Billy Joel has just given us an update on his health, and it’s got everyone wondering about his future in music. Will the iconic Piano Man ever hit the stage again, or is he facing a longer hiatus from performing?
At 77, this legendary musician has shared that he’s currently unable to drive and is uncertain about when he might return to performing after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus in 2025, a condition that leads to an abnormal buildup of fluid in the brain.
In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, published on October 15, 2026, Joel mentioned that he needs to undergo more medical tests before his doctors can give him the green light to perform again.
His neurologist has cautioned him about the potential risks of live performances, explaining that the loud noises, bright lights, stress, and energy of a show could exacerbate his symptoms. Joel likened the experience of performing to dealing with a concussion.
He first opened up about his diagnosis back in May 2025, after facing issues with his balance, hearing, and vision. Following that, he made the tough decision to cancel his upcoming concerts to prioritize his health and recovery.
Recently, Joel shared that he had surgery to have a shunt placed to help drain the excess fluid. He’s noticed some improvements in his memory, balance, and overall functioning since the procedure, although a few symptoms still linger.
Even with the uncertainty about his future on stage, Joel has expressed a strong desire to return if his health permits. For now, he’s focusing on further testing before making any decisions.
In the meantime, he’s also getting ready to auction off over 70 motorcycles from his personal collection, acknowledging that he can no longer ride like he used to.
So, the big question remains: will one of music’s most beloved performers find his way back to the stage?
