whenever she got too close.

But this time, she didn’t back down.

“Did you know Adrian?”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“No.”

“My father knows him.”

“I don’t know anything about that.”

“Victoria knows him.”

“I don’t care about Victoria.”

“You should.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because three years ago, she met Adrian at my hospital.”

His expression changed.

Just for a second.

But Amelia saw it.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“You knew about the meeting.”

“I said I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Amelia’s voice became quieter.

“You’re lying to me.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Why are you doing this?”

“Doing what?”

“Digging into things that happened years ago.”

“Because someone keeps telling me there’s something I don’t know.”

“Who?”

Amelia froze.

She hadn’t told him about the unknown messages.

Not this time.

She studied his face.

“Why does that matter?”

“Because whoever is putting these ideas in your head doesn’t care about us.”

“Maybe they care about the truth.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You’re letting strangers destroy what we have.”

Amelia looked at him.

“What we have?”

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“I gave up my career for what we had.”

“And I never asked you to.”

The words hit her harder than she expected.

She stared at him.

“You didn’t?”

“No.”

“You told me you needed me.”

“I needed my girlfriend.”

“You told me you felt like I cared more about medicine than you.”

“I was expressing how I felt.”

“You kept telling me we couldn’t have a proper relationship if I was always at the hospital.”

“I never forced you to resign.”

“No.”

Her voice broke slightly.

“You didn’t force me.”

She looked away.

“You just made staying feel like choosing against you.”

Ethan went silent.

For once, he had no answer.

⸻

That night, Amelia couldn’t sleep.

She sat at the edge of her bed with her laptop open.

She searched for everything she could find about Adrian.

Old hospital records.

Medical conferences.

Professional directories.

Nothing.

Then she remembered something.

The photograph.

The old charity event.

Victoria.

Adrian.

And the mysterious man with the silver watch.

Amelia opened her phone and searched through her old photographs.

There it was.

Three years ago.

A charity gala.

She zoomed in.

Victoria stood beside Adrian.

And behind them, partially reflected in a glass panel, was another man.

Silver watch.

Dark suit.

But his face was almost completely hidden.

Amelia stared at the photograph.

Then she noticed something else.

A date.

The event had taken place the night Adrian disappeared.

Her heart began racing.

She zoomed in further.

There was something in the man’s hand.

A phone.

And beside him stood someone else.

A woman.

Amelia couldn’t make out her face.

But she recognized the dress.

She had seen it before.

At her own anniversary dinner.

Victoria had worn the same dress.

Amelia’s breath caught.

“No…”

She immediately opened her messages with Victoria.

She searched the date.

There was a message.

Victoria: I’m sorry, I can’t make it tonight. Something came up.

Amelia stared at the screen.

Victoria had told her she couldn’t attend the charity event because she was sick.

But the photograph proved she had been there.

Why had Victoria lied?

⸻

A knock came at the door.

Amelia quickly closed the laptop.

“Who is it?”

“It’s me.”

Ethan.

She waited a moment before opening the door.

He stood there holding a glass of water.

“You’re still awake.”

“So are you.”

“I wanted to check on you.”

She took the glass.

“Thank you.”

He didn’t leave.

Instead, he stood in the doorway.

“Are we okay?”

Amelia looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

His expression fell.

“I love you.”

She closed her eyes.

Once, those words would have been enough.

Tonight, they weren’t.

“I know.”

“I don’t want to lose you.”

She looked at him.

“Then stop giving me reasons to doubt you.”

He said nothing.

After a moment, he walked away.

Amelia watched him disappear down the hallway.

Then she looked at her phone.

A new message had arrived.

Unknown: You found the photograph.

Amelia’s blood ran cold.

She typed:

Who are you?

The message showed as delivered.

No reply.

She waited.

Nothing.

Then her phone vibrated.

Unknown: Someone who knows what happened that night.

Amelia’s heart pounded.

She typed again.

What happened to Adrian?

This time, the response came quickly.

Unknown: He didn’t disappear.

Amelia stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

Unknown: He was made to disappear.

Her hands went cold.

Then one final message.

Unknown: And Ethan knows why.

Amelia slowly looked toward the hallway.

Ethan was gone.

But suddenly, she wasn’t afraid of what she might discover.

She was afraid of how much of her life had already been built around a lie.

And somewhere, three years after Adrian vanished, someone was finally ready to tell her what happened.
