Episode 2∆

🌷One Step Forward 🌷

Finally, the day of the WAEC exam came, the short notes the teachers have been giving to them seemed very useful....atleast to those who studied it while the rest who didn't, payed for expos for the exam. As tempting as that is, Testy made sure to study well mostly because she didn't have money to pay for the expo and she wasn't even willing to ask her parents. From the school's view, Testy was one of the best students and the reason was obvious. Seeing her parents were struggling to provide the money for their fees, repeating a class would be a huge set back for them as they'd pay double of what they would have payed normally if she didn't repeat. So Testy and Eva made sure to make the most of their time at school, that way even if they wouldn't be able to make it to University, they would have fully known and mastered the basic Educational knowledge.
Of course, yes the exams were hard, she had no other choice than to see it through with her brains.

Their school wasn't WAEC approved so they couldn't write their exams there, instead, they had to go to another school which was in partnership with their school and it was a bit far. Those that had money to enter transport or were to lazy to trek entered transport while those who either decided on saving their money rather than using it followed along with those that had either, lost their money or didn't have money for transport such as madam Testy herself.

Sandra: Men..this maths we are writing today I hope God helps us so that the WAEC officers wouldn't invigilate today.

Nancy: why?

Sandra: weeelll those of us that are using expo.....[she ended leaving them to figure out the rest]

Testy: So your praying so God will help you cheat? [She answered softly in an amused manner]

Jeffery: well no and yes at the same time

Testy then turned to him raising an eyebrow as she smirked

"oh really? "

Jeffery: well we are just praying that we pass

Nancy: by cheating? [She replied blankly as she kept her view on the road. Since she was one of the people writing with their brains, she found those doing expo agitating ]

Max: well not everyone is as smart as you guys.

Testy: you can be if you just study like we do

Max: well not everyone has that kind of brain.

Testy just rolled her eyes turning her gaze backwards to check on the other group of people that were gisting at the back. All together there was Nine of them,5 girls and 4 boys, 4 of them which moved ahead with Testy and the remaining 4 which seemed to be more intrigued by the new cartoons that DSTV started showing than the exam ahead of them.

Slowly, the rain started to drizzle

Testy: oh no! [She said looking to the sky]

Those at the back turned their attention to the sky as well as the rain began pouring, First with slow speed, before it began pouring down non-stop.
Almost like they all read each other's mind, they began running towards the road slowly getting soaked. They would take a few breaks under the coverage of a few empty shops even though they were already wet. Eventually, they got to school all soaked, luckily for them all they had in their bags and pockets were their mathset, pen and some their money except a few of them that were using Expos who had their phones on them but thanks to their careful handling, the phone survived.

After a while they finally finished with the exam and began their trek home feeling as chilly as ever.

Max: let's jog home na...heat up our bodies

Some of them agreed while some stayed back including Testy. She preferred doing her walks cause it gave her space to breath and ... think. It made her smile too as she began to think of how close their class seemed to be at these moments and it was pleasurable to be honest, one day they won't see each other again so they might as well make the most of it.
Joking along the way, those that decided to stay back gisted ,cracked jokes and quizzed themselves talking about some of the questions they missed and those they were certain they got.

Before anyone could have time to reason, the exam was over and before they had time flex and relax the results was out. None of Testy's parents could even put to heart that she was growing, all they did was make sure her sister's and her fee was paid and now she had not just finished her final secondary school exam, she was two steps to university. One which was utme and the other post utme, this waec exam was the only thing that could hold her back from moving forward and the thoughts that she would fail taunted her gravely that she found herself tossing and turning almost every night till the results were out, letting her parents down was the last thing on this Earth she would wish to do.

The day the exam was out,Testy was too scared to go to school to get the result and so when Eva went, she brought the result home with her.

*Knock knock*

The sound of the door echoed, suspecting it was Eva, Esther didn't hesitate to open the door.

Eva: I'm home and I've picked up her result from the principal [she said excitedly once her mom opened the door for her]
That evening, the three of them, Testy, Esther and their father James were seated watching the TV. Esther had sold out her moi-moi and so since it was evening already, she didn't bother to make another batch.

Testy: sighhhhhhhh [she exhaled aloud making her worry evudent]

Esther then picked the results from Eva's hand.

Esther: be calm okay? Exams are not the true test of knowledge

James: and if you don't do well we would still be proud of you because we know you studied hard for the exam okay?

