Senator Buhari Announces 2027 Oyo Governorship Bid

Senator AbdulFatai Buhari, the three-term lawmaker representing Oyo North and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Land Transport, has officially thrown his hat in the ring for the 2027 Oyo State governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking in Ibadan on Saturday, the senator revealed he will not seek a fourth term in the Senate, choosing instead to channel his energy into the governorship race an ambition he described as one guided by faith, not desperation.

Buhari appealed to Oyo State residents to prioritize competence, proven records, and delivery capacity over zoning or sectional sentiments, saying:

“I have said it that I’m no longer interested in the Senate seat again because I also want to take a shot at the governorship. I am not desperate; I leave it to God, and I am looking unto God to do it for me.

“I want the people of Oyo State to look beyond where a candidate comes from and focus on performance, competence, experience, and the ability to take our state to greater heights.”

Colonel Pascal Tigri, leader of the Benin Republic mutineers on the run, Interior Minister says coup aborted

The latest report from the Benin Republic said Colonel Pascal Tigri, the leader of the mutineers who seized the country's National TV on Sunday, is on the run.
However, some other members of the group have been arrested as the defence and security forces in the country thwarted the attempted putsch.
Benin's interior minister, Alassane Seidou has appeared on national TV to announce that the coup has been thwarted.
"Early on Sunday morning, 7 December 2025, a small group of soldiers launched a mutiny aimed at destabilising the state and its institutions.

"Faced with this situation, the Beninese armed forces and their leadership, true to their oath, remained committed to the republic. Their response allowed them to retain control of the situation and foil the attempt.

"The government therefore urges the population to go about their activities as normal'.

Nigeria withdraws fighter aircraft as situation stabilises in Benin Republic

By: Zagazola Makama

Nigeria has withdrawn the fighter aircraft earlier deployed to the Benin Republic after authorities assessed that the security situation in the neighbouring country had stabilised following Sunday’s attempted military coup.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the aircraft, which were deployed from Lagos for surveillance and regional monitoring, were ordered to return to base afternoon after receiving updated intelligence indicating that the situation was brought under control and there was “no immediate threat to Nigeria’s territorial security.”

Zagazola report that a military coup attempt against the democratic government of President Patrice Talon was decisively thwarted on Sunday, with loyalist forces retaking full control of the capital by nightfall. The crisis began when mutineers in military uniforms launched an early hours operation to overthrow the government.

Their initial assault on the presidential residence in Cotonou was repelled. Failing to capture the seat of power, the rebel faction then seized the state-run Office de Radiodiffusion et Télévision du Bénin (ORTB), taking control of the national broadcast signal.

The situation escalated rapidly, but the government’s response was swift. Units of the National Guard and loyal armed forces mobilized, surrounding the television station and isolating the mutineers. By late Sunday, security forces had secured key government installations and were in firm command of the city.

The situation is under control. The National Guard has everything surrounded,” a senior security official stated on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the operation.
According to local media reports, including 24 Hours In Benin, the mutineers remained barricaded inside the television station as of Sunday evening. Authorities confirmed that negotiations were underway to secure their peaceful surrender.

President Patrice Talon, who was reportedly secure at an undisclosed location, has not yet made a public statement.
There were no immediate reports of widespread violence or casualties in the streets of Cotonou, which were described as tense but calm following the initial alarms.

The government is expected to issue a formal statement and provide further details on the incident and the identity of the mutineers in the coming hours

Nigeria deploys fighter aircraft to Benin Republic as coup unfolds

By: Zagazola Makama

The Nigerian military has deployed fighter aircraft to the Benin Republic following Sunday’s military coup that toppled President Patrice Talon, reliable security sources have confirmed.

The aircraft, which took off from Lagos earlier on Sunday, were sighted operating within Beninese airspace as Nigeria intensifies surveillance and monitoring of the rapidly evolving political and security situation in the neighbouring country.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the deployment is part of Nigeria’s precautionary measures to assess regional security implications and protect its national interests amid uncertainty in Cotonou.

“The aircraft have already arrived in Benin Republic. Nigeria is closely monitoring developments and evaluating potential risks,” one senior security official said, noting that the move was not an offensive operation but a strategic response to unfolding events.

The takeover in Benin was led by Lt. Pascal Tigri, who announced the dissolution of state institutions and assumed full military control. The coup adds to the growing list of unconstitutional government changes in West Africa, raising concerns over regional stability.

The coup leaders in Benin, the Military Committee for Rebuilding, issued the following statement: The November 2025 constitution has been suspended, all institutions have been dissolved, political parties' activities have been suspended until further notice· Benin’s land, sea, and air borders are closed until further notice.

Nigeria shares a long and porous border with Benin, making political instability in the country a direct security concern for Abuja.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian government has not issued an official statement, but military sources said surveillance will continue “until the situation becomes clearer.”
