_The Akpan Ohafia: Guardians of Community Justice_ OZUMOZUMO
In the heart of Ohafia, a unique community policing system thrives, where the Akpan enforces decisions and maintains order. Comprising members from each compound, the Akpan investigates, arraigns, and adjudicates civil and criminal matters, ensuring compliance with council decisions.
When a defaulter is identified, the Akpan marches to their home in single file, demanding payment of the "Imanzu" fee. Non-compliance is rare, but when it occurs, the Akpan leaves their "Nkwa Akpan" drum at the entrance, signaling dire consequences. Collective punishment may follow, and property seizure can mount pressure on the defaulter.
Interestingly, Ebem community stands out as the only one without an Akpan, due to its founder's history and unique circumstances.
The Akpan commands respect and awe, their drumming and single-file marches striking fear into hearts. Even in death, the Akpan plays a role in burial rites, with the "Ekpe Akpan" masquerade appearing in a chilling display of ancestral presence.
Leadership of the Akpan rotates among select compounds, known as "Otusi", ensuring a balance of power and upholding community traditions.