Testy then nodded her head squeezing her teeth together tightly as they watched Esther open up the already printed out result. Esther wore a sad look at first obviously mistaken by the immediate glance, but then her face lit up as she turned to the rest of the family.

Esther: 3A's and 6B2's

Eva: Eeeeeeee!! You passed wonderfully [she jumped excitedly]

Testy completely short of words only smiled before closing her eyes as tears of complete joy flowed slowly down her eye lids. The relief that filled her soul could make her sleep 48 hours straight, opening her eyes she turned to her father who was closest to her,she then hugged him tightly, burying her head in his chest as she began sobbing. Esther then smiled walking towards her as she began stroking her head

Esther: see? You did well....as expected

That statement made Testy cry more, she had passed one of the hardest exams she had seen so far with just her brains, she was utterly proud of her self and very grateful to God for giving her such grace to win this. Eva then giggled, clapping multiple times for Her dearest sister.
'one down....two more to go' Testy thought to herself as she prepared her heart for the next stage. 'I wonder what the rest of my squad scored' she continued to herself remembering her study buddies who didn't use expo.

Eva: oh and the principal said your class should come tomorrow for a formal address and stuff. [She chipped in]

'yeah...I'll go so I can see what the others scored' she echoed in her head as she released from the hug wiping her tears.

Episode one∆
🌷Origins 🌷

On and on and on and on the sound of Testimony's alarm went on ringing nonstop. Finally she woke up a bit blurred as still laying down her hand began searching for her phone but seeing she couldn't find it she rose her head up to look for it and put it off. Once she did,she switched it off checking the time on her phone to see what time it was and it was 7am sharp. She then looked to her side to see Eva,her younger sister sleeping so soundly like the sound of the alarm did nothing and that made Testimony smile shaking her head.

Eva somehow looked like a mini version of their mom, same chubby body, same cute caramel skin and same short hair that almost but barely touched their shoulders, even same brownish-black eyes, unlike Testimony, who had a slender figure, same everything but a long hair that passed her shoulders with a few inches, something she got from her father's genes. She was also as calm and introverted as her father, unlike her mom and Eva who was Energetic and somewhat stubborn sometimes.

Testimony: Eva [she whispered nudging her little sis ] wake up it's 7am

Eva: ooooo leave me to sleep don't worry [she involuntarily spoke turning her face the opposite direction from Testimony]

Testimony: you'll be late girl

Eva: Ehnnn I'll just tell them im sick

Testimony: so you'll be lying?.... And you think God will be happy with that? [ Shakes her head in a disappointed manner]

Eva[siigghhhh] only because of God o

She then finally woke up reluctantly getting up from bed as she went straight to brush her teeth. Once Testimony brushed her teeth she went to the kitchen to prepare the normal bread and tea they all ate in the morning for everyone.

Testimony: Mommy sugar is finished [ she said after making the tea for everyone]

Esther: where you able to put sugar for everyone?

Testimony: yhp....but we'll need to buy more for tomorrow [ she looked into her mom's eyes concerned]

Esther: Ehm don't worry about that, I'll take care of it

Testimony then gave off a satisfied smile as she then began giving everyone their tea with
Esther,their mom, rationing the bread.

Eva: where is Daddy [she uttered after sipping her tea]

Esther: yeah,he slept late last night

Eva: why? [She uttered utterly confused]

Their father was a pensioner, he retired when Testimony got to SS2 and ever since then things hasn't been going well for the family....
The government didn't pay the pensioners, how would they? Even normal workers didn't get their pay at the end of the month not to talk of a pensioner...so the thought of him having a reason to sleep late puzzled Eva with the thought of what he could possibly be doing.
Their mother on the other hand sold moi-moi at the front of their rented apartment and she's been trying her best to fend for the family....
She didn't complain that her husband was doing less, she knew if he had he would spend his all on the family...
But since the government have decided not to pay the pensioners, what could they do?
Surprisingly, their parents held onto one thing. Christianity. They believed in God and hard work. And they taught their daughters in the way of the Lord.... which Eva and Testimony followed delegently.

Esther: well he was looking through the newspapers for any available jobs [ she answered honestly but sadly] but .......[she paused knowing fully well they would want to know his progress in his great search] but no...he didn't find any...yet.

The rest of the girls just kept silently as they all ate. When they were done Testimony kept her dad's tea aside on the kitchen table covering the cup with a plate as she tied the bread in it's wrapper. When that was settled and everything was washed,Esther went on to call her husband so they'd do their normal morning prayers.

Eva: good morning sir! [ She replied excitedly as she jumped on the couch with her knee B4 sitting properly ....all done childishly]

Testimony: Daddy good morning

James: Good morning my lovelies [ he replied to their greetings happily but a sign of tiredness was still very evident]
Testimony: I left your tea in the kitchen

James: thank you jarah [he then yawned taking his seat]

After everyone was settled, they started their prayers and as soon as it was all over James headed straight back to bed as Eva and Testimony went on with their preparation for school. When they were done, they wore their bag as they headed straight to their mom's shop to ask if they could get lunch money. Normally, whether or not they get lunch money was dependent on how well their mom sold the day before and to their joy they were lucky today as they watched their mother go through her purse, she handed 100Naira to Eva and 200 Naira to Testimony and that shocked both girls because most times what they got was either 100 naira, 50 naira, moi moi or nothing for lunch but never 110 ,not to speak of 200 naira.

As surprised as they both where Eva was the one to speak
Eva: uhhh 200?

Esther: yh....you guys will use 100 naira to buy sugar for tomorrow.

The awkwardness of what it turned out to be almost made them laugh but they left on anyways. After a while they found themselves at school, after assembly everyone went straight to class.

Miss Naomi: Good morning class, we all know that the waec exam is in two days time I hope you all are reading. So today I'll just be giving a few bullet points for your English first paper unlike doing topic to topic as usual.

Once it was closing period, the other classes were excused to go home except Testimony's class for obvious reasons and so Eva had no other choice than to walk home without her. Finally, by 6 they were done, once the teacher left, the class went to being roudy as everyone began gisting and playing.

Jennifer: yo, Testy[ the nickname they all called Testimony] we are planning on an after party once the exams are over so we'd be contributing 200 each day to fund it. Will you be joining us? I mean we all know your not into going out and all but just this once.....it's your final year in secondary school you know and all teens in their right minds would go.

Her last statement annoyed Testy making her roll her eyes as she wore her bag

Testy: then I guess I'm not in my right mind[She replied angrily walking away from her but stopped halfway] if I were you I'd think of my exam than a dumb party.

Jennifer: [with utter frustration she yawned uttering in a low tone] pastor's daughter.

That made everyone laugh for some reason but instead of reacting rashly she simply spoke peacefully

Testy: life is not all about parties, one day you'll die....are you not worried where you'd end up? [ Not really caring for her response she left hearing low talks and loud laughters]

Her walk home was lonely and that gave her Time to think. Of course she would more than love to go to the party, her life was so boring and heartbreaking. Coming from a poor home there were alot of things she was limited from having and doing, plus, her family's Christian background also hindered alot of things. It was just home, school,church.....the worst life triangle She could think of ,she never got to go out, have fun and just do normal teens stuff, besides even if she was allowed to go,their family had things to do with money than having her waste 200 all day till exam's ending for some party, if you compile the money it would probably end up to a huge sum.

Instead she was stuck with helping her mom with work and helping out at church however she could and trust me, she hated it and yh the Christian thing is fine but why on Earth does it have to be in such a boring manner. She didn't even have one good friend she could vouch for,she couldn't even join those that stuck on the road to play
"JEEZ"she spoke out loud sighing before bending down on the side of the road placing both hands on her eye lids tightly so she won't cry
"I just wish....we were ...richer" she uttered once more as she continued her trek.
She stopped at a shop close to their house to buy the sugar she was given extra money to buy. She then spotted 4 expensive looking guys who purchased donuts from the same shop, they wore good looking identical black shoes, identical blue shirts with yet again identical grey sweatpants. She then spotted a fair lady coming in behind them, she wore a pink croptop and a grey sweatpant with black shoes as well and that made Testy trail off on why a lady would be hanging around with 4 men who looked nothing like siblings of hers but they seemed to relate well as they took pics of this lady with their iPhones, like they adored her....'was she sharing herself among 4 men or was there some reasonable reason for this?' Well Testy could only imagine.
Once she got the sugar, she went straight home only for Eva to greet her with a hug as they went on to having dinner.....moi moi as they used to have most times but this time complimented with soda.
